Derrick Favors Gets First Start

by Ben Osborne / @bosborne17

The library-quiet rookie season that New Jersey Net rookie Derrick Favors is having continued tonight, as he got a somewhat-buzzed-about nod to make his first career start but then saw his impact limited by foul trouble and just 9 minutes of playing time.

Favors getting the start was the first thing Avery Johnson discussed in his pre-game press conference, and the start was noted in pre-game introductions by Nets’ PR/PA man Gary Sussman (and cheered loudly by the crowd at The Rock). Favors, an athletic 6-10 PF who the Nets selected third in the Draft (over DeMarcus Cousins, which yours truly disagreed with), promptly scored the second basket of the game on a, but then picked up two quick fouls and headed for the bench.

While Favors final stats for the game of 7 points, 5 rebounds and 4 fouls were pretty much in line with the relatively pedestrian numbers he’s put up all year, no one is ready to call a kid who is just 19 (and the youngest player in the League) a bust.

Afterwards, the soft-spoken Favors said that while he was “nervous at first,” he “got more comfortable and will be more comfortable next time.”

“(Starting for the first time) was an honor,” Favors added. “Coach put his trust in me, and I think I did a good job.”

Favors two most demonstrative buckets were finishes off of fast breaks where he beat the Bulls down the floor. “Coach told me run, I’m going to run,” he said with a smile.

And yes, the struggling Nets beat the first-place Bulls, 96-94. So in one regard, the night was a huge success for young Derrick.

Damn losing to the nets is not a good look for a team with title aspirations like the bulls do.

I SOOOO wish NJ woulda drafted Demarcus Cousins…just befuddling to me how they let him slide….

lmao @ me picking the Nets to gain at least the 8th spot in the East….not over yet though. When you consider overall talent, they are a pretty deep team…some injuries here and there and seems like things are all out of order, but on their nights they’ve got enough talent to compete

Man, I don’t know what the hell it is about the damn Nets that cause the Bulls problems.
We dropped two games to them last year too. Yeah.
The Bulls can’t be considered one of the elite losing games like these. We nearly came back and won it, but it should’ve been an easy win.
    Shake my head…

Its still insane to me why they didnt draft Cousins. Brook is getting less rebounds than PGs some nights (which I know no one predicted). Just goes to show when you nitpick in your rebuilding stage instead of picking the best player left, it can bite you in the ass. The Thunder could have Reke and Philly or NJ could have swooped cousins. Really Philly? A beast 260 6’10 rebounding and offensive weapon or a really talented 3. What’s more rare?

Cousins talent has never been questioned. He wasn’t picked by the Nets because he was an out of shape college player, who somehow managed to get even more out of shape for the combine. Talented but lazy.

    Hahahaaaa @ riggs. Fantastic line.
Also DF played 9 minutes and had 4 fouls. Jitters much?

Cousins has serious attitude and conditioning issues. Nets have repeatedly failed miserably in trying to develop those sorts of guys (see Marcus Williams, Sean Williams, Terrence Williams). Favors was the no-brainer pick.
