Tony Allen, O.J. Mayo Fought on the Team Plane

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

The Memphis Grizzlies had just walked out of the Staples Center following a dominant victory of the stumbling Lakers, and the mood on the team plane was joyous. Well, it was joyous for most of the players.

O.J. Mayo and Tony Allen were involved in a heated card game at 30,000 feet, and at some point (after Allen had heard enough of Mayo’s insults), fists were thrown.

Mayo reportedly was the loser in the scrap, which led to him sitting out last night’s game with what the Grizz called “bronchitis”.

The Commercial Appeal
has the details:

Tony Allen and O.J. Mayo were involved in a physical altercation Monday afternoon over a gambling debt during the Grizzlies’ flight home from Los Angeles. Team officials insisted that Mayo’s absence Tuesday night for the Grizzlies’ 110-105 victory over the Oklahoma Thunder was due to bronchitis and not the fight. But the incident was described as a one-sided scrap in which Allen clearly got the best of Mayo.

Neither player was disciplined after meeting with coach Lionel Hollins once the team arrived in Memphis. According to a source, Mayo and Allen were involved in a card game that left Mayo owing Allen between $1,000 and $1,500. Mayo refused to pay and repeatedly insulted Allen.Allen then went to the restroom and returned to Mayo, who was acting more belligerent about losing. Allen then struck Mayo and the two had to be separated by teammates.

Allen and Mayo have reportedly put the incident behind them (Tony apologized to management and his teammates, and then went out and scored 19 points in a big win last night.)

HBO needs to create a show based entirely on high-stakes card games between NBA players on various team planes. You can’t tell me that wouldn’t be endlessly fascinating to watch.

  • http://slamonline.com Ryan Jones

It’s been a bad few weeks to be a Mayo or a Van Exel.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

The Cardgame – tv show could be called “Flakes On A Plane”.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

VAN EXEL??? what happened to my boy Nick Tha Quick!!?!?

  • nicko

Gilbert Arenas was reportedly the pilot of the plane.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

HEY RYAN JONES!!!! What do you think of some of your writers here banding together to make that magazine: ‘BUCKETS’???

  • rob stewart

I thought Stern declared it illegal to gamble on planes after the Gilbert thing?

  • riggs

O.J. looks like one of them dudes that only bark. Hopefully tony allen knocked some sense into his a*s and took him down a few pegs.

  • riggs

and its entirely plausible that coach hollins think that mayo deserved to get slapped too since no repercussions happened to tony.

  • T-Money

Tony Allen is someone I would pay. He’s got that crazy don’t give a eff look in his eyes. Refusing to pay $1,000 is just straight disrespectful for these guys.

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

I like OJ, but Chicago cats got serious knuckle game. He picked the wrong dude to taunt and fight in Tony Allen.

  • Brian

I wouldn’t mess with Tony Allen in a million years.

  • fruizm

Dacre…..I think Van Exel’s son admitted he is guilty of murder. I think.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

    snap!

  • Chazz Michael Michaels

i wouldn’t mess tony allen but i wouldn’t definately like to f*** with that shaq guy… he seems a lil soft to me…..

  • http://www.twitter.com/AllBall247 AllBall247

Since Tony entered the L its been known that he is tough. Don’t know what Mayo was thinking.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Dammit…Bryan beat me to it. Lol was gonna say the same thing.
Mayo, you from West Virginia homie. Don’t mess with a dude from the Chi.

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

If they was really getting down I’d be scared as ***** to be on that jet lmao

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

Wow really? 1) owes money, 2) talks smack, 3) gets smacked. Sounds pretty deserved.

  • greg

tony allen prolly rocked his jaw thats y he didnt play cuz his teeth went down his throat and they scraped him on the way down

  • ErnieD

Give Tony some confidence, and you just don’t know what he’s capable of. Wrong kind this time around.

  • http://www.fiba.com Darksaber

OJ must not know about Tony Allen’s strength. Dude gives Kobe fits in limited mins, and as much as i dislike Mambiatch, he’s deceptively strong.
Gotta love Tony going to the rest room, washing them hands then smacking Mayo around.

