Kevin Garnett, George Karl Discuss Cancer Comments

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

Remember that whole cancer/trash-talk fiasco from a little while back? Of course you do.

George Karl, himself a cancer survivor, was less than impressed with Kevin Garnett when that whole thing took place. Last night, after the Celtics beat Denver, KG sought out the coach in an attempt to clear the air.

Both men came away with renewed respect for one another.

ESPN
and the AP report:

Boston Celtics forward Kevin Garnett, who was criticized last month for trash-talking that was seen as mocking cancer patients, spoke to Nuggets coach and cancer survivor George Karl after Wednesday night’s game to explain the comments. “I went up to him as a man, and what I said is that I had nothing personal toward him nor any other cancer patient that was out there struggling, dealing with life situations,” Garnett said. “I wanted to say that to him, man-to-man.”

The exchange was brief and Celtics coach Doc Rivers joined the duo. “He just came over and we talked, man to man, I appreciated that,” Karl said. “I thought it was a classy gesture.”

There. Happy now?

It’s unlikely, but hopefully, this is the last time this topic will ever be discussed.

It’s good to know that at least Garnett has a little bit of class.

  • Justin C

somewhat happier. I mean he did lie about what he said then say sorry a month later to a different person about it. At least its something.

  • Leoni

    He spoke withe Nene too?

Who cares, KG reminds me of a lab, that acts like a pitt bull in front of company. But when its by itself its punk dog that won’t get up to bark at people when they knock at the door. But once the people get in the house, the lab decides to show it’s agressiveness, because he knows that he really has never been in a dog fight, only barked alot at people who would not bite back. KG for all I care needs to ride off into the sunset knowing that he is the greatest Minnesota Timberwolve in history of the NBA. What a great accomplishment. LOL!!!

  • Love4Humanity

KG is a Hall of Famer. Haters gonna hate

  • LeBron de Con

Gee coach sorry to make fun of your affliction. (hope the cameras caught that)

  • ErnieD

All the that previous stuff should have stayed on the court or in the locker room, and not on Twitter. KG has to play damage control for the rest of his life now. Charlie V. should just concentrate on playing Basketball.

  • ErnieD

Correction: All that previous stuff. And I liked Charlie V. when he was at UConn, but he has under-performed in the NBA. Now he’s getting vastly overpaid to do it, on a team that has no unity, and could take a lesson from teams like Boston right now. It must be tough for some coaches to look down the bench and see guys Tweeting, instead of watching the game, or listening to what the coaches are saying.

    Good job KG.

  • jtam101

That’s like Hitler apologizing for his persecution of the Jews.

    @jtam
    What???

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

@Leoni, no he called him cancerous to the league as well jk jk

  • feez22

@jtam are u serious? jtam is on crack rocks. But ya… Garnett puts this front up during games but we all know who he really is… he picks on the young, the weak and the euros(not saying euros are young and weak so don’t get that in your head). he is essentially a big bully. U know… I used to like his intensity. But now? its sort of coming off as arrogant, trashy, etc. He is playing well right now… but last yr when he did it while playing like crap it was like a dog with all bark and no bite.

    I didn’t mean to call your momma a hoe. That’s class ?

  • CRUS-T jalepino included

Like Da Lench Mob & B-Real said : AIN’T GOT NO CLASS !!!

  • underdog

KG is HoF, no doubt. But Charlie V. should have punch him in the face. But clearly, twitter was the less painfull solution. Big, soft mistake.

Enough of this. I’m angry at myself for even commenting, but to those still pretending to be offended by something that was already taken way out of context: shut the f*ck up and live your own lives.

  • vtrobot

ha ha, thank you JE. now you made me have to comment. funny how many on these boards are more upset than the person who was actually wronged.

  • http://www.nba.com Gman

Some of you guys are nuts. How many guys have u seen in basketball games act mad tough and never fought anyone… ever? A sh1t load. Your suppose to get in the minds of the other baller like any sport. Some people… the way they talk, its like they never played a sport in their life. But on this subject good job KG, even though you didn’t need to.

    Justin C FTW…

  • Jackie Moon

“Shut the f*ck up and live your own lives.”

No. I want live someone else’s life.

  • Michael

it was stupid from KG but Charlie V shoulda manned up and done something if it bothered him that much, dont run to twitter an whined like a little b*tch about it.

  • http://www.twiter.com/dfrance21 dfrance21

Yeah its funny how no one called Charlie V soft for running to twitter, but everyone jumped on KG’s case.

And GMan is right. Name a so-called “tough guy” in the league and tell me the last time he actually fought another player in the middle of a game.

  • Jackie Moon

Name a so-called “tough guy” in the league

    Kenyon Martin

  • Yep

so called tough guy — ron artest. queensbridge. hard as fkkk.

  • riggs

    KG FTW tonight!

  • Craig

    1. Calling CV “soft” for making that comment public is both ignorant and childish.

    2. Garnett “apologizing” to Karl? Big whoop, nothing more brutally fake than celebrity apologies. Damage control ain’t “respect”.

    3. You kids have no idea what “hard” is. Hard is a guy like Tim Duncan, a guy that balls night in night out and pretty much keeps his mouth shut and plays the game. Ray Allen is hard. Guys like Garnett, and every other mouthpiece in the NBA are soft. It’s pretty simple to see. Like 12 years olds in school, the loudest mouths are often the most insecure.

Garnett shows time and time again that he’s an idiot.

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

if kg stands by his view of his comments, what does he have to apologize for? does that mean kg lied initially? no way

  • http://www.iowsports.com/ Blue

In this situation, KG was damned either way…whether he apologized or not. Glad he did, though…

  • CRUS-T jalepino included

he’s still a (unt though you have to admit.

  • CRUS-T jalepino included

    ADMIT IT !!
    >:-(

  • CRUS-T jalepino included

    ADMIT IT . NOW !!!

  • CRUS-T jalepino included

I’M KILLIN’ d rose AT connect 4 right now !

  • ka

    STILL A DOUCHE

  • YokoDMV

@Craig – *co-signing that ray allen is indeed “hard”* he has that same crazy-clinically-focused-clutch style a la Kobe :x

  • BostonBaller

Do we really know what the context was when he spoke to Karl? Do we really know what he said to CV other than what he tweeted? As far as KG being all bark I laugh at that As far as “tough guys” who actually fight in games, I laugh at that because the same people naming them probably called them thugs and classless for fighting. As far as KG’s career being just Minny is a joke and he played ok last year for someone who was injured..He also “barks at top players also but that would hurt some peoples argument of him being a punk.

  • Rondo fan

Ok, you got to admit that at least KG got some class but if he really said that, or even if he didn’t say that at least he went up to the man and apologize.
