Deron Williams Growing Increasingly Unhappy

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

Things started out in Utah promisingly enough this season. The team reeled off a bunch of wins (going 13-3 in the month of November), and their floor leader’s play had many ready to crown him as the League’s best point guard.

Lately, however, there’s a lot less promise in Salt Lake City, and Deron Williams sounds like a man who’s ready for change in his professional life.

Head coach Jerry Sloan continues to preach patience with his team, as they struggle with frustrating inconsistency, but DWill ain’t trying to hear any of that. With the end of his current deal coming up, it’s do-or-die time for Williams and the Jazz.

NBA.com and the Salt Lake Tribune have the quotes:

But is Utah as good defensively as it used to be? And does this team have the luxury of working all those new players in? “Not really,” Williams said. “My contract’s up in two years. It’s a now or never situation. I don’t know what I’m going to do after this one.”

Williams said that a much-changed Jazz squad had a “better mesh of guys” in 2009-10, longing for the days when ex-Utah guards Wesley Matthews and Kyle Korver could command attention and respect from opposing defenses, in turn stretching the floor and balancing out the team’s offensive attack. And Williams again pointed out the Jazz’s inability to run Sloan’s offense like it needs to be executed, as everything from Utah’s poor floor spacing and timing to the simple inability to set hard screens has prevented his team from “flowing.”

“We’re trying to run half of a system and then half just freelance,” Williams said. “We can’t do that. We’re not the Phoenix Suns. We’re not the New York Knicks. We’re not just coming out here and playing one-on-one. But that’s what’s happening. Things are breaking down and we’re going one-on-one the last five seconds of a shot clock.”

If things don’t change for the better — and very quickly — Utah could soon have itself a Carmelo-like situation on its hands, something no Jazz fan wants to endure.

The Utah Jazz are currently in sixth place in the Western Conference. They need to right the ship, not just for this season’s sake, but for what is turning into a dicey-looking future for them and the face of the franchise.

One of the best pic and headline combos in a long time.

  • jay rose

Drose doesn’t have an all star squad and he is getting wins for his team. Step it up dwill your the leader

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

How blame should Williams bear, and how much blame falls on O’Connor for failing to recognize Wesley’s importance, and not understanding the defensive limitations of a Millsap, Jefferson frontcourt.

  • add

    how bout austin daye?

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

Allen, D Will has always had good talent on his squad, now this year, he still has good talent, but a little less than usual.
It’s funny how early in the year I read comments about how ‘Deron won’t leave UTA’, he doesn’t care about the bright lights, NYK should go after Paul/Howard.
    How times change.

  • DemiGod

Hes going to Miami 4 some titles.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

Compared to the circus following Carmelo, there won’t be half the media hype surrounding Williams. But he’ll be more impactful to a team.

  • Young C

I think he misses Boozer because they’ve been together and have had some years in (pause).

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Before the season and the Jefferson trade, Williams was openly discussing leaving. I think he’s been disappointed in how long it’s taken Jefferson to get right in the system.
But, the big problem is AK47, in my opinion. Dude has never played well since he got that big deal. Period. He has been overpaid for years, and hasn’t gotten anywhere near the hate some other players have gotten. I think it’s because stat dudes hyped him up so much back in the day, which lead to the contract, and then he bottomed out. I don’t think they want to blast him after telling everybody how great he was because there is still the off chance he’ll be good again.
Anyway, I have no problem with Williams leaving Utah. Hell, I hope he ends up in Atlanta or something.

  • http://www.redraidersports.com Nicolas Fleming

Deron, come back to Dallas. Seriously though, if you can sit back and convince yourself that Lebron did not have good talent in Clevland, how can you even begin to argue that DWill has good talent in Utah?

  • johnny c

how long before we hear about every all star left in the league b*tching about not being on a superteam? i mean come on, these guys all been acting like a bunch of d*mn babies who dont wanna be leaders

  • http://hoopedia.nba.com/index.php?title=Russell_vs._Wilt nbk

CJ Miles is the worst starting 2 guard in the league. Kirelinko is far and away more effective as a 4. I don’t at all like how Al Jefferson fits into that system either. That team IMO is a mess

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

^^ Utah have more talent than last years Cavs. Deron is no Bron.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

nbk!! CJ is better than Bogans & Bellinelli! It’s not even close.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

nbk!! CJ is better than Bogans & Bellinelli! It’s not even close.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

And Raja is their starting SG.

