Otis Smith on the Celtics: ‘They Act Tough’

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

The Orlando Magic and Boston Celtics have a long, and rich history of trash talk. Whether it be on the court, or even more entertainingly, off of it.

Following the Celtics’ thrilling win over Orlando on Monday night, Glen “Big Baby” Davis and Kevin Garnett both dismissed Dwight Howard‘s dominant 33 point, 13 rebound performance (Davis claimed Howard was “easy” to defend.)

Over on the Orlando end, GM Otis Smith questioned the Celtics’ toughness, or lack thereof. From the Sentinel (via, Celtics Blog):

Sentinel: Is the team tougher now?
Smith: ‘Tough is relative. Tough to who? Is anybody tough?’
Sentinel: One could argue the Celtics are tough.
Smith: “They act tough. They’re not really tough. They act tough … To say that we’re going to go ‘Aarrgghh!? No one does that in this league. At the end of the day, they’re all young men. They’re going to go out and play. One team is going to execute better than the other. That’s what it comes down to. It doesn’t come down to that kind of toughness.”

Now, whether or not the Celtics’ bite is as bad as their bark remains up for debate.

All I know is that I can’t wait for these two teams to continue their trash talk (and basketball) during the Playoffs. We’ll be able to more easily determine which side is tougher then.

  • http://slamonline.com THE REAL RIGGS

    U Mad?

  • dubb100

the celtics suck….. nahhh you mad…. get a new phrase robot

  • bails1

Tough talk coming from the Orlando Magic. Known as one of the scariest teams ever. Defensive juggernauts like Ryan Anderson and Hedo “Hold Me Back” Turkoglu.

  • el_larsen

    agree with rondorajon9
    otis smith talks too much

  • letsmotor

they sure looked tough when they embarrassed the magic in the playoffs last year.

  • http://slamonline.com THE REAL RIGGS

@dubb100: a record of 31-9 with the team not even at full strength says otherwise, idiot.

  • http://google c_cantrell

otis smith talks too much.. and howard might be easy guard alot of the time but obviously not in this game.. dude had 33 points.. if he is easy to guard how the hell did he get 33 freakin points?

  • T-Money

I mostly agree. The Celtics win games because they’re talented and tough in a physical sense (they put a body on you). I don’t think the growls, the yelling and the yapping affect anybody. If anything, KG does that to get HIM going.

  • el_larsen

“Spin lob,’’ he said. “Or jump hook.’
he ‘s good for sure but predictable.but as long as he hits no pb!!but c’s will always find a way to kick his ass out of the playoffs

  • vtrobot

magic do a good job of acting like whiners. whiniest team in the L, by far. p.s. C’s will be tougher when perk comes back (and it will be easier to guard dwight then).

  • Blaspemy

Everyone in the NBA acts tough. Its all a act. Except for Vince Carter, I think he IS THAT indifferent to everything.

  • robb

@T-Money agreed. I don’t like the Celtics but they are a good team, they really know how to play the game.

  • Mr McOvaChicken to you

    Bring on the playoffs !!!

  • snasty10

celts arent tough at all, they are all getting pretty old and frail except for rondo, who still doesnt have a legitmate jumper, they scare me about as much as the movie “The Happening”

  • http://yahoo.com The Ambassador

I hate Big Baby Davis he f*cking annoying. If he was easy to defend how the hell did he get 33 points? F*ck Pierce to what happen to WERE NOT GOING BACK TO LA noone wonder you got stabbed! Every team should play dirty with the Celtics give them something thats real to complain about.

  • EJ

Celtics are like the skinny kid in the gang, big mouth, but a small fist. They can play, but everybody knows they are pussies. KG does what he does just to get his tough alter ego going, but when other players react to it, he runs.

  • snasty10

    agreed ^

  • tonyknorr

@ anyone who says the C’s aren’t tough. you must not play a lot of competitive basketball because anyone who has ever played in a competitive game of high level basketball whether it is pick up, college or whatever knows that toughness is all about the tenacity, and pride that a player or team plays with during the game, especially on the defensive end. and no team in the L plays with more pride and intensity on the defensive end then the c’s which means you bet your ass they are tough. you better believe that if you tried to body up and play tough with Ray Allen or Paul Pierce or rajon rondo in a pick up game they would not hesitate to put a rose on your nose and call you Feefy after embarrassing you with few buckets in a row right in your face.

