Dwight Howard on Dunk Contest: ‘I’m Retired for Life’

Howard and his prop-filled aerial show have apparently been grounded for life, as FanHouse reports: “I’m retired for life,’ Orlando center Dwight Howard said. Howard won the event in 2008 in New Orleans with a variety of innovative dunks, including one in which he donned a Superman cape. He finished second in Phoenix in 2009 to Nate Robinson before electing not to compete last season. He won’t be competing Feb. 19 in Los Angeles during All-Star Weekend nor ever again. ‘I don’t want to do it,’ Howard, 25, said after the Magic practiced at the Pepsi Center on Monday in preparation for Tuesday’s game against Denver. ‘I want to let other people have an opportunity to shine. I (have done) the dunk contest too many times. I’m over with it … I do too much running and jumping during the season,’ Howard said of the extra wear and tear of competing in the contest. ‘By the time the dunk contest comes around, my legs are as beat as anything.’”

I’d be way more happy if it was Lil’ Nate that said he is done with it for life.

  • bandwagonpg

sign james white for one weekend only, best investment an owner can make

  • MikeC.

I’d like to see Javale McGee in the contest. Even though he missed that FT line dunk and looked like an idiot, he can get up.

^Give it up for the bad joke!!!

  • spit hot fiyah

if they can start inviting more than 4 players maybe this contest will stop sucking

I agree with Spit Hot Fiyah. Like the good old days when there was about 8 to 10 competitors with at least 2 to 3 dunks. Not 4 including a guy as tall as me trying 35 times for 1 dunk…

LOL at Jtaylor you are probably like that in real life!!!!

Dunk contest is overrated now. The best dunkers almost never dunk and there’s nothing new anymore. Last good dunk contest was VC winning it in 2000.

I’d rather see a better H-O-R-S-E contest than a dunk contest.

When Dwight won it, I thought that was a pretty good year too. Yes his dunks weren’t the best, but the whole arena was rocking so it added nicely to it.

Good News: Nate said he wasn’t going to do it again after the debacle last year. Glad Dwight isnt doing it either.

We need Blake, Russell Westbrook, D-Rose, and someone else

  • JTaylor21

I’d let dwight dunk on me in bed anyday.

  • Lz – Cphfinest3

    Thank God.

  • JTaylor21

Slam, keep up the “good” work of letting morons steal other people’s name and use it to talk sh*t. The fake JTaylor; we don’t believe you, you need more people.

  • JTaylor21

Man I love dwight’s big arms.

Maybe Slam should change the comments section to a log-in feature. This way you would have to sign in to comment. Not sure if it’s been mentioned before but it’d create a community and prevent you know, little “truths” about JTaylor being revealed.

^wish slam did have a log in feature so maybe some of these comment sections would actually be about basketball..
and i hope i never see nate robinson in a dunk contest again

  • Naiym

I think a one on one to 5 or HORSE should replace the Dunk contest…. I KNOW that not every dunk has been done…but unless they up the anty(sp) ( prize wise) and recruit more exciting names..It’s done for. Let it R.I.P….

  • http://google c_cantrell

you can only do so many different dunks until every dunk imaginable will have been done at some point or another lol

  • Will Lee

McGee, Blake, Harangody and DJ Mbenga please

  • D12FSU

I’d like to see DeRozan and Eric Gordon again, but not in the dunk in..the actually contest. mix that w/ blake griffin and then maybe a russel westbrook and we got ourselves a show