  • MUBWAR

That’s not even an argument Nic. DWill got Jefferson, a solid 20 10 guy. Only problem for the Jazz, they shipped Wesley and Raja Bell stinks as a 2 guard. The Team that won back to back the EC in the regular season was the cleveland James not the cleveland cavaliers.

  • http://hoopedia.nba.com/index.php?title=Russell_vs._Wilt nbk

no he isn’t, not IMO, Bogans is a very good defensive player, don’t be one of those people that thinks just because someone is better on offense he is a better player. And Bellinelli is better then CJ Miles on both sides of the court IMO

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

Is CJ Miles that bad on defense??!! Bogans is too bad offensively to make up for his defense imo.

  • http://hoopedia.nba.com/index.php?title=Russell_vs._Wilt nbk

oh Raja is, that’s my fault

  • http://hoopedia.nba.com/index.php?title=Russell_vs._Wilt nbk

CJ Miles is putrid. But Raja is better, totally spaced on them having Raja

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

Your gonna have to show me some stats to convince me of this one, bk.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

I like the Deron to Dallas suggestion. He can go back home, and have more talent around him.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Nicholas Fleming
    Are you high?
NObody on the Cavs roster compares to Boozer, Jefferson or Millsap. Hell, or Okur.
Without a doubt, Deron has had better talent than LeBron. Not championship talent, but better talent. Easily.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

CJ Miles is not putrid. He’s just maddeningly inconsistent. He can drop 25, or he can drop 2 on any given night. And, he makes boneheaded basketball decisions.

  • http://hoopedia.nba.com/index.php?title=Russell_vs._Wilt nbk

here you go, turn this into a website nbapostup .com/ cj-miles – didn’t want it to go through moderation, but that site will give you a good scouting report on just about everything

  • http://hoopedia.nba.com/index.php?title=Russell_vs._Wilt nbk

C.J. Miles is more of a marginal basketball player but can be effective as an end of the bench player – last line of his scouting report

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

Thanks, never been on there before.

  • http://hoopedia.nba.com/index.php?title=Russell_vs._Wilt nbk

    no problem

  • Slips

Deron sounds pretty ignorant with these comments:

“We’re trying to run half of a system and then half just freelance,” Williams said. “We can’t do that. We’re not the Phoenix Suns. We’re not the New York Knicks. We’re not just coming out here and playing one-on-one. But that’s what’s happening. Things are breaking down and we’re going one-on-one the last five seconds of a shot clock.”

D’antoni’s offense hinges on constant ball movement, not one on one play.

  • http://www.redraidersports.com Nicolas Fleming

Allen, this year is the year I’m talking about. And I’m not saying that Cleveland had great talent last year around LeBron. I’m only saying that if you can say that LeBron didn’t have great talent around him in Cleveland, then you can’t say that Deron has great talent around him in Utah. And Don’t forget that Lebron, at one point, had Boozer, and, last year, a team that was killing people in the regular season. Then the playoffs came around and suddenly everyone noticed that the team on LeBron’s back wasn’t really that good.

  • JTaylor21

Who in the hell wants to leave in a place called Salt Lake anyway?

  • JTaylor21

Big Al jeferson is a 1,000 times better than any player Bron had with him in Cleveland.

  • http://hoopedia.nba.com/index.php?title=Russell_vs._Wilt nbk

He had boozer for one year. AND that team that was killing people is unchanged minus 3 players. And they are far and away one of the two worst teams in the league. Utah would not be anywhere near that bad without Deron Williams (but they wouldn’t be good either)

  • http://www.redraidersports.com Nicolas Fleming

The argument was based off the principle that we take into account LeBron is a better player than Deron. LeBron could make up for inefficiencies in his teammates because he is arguably the best player in the NBA. Deron isn’t even arguable in the top 5. Williams is great, but not top 5. Lebron should be able to carry a lackluster team further than Deron could. Again, the point was Deron Williams is playing with average players with the exception of Al Jefferson.

