Polladaday: All-Star Voting?

The way it is now, the fans vote for the All-Star starters, and the head coaches fill out their respective lineups. Many think the public does a poor job of selecting starters, and that a change is needed. What do you think?

Should the All-Star voting process be changed?

How about fans voting counts for only a third of a full vote, sportswriters can vote and have that count for a third and coaches the other third? Then for reserves, leave as is, with coaches deciding that.
You don’t want to completely take away the fan voting experience (well, maybe you do) but fans shouldn’t have as much power as to completely decide the staters.

F*ck the fans, those morons don’t have a clue to who the hell they be picking. How the hell can Yao Ming be a starter for the past two years when he hasn’t played a lick? Also how can the second best PG in the L for the past 3 yrs only make the game once? Let the coaches and players pick it.

Cosign enigmatic… you have it organised well with the split components between fans, sportswriters and coaches. i would also maybe include a panel of selected former players and split it 25% each

Case in point of fan idiocy: 2010 All Star Game. Allen Iverson was a starter! He didn’t show up to the game but was voted a starter. Also Tracy McGrady almost made the team. I think he had logged 5 total minutes on the court for the entire season by the time the All Star break rolled around. I’m glad that I didn’t have to watch them play, I would have asked for a refund of my ticket. Yao will likely get voted in this year and he’s out for the season.

I like the 1/3 voting system proposed by Enigmatic. Makes sense. But because it makes sense it will never happen. Stern hates logic.

the problem with the fans voting is that the chinese market is so BIG.. I mean what are they, like 1.3 billion people? so yeah, it’s no surprise the chinese players and their teammates (t-mac) gets to much love…

All the cats that say the fans are stupid are… owners under pseudonyms? Save the “Best Players” thing for the All NBA team. Vote with the rest of the idiots and watch 2 teams full of big personalities have a friendly exhibition match. Can we let the fans vote for the dunk contest & 3pt shoot out too?

Fans have been screwing up the All-Star vote for years. The first time I really noticed was when Zo and Grant Hill were voted as starters for the Eastern team while Zo was missing the season recovering from transplant surgery and Grant Hill was missing the season recovering from his 87th ankle surgery. Fan vote screwups are an annual tradition.

THe people that vote don’t even watch the games. Children in Arenas whose parents need something for them to do (hence Allen Iverson starting in the game last year), posers fans killing time on Facebook and NBA.Com (same) and CHina.

I think they should make it similar to the MVP voting where the fans’ vote is just a portion of the whole vote

Also most of the people that are voting are fans of the participating NBA teams and are very biased towards those teams

Coaches also suck at voting though, Mo Williams anyone?

leave it as is.. i get that some players get snubbed.. but the all-star game is all about the fans.. either super duper basketball heads.. or just the average sports fan.. it’s for entertainment.. not for home court advantage..

how bout when a player gets injuried remove them from the ballot {DUH!} thats why yao got so many votes this year last year it was T Mac and the previous year it was Gil

I think it’s fine the way it is unless there would be more options than these. There are smart voters, but then there are dumb fans voting which doesn’t make any sense.

also, can we change the ballot? the western centers may be the weakest group i have ever seen as the 2 best C’S in the west (duncan and p. gasol) are in the forward group. they should change it to fans voting for 2 bigs, 2 wings and a pg.

  • LA Huey

I would like to see them change the ballot for the starting 5 (like others have mentioned) to 2 bigs, 2 wings, and a point.

Why not let the fans decide but split the voting up into regions so you have each country which have a reasonable amount of voting each year, except from the usa, which would be split into like,5 or 6 regions or something and countries which dont have enough votes to count significantl in the old system will be put into the other category, that way, say if china wanted yao as a starter, they would vote for him, as the wests centre, and at the end of the voting chinas starting 5 would be unveiled and each player would get a point for each region they get, and the players with the most points at the end for each position will start. Or you could introduce a fans percentage of the vote like others have suggested, but I’d have or sportswriters, fans, and coaches voting, and then keeping the reserve system which is voted for by coaches. Also swtich it to to 2 bigs,2 wings and a point, cos right now i’ve got Nene down as the west starting centre