  • bashmo

not sure why the Celtics bigs feel like they can contain Howard. In all serious to say that someone is easy to guard after they put up 33 on your ass is retarded. And “predictable offense” or not, Dwight put 22 a game against the Celtics in the conference finals. Orlando lost that series because of the bad play from lewis and carter. And for the record, Doc Rivers should be credited for the win. Every time the C’s play orlando they let him go single coverage, and try to defend the other magic players.

  • snasty10

@tonykorr, ive played bball my whole life and i still think the celtic’s are a bunch of big mouth’s who just put up a front, and are one of injury away from being scrubs

  • Jelte

Glen who? Big Baby should be thankful for being allowed to be on the court with someone like Dwight Howard.

  • ClydeSays

Otis should ask his team why they’re giving up 60% in FG%. That’s some tough D there…

  • Ansonpanson

did no one notice he called the celts “young men”?

  • 1982

The Celtics are tough enough to beat his team. Isn’t that tough enough? And just because Otis is too old to play doesn’t mean everyone else is young.

  • 1982

@Snasty10 Not for nothing, but any team is one injury away from being scrubs. Just depends on who’s injured…

  • flipnoyce

Who has the best record in the East again? Is it Orlando,NOTTTTTTT!!!! Who ever is saying the Celtics is not tough enough is about the same size as Dwight Howard, big body and has a peanut for a brain!!! Leading the league in Whining, like a chubby kid who can’t have his sweets along with SVG. That whole Orlando organization is a bunch of whiners. The Celtics talk the talk and walk the walk most of the time. I wonder what would happen to Orlando if Dwight really follow Shaq’s footsteps and head for a bigger city.HMMMMMMM!!!

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

Did he just call the Celtics “young men?”

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

    *oops. didn’t see Ansonpanson’s post…

  • flipnoyce

Can someone in here rate who has the toughest team in the NBA, I’d like to know what is the definition of toughness from some of the writers in here. And to what extant make this team tough. IS Dwight really as tough as he look or he’s just frontin’ because of his body size?

  • Adrian Bond

The Eastern Conference is shaping up to be very interesting come Playoff Time, and I think the Celtics will find itself in the mix somehow once everyone is healthy. Im glad the Memphis Grizzlies are in the West Conference. We always struggle with the Eastern teams!

    Adrian Bond Memphis Grizzlies Fan

  • jufu

celtics are old, but they’re like that grizzled vet that can still kick your a$$ to kingdom-come. smartest team in the league, by far.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nick Tha Quick

Evidence of toughness: Your team leader fakes a career-ending life-threatening injury aka “small bump” to his knee and has to leave in a wheel-chair. Returns after the bench goes on a run to tie the game, makes a couple shots and then declares himself the best player in the world. Also known to be the inventor of touch-me-and-i’ll-throw-my-head-back-like-i-got-clotheslined.

  • thebigticket

Both teams are wrong glen was way outa line saying that howard was easy defend droppin 33 on him and when your only able to be in a game because a nobody named ryan anderson got on a lucky three streak you have no provalages to talk crap about a team that just beat you

  • http://www.slamonline.com/online/category/blogs/farmer-jones/ Ryan Jones

Otis Smith talks a lot of sh*t for a guy whose team hasn’t won sh*t.

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

Glen davis is a chump. …….. And I wish a reporter would be foolish enough to ask pop whos tough, etc.

  • QuinnThaEskimo

@Nick tha quick..Are you talking about Paul Pierce? F**k off mate..is there a better IQ in the last quarter in the East..including LBJ. Pierce still gets it done, on time and whenever the C`s need it.That`s tough. LBJ needs to learn how to do it like PP.See him @ the Atlanta game yesterday where he just jacks a three when they were tied in the fourth ,last possesion-when any score woulda done. And LBJ missed , and they lost in OT. See, PP would have done his thang and @ least gotta free throws or an and one..And with Perk back soon they are tough.. If there not tough..who`s tougher?

