Kevin Garnett Injures Leg, Exits Game (Update)

by Tzvi Twersky | @ttwersky

With 2:38 left in the first quarter of tonight’s Boston vs. Detroit game, Ray Allen sliced through the lane before hitting Kevin Garnett with a perfect lead pass. The 34-year-old completed the play with an easy dunk. Somewhere between taking off and actually throwing it down, Garnett suffered a non-contact injury to his surgically repaired right leg.

Minutes later, after grimacing on the bench while trainer Ed Lacerte looked him over, KG limped his way to Boston’s locker room. X-rays on the leg came back negative, but the 6-11 big won’t return to tonight’s game. As of now, according to Woj, he’s scheduled to undergo an MRI Thursday morning.

If the injury turns out to be moderate, this will be much ado about nothing. But if it’s severe, which judging by Garnett’s facial expression on the bench it may be, the Celtics may have just ceded their No. 1 contender status in the Eastern Conference.

Stay tuned tomorrow for further updates.

UPDATE: After the game, the Celtics announced that the injury was to KG’s calf and not his previously injured knee. He will miss a few games, but the outlook is much more optimistic than it was a few hours ago.

Treat people like you want to be treated and Charlie V kept bumping you. You did nothing, then all of a sudden you get hurt on a simple dunk. I can’t stand Garnett and he gets what he deserves, He needs to go back on TV with Bill Russell and cry some more of winning games, then act like on the court he is a Beast only to role players. Get hurt some more soon Garnett.

Did I say he didn’t need to be incarcerated?
I said that the level of.outrage directed at him was out of sync with his crime. One of your contentions was that people were bringig up other crimes in the nfl, drunk driving in particular, like the enforcement or outrage related to those crimes was related to what happened to vick.
You seemed to think that vick’s punishment had nothing to with the punishment other people received.
I am wondering how you could say that in that case but then think that something is wrong with praying for garnett because there are other people who need prayers.
How can vick’s crimes exist in a vacuum but garnett’s prayers be dependent on other people’s problems.

  • fitzy

its pretty sad when people are happy that another living breathing human being got hurt playing a game he poured his life into.

People are pathetic being cheery over someone getting hurt Jesus Christ y’all need to calm down it’s just a f*ckin game damn

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

    Great analogy allen.

  • http://sjfklfsl.com Jukai

It’s a terrible analogy. My point was that Vick’s outrage was perfectly founded for what he did, while the other (three) examples you continuously brought up should have garnered MORE outrage.
If you do not agree with me, then you seem to think that because the crimes you mentioned got little to no attention and punishment, Vick should have gotten off scott free.
Regardless, I still don’t see the connection.
I said people were giving Garnett too much attention.
I said people were treating Vick the way he deserved.
I also said people trying to DEFEND Vick by bringing up other cases made no sense and were not relevant, because those cases do not vindicate Michael Vick or make him any better in my mind. What does that have to do with me thinking that people praying for Garnett’s calf sprain for the sake of the Eastern Conference Finals is way outrageous and near-sacrilegious?
It just seems like you’re trying to bring back the Michael Vick fight. Didn’t you say something to the effect that you’d save a serial killer and let a German Shepperd die or something? I don’t really think we have the same mindsets to even debate this.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

You didn’t say it was sacrilege you said it was stupid because other people are deserving of prayer.
I said the outrage directed at vick was stupid because other people were far more deserving or outrage.
we will never agree on the value of animal life and human life but that doesn’t mean my analogy doesn’t make sense.
And honestly I am not trying to call you dishonest or soemthing. I am just pointing out how feelings.change in different situations.

  • http://all33sports.blogspot.com heat4itALL

think its cuz of those chinese shoes hes wearing?

  • http://sjfklfsl.com Jukai

I’m not religious so don’t take my ‘sacrilege’ comment seriously. Perhaps you’re putting too much stock on my comment about others deserving prayer.
My point was, people who deserve prayer are the people battling cancer, the people in harsh third world regimes, the people who are going hungry and the people who are missing loved ones. There are thousands of people out there deserving prayer.
Praying for KG’s knees for the sake of the NBA Eastern Conference Finals is f*cking ridiculous and DOESN’T DESERVE PRAYER. It’s not about being more deserving, it’s about not deserving at all.
Once again, the Vick thing is totally different. Vick deserved his outrage and others deserved more outrage. Your problem is, you feel Vick didn’t deserve the sh*t he got. “Hey, he killed a couple of dogs, he made a small profit, forgettaboutit, right?” So perhaps it’s hard for you to fathom that Vick got exactly what he deserved, and he’ll never redeem himself in many people’s eyes.
    Those others deserved more outrage.
There’s no sliding scale on outrage, and I guess there’s no sliding scale on prayers either, so maybe there’s some fault in my logic. Praying for KG’s thigh so you have more entertainment come May and August is dumb. Beyond imagination.
So, in essence, I still don’t see how the two situations relate.

  • http://sjfklfsl.com Jukai

Sorry, let me retract the statement that Vick got what he deserved— he got what he deserved in MY MIND. Justice is subjective.

  • http://sjfklfsl.com Jukai

You know, I’ll leave on this note: had you said that MY outrage for should be higher for Stallworth and Roethlisberger and all the others who got off easy, then there would be a comparison.
And my outrage is higher. I don’t know much about Stallworth, but from what I read, I’m absolutely mystified how he got out of it. And I hate R*pethlisberger wayyyyyyyy more than I hate Vick, I think the dude should be locked up AWAY from society.
Saying Vick deserves less outrage because of those who got off is totally different.