  • http://hoopedia.nba.com/index.php?title=Russell_vs._Wilt nbk

what you insinuated was that if Cleveland’s talent isn’t good then there is no way Utah’s can be considered good. Meaning you rank them equally if not worse in Utah.

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

    @nbk
Injuries are the main reason the Cavs are bad. Anthony Parker, Gibson, Williams, Jamison, Varejao have all missed a lot of games. Manny Harris, Eyenga, and Samuels are playing heavy minutes and they are all rookies. I saw one game where Byron Scott had to explain what one of the plays was during the game. So lets not give LBJ all the credit for how bad they are. They were hovering above .500 before all the injuries happened.

  • http://www.redraidersports.com Nicolas Fleming

Apologies. What I was more trying to say was I think it’s amusing that people who say LeBron didn’t have enough talent around him expect Deron Williams to carry a team that doesn’t have enough talent around him.

  • http://hoopedia.nba.com/index.php?title=Russell_vs._Wilt nbk

No the Cavs are bad because their horrible. There is no way in the human world you can tell me Mo Williams & Anderson Verajao makes a team good, or even decent. Sorry, I had Cleveland and Toronto fighting for the worst record in the league, the day of the decision. I even bet on it.

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

I’ve seen the games so I know what I am talking about. Mo Williams is a pretty good player and was pretty good in Milwaukee as well and Varejao is a Noah clone in looks and how they both play. I know the loss of LBJ has hurt them alot but injuries have hurt them as well. You can listen to the media all you want about how their bad bc of the loss of LBJ but I know injuries are to blame bc like i said I have watched several of their games and they have alot of guys I’ve never heard of before and who were in college last year.

  • Jerz

D Will is no Bron but still. Only reason this team wouldn’t crumble around him is a hall of fame coach and an equal opportunity offense. he’s a point guard. they’re asking him to do waaay too much. he has to avg about 25 and 10 while shooting above 50% for them to be decent. and that doesn’t even work in the playoffs. raja bell is a has been and he wasn’t even dominant in his prime. CJ Miles sucks. He’s a great athlete but a below average 2 guard. Al Jefferson is an nonathletic ball hog. He’s not productive in a flex. He needs to be able to go one on one. And his passing is too poor for that. Okur isn’t bad but he’s closer to Bargnani than Dirk. I’m just saying. Chris Paul has DWest, Nash had Amare. It’s not just about the talent, it’s about the fit. Jefferson doesn’t fit. doesn’t have the hands or the touch around the basket.

  • http://hoopedia.nba.com/index.php?title=Russell_vs._Wilt nbk

yeah i’ve seen the games too, a lot of them. And been watching the majority of their roster their whole careers. They only have 3 rookies, and Manny Harris is the only one that gets minutes. Mo Williams isn’t a bad player but he isn’t a “best player on a decent team,” hell without LeBron he shouldn’t even be the second best player on a decent team. Antawn Jamison is stats, offensive stats, not a productive, gonna outplay his counterpart type of player. ANd Verajao is almost useless on a team that can’t score or play defense, and he doesn’t rebound anywhere close to as well as Noah. Verajao is one of those guys that is very very important to a good team, but nothing very special on a team that is going to lose anyway. He doesn’t put a bad team over the top in any way but hustle, and hustle doesn’t win you any games when your team is inferior to everyone, at everything.

  • JTaylor21

Y’all wanna hear a joke?No Show Mo Williams is a good player and Sideshow Bob is as good as Noah.

  • http://hoopedia.nba.com/index.php?title=Russell_vs._Wilt nbk

Eyenga and Samuels have played a total of 21 games, combined. Eyenga each of the last 8, and Samuels each of the last 13. Cleveland has lost 19 of their last 21.

  • Keith Bogans

“CJ Miles is the worst starting 2 guard in the league” \
    @Nbk-keith Bogans says hello.