  • letsmotor

I really don’t understand all this talk about fronting and gangs and fighting. this is basketball, not a gang war. people trash talk to get under other players’ skin and/or pump themselves up mentally, not because they actually want to start a fight. when it comes to toughness, mental toughness is what matters most. you know how the magic went down 0-2 to the celtics in the ECF, and then came out in a MUST WIN game 3 and had their asses handed to them? that is the exact opposite of mental toughness, and a lot of times that’s what keeps a talented team like the magic from getting over the hump. talk all you want about garnett “fronting” or being like the skinny guy in a gang, the bottom line is that the celtics are a mentally tough, deep, hungry team that has loads of chemistry. if you can’t respect them you either don’t know basketball or you just don’t wanna see the truth.

  • Pharoah

Celtics vs Magic should be the ECF. Would be entertaining as hell and Magic are more than capable of knocking this team off

  • el_larsen

@Nick tha quick.what you say about pierce sounds like pure genius to me!!against the lakers !in the finals!!look at how you re disgusted!thanks paul ,it worked, you re my truth

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

Are the Celtics tough? No doubt. Are the Celtics as tough as they think they are? Not a chance.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I like Otis Smith. I don’t like the contract he gave Shard, but I like most of his other moves, and how he carries himself with the media. I can’t undertand how he can have such a whiny coach.

  • http://www.sonicbids.com doyouwantmore

The only reason to growl and act scary is because you’re scared and you can’t run.

  • http://twitter.com/HarryByrdMan44 LA Huey

God I hope the seeding works out to where these two teams meet in the 2nd round again. Also, I hope it works out for the Bulls and Heat to clash in the 2nd round and, in the meantime, they develope some animosity towards each other. I love the Eastern Conference.

  • http://yahoo.com The Ambassador

I cant wait until the Celtics go another 22 years without winning a champoinship.

  • http://www.twiter.com/dfrance21 dfrance21

You guys are funny. Are we talking about basketball or MMA fighting? Who cares if KG runs when he’s confronted(he doesn’t), who cares if PP embellishes an injury to grab a rest? Whatever the Celts do, when they’re healthy, they’ve been the best team in the East the last 3-4 years. So while all you e-thugs sit at your cubicle calling the Celtics bluff, they’re just racking up the wins and not thinking about you.

Seriously, think of a player that you think is “tough” How many fist fights have they been involved in on the court?

  • ripslam

Easy to get grumpy when your squad loses a big game, eh Otis?

  • Cameron

Hey Otis…..you lost to the C’s…get over it

  • letsmotor

thank you, dfrance. glad someone gets it.

  • Justin

Caboose nailed it on the head. They (except Paul Pierce) are tough guys but not nearly as tough as they think. If anything, I would say they are a mentally tough team. It takes more mental toughness than physical to play hard defense like they do. And NickTheQuick nailed it 100% with that description of Paul Pierce. Of course he came back and hit a couple of shots afterwards. He wasn’t really hurt. Biggest p*ssy in the league this side of Vince Carter

  • whyeo

this coming from a GM who let Hedo walked out only to welcome him back again, maybe Otis should concentrate on his job more instead of what others say.

  • vtrobot

They people sh*tting on the Celtics sounds like bigger whiners and bigger jokes than the Magic. Dude got stabbed 11 times and then a month later started the season and didn’t miss a f*cking game that year. That’s your definition of a p*ssy? What do you do, play an 82 game season after getting shot? You sound like a f*cking idiot when you compare PP to Vince. Do you realize that? Do you know why the C’s act tough? Because they beat your f*cking team on a very regular basis and they have the right to. To answer the other question, I’d say that Marc Gasol and Z-bo seem like another one of the tougher frontcourts. They have Tony too and you know he doesn’t let a debt slide.

  • TrueFan

Wow, so the GM of a team named after a fuggin’ Disney Theme Park thinks he has the lane to dictate who is or isn’t “tough” in the NBA? After getting beat?

    Really?

Man I didn’t know it was rough like that out in the mean streets of Orlando…

I’d be mad too if I just got beat by the team that routinely eliminates me from the Playoffs…I don’t think I’d call the guy that just knocked my teeth out “fake tough” though.

Otis you’re a big, big man aren’t you?

    LMAO