  • Stepfan

“bronchitis…?” Really? Come on Mayo 1,000 dollars is like a dollar to you. Stop being cheap and pay the man.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    I would watch that show.

  • Stillballin

I wonder if on paid Tony..

  • add

yo id love to see an hbo series for the nba but stern would flip

  • Stillballin

OJ had to get his a** whoop first, before he pays Tony..

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

My philosophy is that if things proceed to a fight, you are exempt from paying the debt.
I mean, if you win the fight, of course you’re not going to pay. The cat you just beat has not means to recoup after proving himself your inferior when it comes to hands.
If you lose the fight, the only reason you pay is out of fear for another butt-whipping. In my mind, that’s like taking two Ls, and I would have to refuse to pay on principle.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

I remember that, Dee.. Remember when Jerry Stackhouse hit teammate Christian Laettner also over a card game on the team plain..

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

I love the picture of O.J. on the frontpage of Slam.com, it just compliments the headline perfectly.

  • Cizzo

Okay the Juice got squeezed but whatabout the Grizzlies? Knocking off The Lakers the OK City. That’s worth of some press. Not some Grown man beating down a kid. I sbeat up kids like OJ regulary.. so what!

  • JTaylor21

Mayo got hit once and they were seperated. Does that mean that he got his a** kicked and that Allen’s somekind of goon. Come on people, stop hyping up a petty scuffle.

  • D-Block

OJ Mayo…C’MOOOOOOOON SON!!! A “g” is chump change to you mayne. Why you gambling with T-Allen anyways? Why don’t you go gamble with Rudy Gay or something, doesn’t he get paid WAY more? If T-Allen is gonna drop 19 on a team like OKC, maybe he should gamble and/or get into senseless/harmless scuffles more often. Just saying…

  • dahon

    come to chicago…juice!

  • alex80

    @ R. Deahn ignorant cunt.

    Pay Mayo BIATCHHHHH!!!!!

  • http://bulls.com airs

yikes, alex80 havin a bad morning.

  • tony knorr

If they would have given them both knives and had a good old fashioned knife fight my money would have been on O.J. i hear those athletes named O.J. are handy with a knife. But in a straight up fist fight you don’t mess with a cat named Tony they are always bad ass.

  • C.B

in the end of the day, o.j mayo is a much better ball player then tony allen, and thats what really matters

  • http://klatschendom.wordpress.com/ speedy

    @C.B.
Not if they are playin’ cards.

  • http://www.twitter.com/dfrance21 dfrance21

    But who told?

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

    Tony “Soprano” Allen?

  • fruizm

    @tony knorr……even tony kukoc?

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com Michael NZ

Cards or women. Always cards or women, as Bill Simmons would often note.

  • http://theurbangriot.com The Nupe

I don’t understand how there was no discipline taken by the coach on neither player. If it was as ‘simple’ as Allen suckerpunched Mayo in a single hit fight, then Allen should have been disciplined. I just don’t see how you can let both guys off free. Seems that Mayo has been on the trading block for a while, maybe this just lowers his perceived value by the team and they’ll end up trading him for a second round pick.

  • tony knorr

@fruizm especially kukoc he comes from a country so war torn that it has its own international criminal tribunal. thats pretty bad ass. The balls guys like him and vlade divac and drazen petrovic had just to play for their country in the early 90′s were epic.

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

Yea only people from chicago can fight. Ok. Sounds like mayo was talking tash, tony hit oj once, then it was broken up. I dont see how tony doesnt get suspended for a game or fined. …. Whatever.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

He doesn’t get fined because Mayo was popping off and welshing on a bet. That’s serious business in the NBA. Plus, clearly OJ ain’t popular in Memphis.

  • http://www.twitter.com/TheDiesel Anton

This never would have happened if Harrison Ford was on that plane.

  • Michael

yeah because being from Chicago means you must be hard. GTFOH.

  • ClydeSays

Why do these dudes fight over isht like this? The result will be even MORE money out of your wallet when the team fines and or suspends you. Plus Tony is a little nuts. Pay him and stfu.

  • http://sjfklfsl.com Jukai

Hahah Allen, you don’t gamble much, do you?

  • Hum-B

all chicago people are badass. usually so badass they are bumming cigs and asking me for rides.
