The Miami Heat’s Reward System

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

Following what many considered a disastrous start to season — a tumultuous time filled with strife, and organizational turmoil — the Miami Heat are now one of the NBA’s hottest teams.

Riding an impressive, and dominant 9-game winning streak — all nine wins have been by double-digits, setting a franchise record — Miami is looking like the juggernaut that people envisioned (and feared) when Pat Riley completed his master stroke this summer.

So, what’s their secret to winning so much lately? Well, some of it has to do with a simple reward system that head coach Erik Spoelstra has put in place for his scoring-happy superstars.

Basically, if they play satisfactory defense, they can whatever it is that they desire on the offensive end.

The Miami Herald
has the details:

If Dwyane Wade grabs a defensive rebound, he has the green light to do whatever he wants offensively. If LeBron James makes a defensive stop, he controls his own game on the other end of the court. These are the parameters set by coach Erik Spoelstra, and the chance for offensive freedom has helped spark the most dominant winning streak in franchise history.

“Our job is to defend and then we get rewarded with what we want to do on offense,” James said.

And to think, that people were suggesting Erik Spoelstra couldn’t manage the massive egos on his roster. He’s got this figured out.

Well, until the next crisis arises anyway.

Tmoney, if amar”e’ were in miami instead of bosh, I think hed be their leading scorer because of how aggressive he is on pick n rolls. Plus, hes a better jump shooter than bosh as well. Great ft shooter too. ….. Its not like bosh is hakeem on defense and amar”’e””’ is chris quinn. Bosh seems content to just pick n pop. O well, we will never know.

Amare would not lead Miami in scoring (he aint chris quinn but he contributed to B. Griffin’s his ROY award based on the game in NY) , Wade will lead Miami in scoring , it’s in his contract ! Mello is probably the only cat who could lead Miami in scoring though but yet again we will never ever , EVER ! know that will we coops. nbk i like your insight.

Tarzan – Bosh shoots 49% from 16-23 ft. vs 40% for STAT. I really don’t know how you can come up with STAT being the best jumpshooter of the two, midrange jumpers are the bread n butter of Bosh’s game! Bosh is also an 80% free throw shooter year in year out. The only glaring difference this year between Amare and Bosh are shot attempts per game. And if you think that Wade and Bron would be okay with STAT taking more shots than them, you’re crazy. (which might very well be the reason they weren’t interested at all in him coming to Miami. I remember STAT saying jokingly that he would expect a call if there were a FA meeting)