  • HAMMER

As I’ve said b4, this is the same jazz team as of previous recent yrs. Seem 2 always have a good stretch and then they trail off…

  • JTaylor21

Be real cleveland is a d league roster even when healthy and they haven’t been able to beat anyone since lebron stole their soles dec 2

stupid players gettin paid way to much just come to minnesota we will love u here :)

  • TheTruth

@jay rose you can’t compare the jazz and bulls schedule so far jazz hands down harder so far.

  • http://hoopedia.nba.com/index.php?title=Russell_vs._Wilt nbk

@Keith Bogans, as I already said, your far and away a better defender then Miles. And both of you suck on offense, I’ll take your one-sided ness over CJ Miles every day of the week.

  • http://www.twitter.com/JoshElam JE

This is getting absurd. If this trend continues, I’m likely to fall out of love with the NBA. Every team can’t be a championship contender every year. Play through it. Get over it. Damn.

  • http://bulls.com Harry Twatter

BTW CJ is averaging 12,2 an3 3 so if Jazz wanna make a Cj for Bogans trade Bulls should be all game.

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

Its on the owner for not wanting to spend. And its on the owner for aks contract, but thats almost gone. They rreaally should have matched blazers offer for wes. …. Paul and al are exactly defensive stoppers and shot blockers.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Josh

Come to the Lakers!. We need a young super start because we are getting “old”.!

  • tavoris

    um…CJ Miles doesn’t start.

  • tavoris

and DWill has been playing sloppy as hell the past couple of weeks. He looks like he’s given up on his teammates (for now)

  • Ali Saadat

I got an idea, why not just swap every star player from every team to another one. That way they can be unhappy somewhere else and ask for another trade.

  • MikeC.

This seems like a ploy to me. Jazz play poorly for a stretch that highlights their weaknesses, Deron pops off to the media, Jazz management work to solidify weaknesses, team wins some more and Deron is happy.

  • jumpman

deron williams needs to team up with melo

  • greg

its a good thing cp3 and dwil cant join forces on the same team, id like 2 see one of those guys get dwight and team up trade gilberts contract for an expiring then sign your pick of all star pgs

  • Purple & Gold

The main problem is Utah’s ownership. First off Al Jefferson has not and will never again be a 20 & 10 player that he barely was before that bad injury. Boozer they really had no shot at re signing him last summer. Dude was tired of being in the West and getting bounced out of the playoffs each year by the Lakers. Wes Matthews & Kyle Korver were cap casualties where the Jazz because they are in small market don’t and will not spend over the salary cap and pay a dollar for dollar tax penalty. The NBA is turning into how MLB is now. Where if you aren’t in the big markets like LA, NYC, Chi town then you don’t have a legit shot at winning a championship.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

SLC- Where taking Sundays off happens.

  • ryan

I like the Jazz and hope they right their ship. I wonder if they could get something going with Detroit for Richard Hamilton? He can bring the offense and move his feet well on defense plus he’ll fit in a system. Wonder how the cap situation matches up.

  • greg

^^^^ thats actually a pretty good idea if the jazz werent so cheap with their contracts… see ronnie brewer, kyle korver wes mathews, boozer, not even to mention to countless trades they could have made

  • dwreck

Williams Matthews Batum LaMarcus Oden for half a season and then someone else would be legit

  • Justin

I really wish these b*tches would stop complaining when they aren’t contending after their first 4 or 5 years in the league

  • http://nationofmillions.ca ciolkstar

Deron is b**ching too much. If you don’t like losing, step your game up.

  • Shem

I wonder if Al Jeff still thinks he’s driving a Bentley

  • http://google c_cantrell

would it be a reach to think that maybe deron and howard could both be lakers in just a few short years?

  • Orlando Woolridge

SLC Punk. Anyone else see that movie? Hilariously bad.

  • http://www.twitter.com/mark_itis mark

i think they need a more solid 2 guard… rip hamilton would be a nice fit! @mark_itis

  • BS

hands down best pure guard in the league can do everything, i think derrick rose is just having one of those ridiculous seasons. But i don’t blame him, chris paul beat him out of the starting pg out west that is some bs. Anyone with any knowledge on basketball knows this guy just needs some guys to step up and we know who that is Mr. Al Jefferson
