LeBron James Believes he Won’t be MVP

Derrick Rose, however, thinks he could bring the MVP trophy back to Chicago.

by Adam Figman | @afigman

As we approach the halfway point in the ’10-11 season, this much is obvious: There’s no clear-cut MVP just yet. And, from the looks of it, we won’t be having a repeat winner, either. As LeBron himself recently admitted, when he joined his buddies his Miami, the probability that he’d win the coveted award in 2011 all but disintegrated.

From CBS Sports:

James has already paid a huge public relations toll since “The Decision,” but he noted on Saturday that he understands that he compromised his ability to take home hardware as well.

The Sun-Sentinel reports that James acknowledged that both he and teammate Dwyane Wade will not win the NBA MVP award this season. “When we decided to come together, our MVP chances went out the window,” James told reporters.”

For what it’s worth, he’s right, and—regardless of whether or not you feel he does or potentially could deserve it—the idea of a player with two elite teammates being voted MVP is pretty unrealistic. If nothing else, it’s good to see LBJ actually understands how the process works, given his recent PR missteps.

In similar news, it looks like LeBron isn’t the only one who’s felt the need to look around and ponder the award recently. You might remember the coverline of SLAM 143 stating simply, “Derrick Rose wants to be MVP.” Well, three months later, it looks like Derrick Rose still wants to be MVP.

Via ESPN Chicago:

“As long as we keep winning, I know I’m up there with the people that’s in the race for it. I want to be it, so why not?”

Rose racked 19 points, 9 assists and 4 rebounds in the win and was showered with chants of “MVP, MVP” late in the game.

“I love it,” he said of the chants. “Like I say, there’s no point in playing this game if you’re not trying to be the best. And this year I want to be MVP.”

As far as his teammates are concerned, Rose is as good as anyone in the league.

“I don’t see why he couldn’t [be MVP],” Bulls forward Carlos Boozer said. “He carries our team every night. He makes plays, he scores the ball, rebounds the ball. I think he might be the only guy in the league averaging over 24 [points] and eight assists or whatever. He’s special.”

And this week we learned the SLAM readers agree.

lets be real……cp3 not winning the mvp…for 1 his team wont win enough games…and for 2 its not like he putting up huge numbers! the hornets gonna be like a 5 or 6th seed and most likely get bounced 1st round

Yeah, just kiddin man. I see what you mean, its odd that you can win the MVP without being the best player at your position.

And I just can’t stand the PER. All those nerdy basketball stats are lost on me. Just give me the good old fashioned ppg, rpg, apg, etc. stat line.

Did you think the results of the head to head battles between Paul and Swill were.important before this year?
Typically Paul fans.discount the head to head battles because Swill.has usually won them so it is interesting.to see a Paul fan tout the result.

Tariq: Chris Paul’s Hornets and Kobe’s Lakers were a game apart. The talent on the Hornet’s squad and the talent on the Laker’s squad were leagues different, Kobe was playing with a helluva better team. I’m certainly not saying Kobe didn’t deserve it in 08… I just think Paul deserved it a little more. Had Kobe won rightfully in 2006, I don’t think he’d have won in 2008.

Not much time left for anyone to be MVP once Kevin Durant hits his peak.

Kobe should be a 4 time MVP by now, its a joke award after Steve Nash won two. History books will down on this in NBA History. Some one down the line in history, fifty years from now will call this the lost years of the NBA when they see Steve Nash has two MVP’s, by Kobe, AI, Shaq, KG and plenty others have one.

The Seed: Allen Iverson…? Good lord…

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Jukai, Stop acting like AI never played good, I can’t remember the season, but AI should have gotten another one. AI used to take a team full of scrubs far in the playoffs some years. Talking about not having any help around him.

  • http://sjfklfsl.com Jukai

The Seed: Cause he forced out all the help cause he couldn’t co-exist, and no one around him got better because he made them feel like they didn’t have to practice. MVP to me!

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Jukai, you are right about one point, he did force out Stackhouse, Hughes and more, but he was a one man wrecking crew that deserved more praise during some of his highlight seasons. No one got better because the 76ers choose to put role players around him and let AI be AI, which was a great career for a while. Steve Nash MVP to ME!

The Seed: Iverson wasn’t the most VALUABLE player because of his issues. He was, certainly at one point, the most SKILLED player, one who could carry a team by himself, take crap players to the playoffs and going 5-on-1 like it’s nothing. Valuable is a bit different.

    Kevin Durant anyone?

If your talking W/L then no, I don’t see it as that important. UTA have always had a superior Roster to NOH since they have entered the L. I mean, its not even close. Allenp.

Allen Iverson’s teams made HIM better. He did not make THEM better.
    This is true.

This is a year where all the top teams are really winning through full team effort; Boston, San Antonio stand out in that regard. If your looking for dominant performances then coming into this year it would have been hard to pass up on BOTH Dwade and LeBron. Once they got that starting gate mess figured out they have been leading their team to ALOT of wins… 16 of their last 17 or so… Kobe has been in the mix all year but you would rather have your bad games at the start of the season rather than towards the end, and thats whats happening for Kobe. The team has stopped winning….
Orlando – DWIGHT, New Orleans – CP3, Utah – DERON WILLIAMS, Chicago – DROSE; have all been steller from the get go, but for me. Dirk has been a clear stand out from the gate and has pushed his team to the top of the NBA for the regular season. MVP.

One guy that has kept popping up on the radar has been none other than Paul Pierce, certainly not one of the first guys you would speak of. But the question to be asked is… WHY NOT? That can be a little harder to just write of entirely.

Didn’t MJ, Magic, and Shaq win it while playing on some pretty good teams. I don’t think it’s out the window for Lebron. If he plays MVP style, then it will backfire if people just don’t vote for him cause of their personal love for Cleveland

LEBRON, AND DWADE CAN DEFINITELY SPLIT IT