Hey Kev!!! WTF???? what’s with those ugly ass lookin’ sneakers you wearin’ …..
    Get better fool.

@ Jukai. You’re in our prayers too man.

You know your fandom has gone too far when you’re scouring the web looking for latest update on a injury to someone that’s not in your family. I need help…

  • vtrobot

there’s no karma, there’s no god. there are lots of haters and b*tches tho. get better, KG.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Get well soon, KG. There’s nothing wrong with saying that. But co-sign Jukai for the most part… Though I’d go as far as saying there should have been MORE outrage at Mike Vick (and others like him… Not JUST him), since for some strange, f’ed up reason people are treating him like a victim.
OKAY I’m not having this discussion. Feel free to reply, folks, but I’m out.

For those who think Vick got what he deserved need to do some research and read some real articles from professional dog handlers who deal with situations Vick put himself in. Alot of those experts states Vick got to much time and most don’t get prison time, just a hefty fine and some years probation. What Vick got was not right and alot of people do this, but it does not make it right. There are alot of people higher than Vick that have been implicated of fighting and killing dogs and got not time in prison or way less time in prison. Vick was made an example of as a black man. Also people don’t know this but, more white people make money off dog fighting than blacks. Vick not goes talk each week to young folks about changing their life no matter what they do that is wrong and will always be under a microscope for some bad decisions. Also people need to realize that Vick grew up in a culture where dog fighting was not a big deal and everyone did it in his community also the cops allowed dog fighting to take place in his area from articles I read really getting into detail how he got started. He was done wrong, that’s why people are still upset about it. People who commit sexual assaults, murder, stealing get less time than what Vick got for killing animals, but VICK is OUT and playing great, so take that HYPOCRITES who do nothing WRONG and live in GLASS HOUSES, but like to throw stones. BOOK IT!!!!!

  • the nerve

i’ll bodyslam vick on the hood of hiz own bentley

  • BostonBaller

Everyone deserves prayer..period. As far as the Vick thing..his crimes were terrible but he got too much time. two sisters got life for their part in an $11.00 robbery and got out after 16yrs b/c the state didn’t want to pay medical bills for one of them. scum never see a courtroom when the have diplomatic immunity even after murdering a person. Justice is subjective but this is hoop. let’s play ball.

  • BostonBaller

Metrobus, does venom taste good when choked upon? I give no excuses for my team losing but there are no excuses for some fans jumping from team to team depending on how they look . Oh..I’m a Cavs fan ..no no now I’m a Heat fan. lol. I stay true to my team regardless..even during the dark days. When some of my fav players were traded I didn’t jump ship I just wished them well and watched them play all the while being loyal to MY C’s. It’s funny how some fans get a renewed hope and BOLDNESS. lol when the team they fear gets dealt a blow. Enjoy it while you can b/c these old farts my pass gas in your city and leave you lost in the midst of funky defeat. hahahaha..have fun.

    Shout out @BostonBaller.

  • Yep

ya’ll are on some crazy ish sayin dudes shouldn’t pray for whatever the heck they wanna pray for. dude is hurt. ppl pray for him to get better. that’s a nice thing to do for him. ya’ll aren’t the ones who decide the level of importance of someone’s prayer. most people wake up and pray they are happy today. is that a wasted prayer? because they aren’t praying for genocides in africa? don’t go starting a moral and philosophical argument while trying to place some arbitrary quantitative value on someone’s prayers, that’s straight ignorant.

Kevin Garnetts calves have got a whole lot of miles on them. I hope the FULL SQUAD are ready to go come play off time.

  • BostonBaller

WZUP Philosopher?! It’s been a while but I’m here and luv’n what I’m reading. How long have you been down with SLAMdome? Hey Yep, very well put and right on point.

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

    Co-sign Yep, also.
I was really going to ask a couple commenters about why people should not pray for what they want to pray for. I mean, some people up here really, REALLY have a “God complex”.
And, they have had this affliction for a long while.
I will not say names, for I am entirely sure that they know who they are.
Since when does it matter what people pray for? Muslims pray 5 times a day, no? Are any of those prayers wasted prayers? What is a wasted prayer, anyway?
Is one man’s/woman’s prayer better and more meaningful than another person’s?

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

    @BostonBaller:
I have been commenting on SLAM for a little over a year now. If counting by seasons, I am in my “second season”. I love this site immensely, as you may know.
I wish that you were up here more often for, you are always classy and courteous to everyone that I have seen you address. And, you, to me, always have an uplifting, intelligent comment.
Happy New Year, my brother, and Happy New Year to all of The SLAM Brethren.

  • BostonBaller

Much respect to you Philosopher and have a Blessed New Year. I’ve only been on here a little over a year if that long but I’ve been down with SLAM since ish #1. Hands down the best mag in the business. The site is tight and regardless of whether I agree with each comment or not there is Freedom of speech. Tough loss to the Hornets but it’s a long season.

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

    Nah, BostonBaller, Tarzan is cool.
He is just frustrated because I have previously exposed his tactlessness AND extreme insensitivity, for he engages in the act of…
dunking on females on the basketball court. smh

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

Then is proud because said female ball player was bigger and better than him.
Perhaps we shall never know her true pedigree.
Anyways, he even taunted AND laughed at her as he triumphantly trotted back on defense. At least that is what he told the world.
I, personally, believe that he EVEN performed some sort of “one man gang” full court press all the way up court (guarding her aggressively) after said flush.
    Damn.
