Tiago Splitter Frustrated With Lack of Playing Time

He was a big star internationally; something that has yet to translate into success (or playing time) in the NBA. Gregg Popovich understands the big fella’s frustration, but there’s not much he can do to appease him at the moment. From the Express-News: “Spurs center Tiago Splitter has been a star in his home country of Brazil and a Most Valuable Player in his one-time adopted country of Spain. In San Antonio, he remains an international man of mystery. More than a month into his rookie NBA season, Splitter is so far having trouble cracking coach Gregg Popovich’s crowded frontcourt rotation. ‘It’s just a different role for me,’ Splitter said. “I’m not used to it.’ A strained calf muscle suffered the second day of training camp in September caused Splitter to miss the entire preseason and the first two games of the regular season. It also cost him valuable teaching time … Though Popovich has been pleased with Splitter’s grasp of the Spurs’ system in a macro sense, the coach does not yet trust him with its finer details. ‘There are so many different things I might do during a game, and he’s not going to know exactly what he should be doing,’ Popovich said. ‘That makes it tough for him and for us.’ Popovich acknowledges Splitter is ‘in a position that’s got to be really frustrating. He’s used to playing a lot of minutes and being a big part of what’s going on,’ Popovich said. ‘That’s not happening for him right now, and I’m not in a position to give him 30 minutes to get him going. That’s not fair to him or to the whole group.’”

Yea, I was expecting big things from him. But so far, it seems like Matt Bonner is making more noise. THE RED ROCKET! lol

  • T-Money

Not as good as advertised. I was expecting a Scola-type, with plenty of moves on the block. He’s more of a poor man’s Biedrins.

  • Drew

I’m sure he’ll develop. Spurs don’t draft busts. Pop is just got so many weapons right now he can’t use them all.

  • http://djflkf.com Jukai

He never really had time to learn the American game. He WILL be a Scola type, but even Scola couldn’t just come in and dominate.

  • T-Money

Juks: ehhhhhhhh. Touch is something you’re born with. To put it midly, he ain’t got it. At all. The footwork is decent but the soft release is just not there.

  • Josh

This guys shot is ugly, and I think Scola has a decent 15 foot jumpshot, so we can scratch that. I do believe he will develop, but now is not the time as the Spurs are winning with Duncan and Blair doing most of the heavy lifting.

  • Dubli

    Give him to the suns

  • http://djflkf.com Jukai

T-Money: Eh, yeah maybe. I’ll withdraw my comment and agree with ya because I haven’t really watched enough of Tiago.

This reminds me of Darko Milicic situation all over again. Promising big man stuck in a logjam. I dont doubt that he is a tremendous talent, and with Pop he can only develop, he just needs to stay patient

Tmoney is writing him off already! Based on what? 3 minutes every 5 games? Patience.

Tiago proved it overseas. I wouldn’t say he’s going to be an All-Star but he will be a factor. Props to Pop for sticking with the system. Gotta earn those minutes, rookie.

From what i saw, Bonner give us floor spacing and of course a huge treat from the 3pt line, he fits perfectly offensivly which is not Tiago’s case right now. He needs to stay out of foul trouble on defense and hit the 15ft jumper when it comes to him, when he’ll learn to do that he’ll play.

  • T-Money

Tarzan: I’m not writing him off based on production but raw talent. I don’t mind a rookie not producing but you have to see glimpses of special talent. Tiago doesn’t have that, the skillset is very basic. / LA Huey: Stats and trophies in Euroleague play don’t mean anything in the NBA. Tony Parker didn’t do anything in France. Jasekevicius was basically a god in Greece.

  • Max

T-Money, your dumb. Tiago was out for training camp, and the preseason with an injury. And Is it his fault that Bonner, Mcdyess, and Blair are playing at high level right now? No, it isn’t and it isn’t Pops fault either for not playing him. Why would he when he has a good rhythm going? Over the course of the season Splitter will most likely start to take Mcdyess minutes, so they can start to rest him. Plus T-Money no one has really seen Tiago play, now please just stop making ridiculous comments, and turn off your computer, and go get some sleep.

  • T-Money

Max: well you sure did shut me up. (goes to sleep)

darko played 5 mpg and got drafted that high because he gave everybody a tape where he dunked on nendad krstic who was the other big prospect out of serbia. Splitter was a spanish leauge mvp a finals mvp sweaping barcelona who you know kind of beat the lakers in preseason. Dude got skills and had glimpses of greatness during the wc in turkey last summer. But him not being there to learn the finer details of this system has hurt him. Sending him to the D-leauge makes no sense at all becaus the acb is far better than the D-leauge. The spurs have got a luxury problem right now and they’re under the tax now that’s great management.

haha some ppl that comment on this site are dumbasses lol

  • haslem

According to Joe Dumar’s yet to be published memoir, Darko got drafted because he spun a ball on his finger in front of him during their whole interview without letting it fall once and later made a blind folded trick shot from the foul line with his back facing the hoop.

@T-Money, I’m really putting my faith in the Spurs scouting here but I also feel that successful Euroleague guard play is different from that of bigs as a predictor for NBA success.

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

Tmoney, hee doesnt have special talent? How would you know? Is pop giving you private screenings of tiago? Cuz he sure isnt playing him in games much. Maybe that has more to do with tiago missing training camp, preseason, early season games, blair bonner and mcdyess knowing the system and their place in it. Maybe. Apparently, you know so much more about this guy than anyone else that youre labeling him a nothing. Ill trust pop and rc, and just laugh at you.

All of you guys who are commenting on Tiago’s skill set need to stop talking. None of us know what this kid can do yet, he’s only played a few minutes on occasion. And I’m sure none of us saw his play over seas (if so you wouldn’t be writing him off). The spurs system isn’t something you learn over night especially as a rookie who missed training camp, look at RJ he sucked his 1st season with the spurs now look he’s one of their leading scorers. So just give him time and you’ll see his true outlet.

  • Sarah

You can’t really say the kid can’t play. All you can really say about him at this point is that he has pretty nice lateral movement (something no Spurs bigs have had for a while) and great instincts/knowledge of where to be, both offensively in the pick and roll & defensively (on help side esp). He just needs time to learn the system and gain Pop’s trust, and maybe get a little more sturdy against these NBA bigs.

  • Ronald

I’ve watched all of the Spurs game this season, except for 2 games against the wolves and splitter hasn’t shown anything indicating he can play in the NBA. He’s not strong enough or saavy enough to defend and has a lot of trouble scoring.

  • http://nationofmillions.ca ciolkstar

Splitter’s not as fluid as Scola. Not even close. But I think there’s hope for him developing into Bogut type player. When I watch him I feel like he’s still adjusting to the speed of the NBA game. He’s skilled for his size though, he’s a willing defender and rebounder and he has more brute strength than Scola. But Scola is really really good offensively, like better than Boozer, David West and a lot of other guys more famous than him (Bosh? honestly)…

wao … i guess the fact the media sold out this guy real high in the offseason explain some of the blabla here … like a few others said, PATIENCE .. .this guy has the I.Q. of the game and should perform sooner or later …. but today is ” Everything now ” … not this time … but it will pay off.

  • TheTruth

    Ronald STFU

  • Sarah

I was at the game last night and got to see Tiago get a lot of burn live. I’ll say it again, he knows where to be. On top of that he seemed to always be in the battle on the boards last night. It’s ridiculous to say he’s shown nothing to indicate he can play in the NBA. He just needs a little seasoning.

  • http://slamrumors bella

Tiago just needs a little time until he is well done .the euro games are different then the usa . That does not mean he can’t play the game . PATIENCE AND PERSERVILE
