Andre Miller: Blake Griffin’s No All-Star

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

When the All-Star reserves were announced last night, fans and media began complaining en masse about who was snubbed and those that supposedly did not deserve to be All-Stars this season. NBA players, on the other hand, took a much more diplomatic approach to things.

Well, most of them anyway.

Andre Miller lamented teammate LaMarcus Aldridge’s exclusion from the All-Star game, and used the opportunity to bash Blake Griffin and the hype that surrounds the explosive rookie. But, um, Andre Miller is no hater according to Andre Miller.

The Oregonian brings us the quotes:

When told Aldridge did not make the team, Miller cursed. “It’s all publicity and hype,’’ Miller said. “The league don’t appreciate the blue collar workers. They don’t appreciate that. They make their money off the high-flyers … That’s a slap in the face to LA.’’

What particularly irked Miller, who is in his 12th NBA season, is the selection of Griffin, the Clippers rookie. Griffin is averaging 23.0 points and 12.7 rebounds. “They are putting this guy on every ESPN highlight. Yeah, it’s cool because fans want to see that, but you isolate him from his team,’’ Miller said. “Especially … he ain’t made nobody better. It’s basically his rookie year, as an All-Star? LeBron James didn’t make an All-Star team as a rookie.’’

“LA was supposed to make it. He was supposed to make it,’’ Miller continued. “We have a better record than those guys (the 19-29 Clippers), and LA is putting up just as good numbers. Now, you are not goin’ to see a lot of highlights – Blake Griffin highlights and stuff like that – but they are giving these young guys too much respect. Too much respect to the young guys. It’s good for him personally; I’m not no hater. But I am biased toward my teammate. No. 1, we have better record, and No. 2, (Aldridge) is just as good and he has paid his dues.’’

Miller and Griffin of course have history — the two got into a highly amusing shoving match two months ago, for which ‘Dre received a suspension.

Andre Miller is right to a degree. There is a tremendous amount of hype around the Blake Griffin Show, but here’s the thing: it’s totally deserved. Despite the discrepancy in team records between the Blazers and Clippers, there’s absolutely no way LaMarcus Aldridge should be an All-Star over Blake.

Stop hating, Andre Miller.

@Dako24 – I highly doubt The Seed ever hyped up LeBron. Dude’s one of the biggest LeBron haters on here.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Kevin Love or Blake Griffin… Who is the better player?

  • rob

He’ll make it as a yao replacement! LA in LA 2011. dont worry bout it dre..smh

  • HAMMER

A lot of hateration on Duncan. He’s n the twighlight of his career. This very could possibly b his last all-star game. Just enjoy him while he’s around people. He deserves much more respect than he is getting

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Blake Griffin.
    By a landslide.

  • rob

kevin love wont make it because who the hell cares bout the timberwolves? who the hell cares about klove? rebounds? anyone can get those. look at tyson chandler, he gets rebounds but does that get him in? no. the twolves have won only 11 games. does klove play defense? no, not in his vocab. lamurcus aldridge will get in so no need to worry. i wonder how the commish even decides on who gets in. panel of voters?

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Blazers have no love for Griffen. There was the incident where Miller shoved him to the ground, and in the next game Aldridge threw an (accidental??) elbow to his jaw to stun him long enough to go around him to the basket. Maybe mad that being a big fella, he sat out a year only to return at full-force, unlike our guy.

  • tavoris

co-sign hammer – Duncan is doing a heluva job this year.

  • http://www.boogiewillaims.com Boing Dynasty

Andre Miller, you got a basic game, tell ya b*tch hurry up, we dont wait for trains…

  • http://nba.com EJ

All star games are about entertainment and exciting play, so guys like Duncan, Odom and LA aren’t the best for them. I want to see sick dunks and highlights. People would be so dossapointed if they got Aldridge over Blake in there.

  • bradley

andre miller just lost a fan, btw andre i hope your still not rockin that stupid god damn string around your neck

  • JL

yah as much as I love Duncan’s game, he got in on merit alone and also his team’s record. He should have been left out and LA and kevin love makes it for his spot and yao’s injury spot. but seriously there are lots of deserving players on the west squad this year. East, em… not really. they put 4 celtics on there! and I couldn’t really argue. except bogut for garnett. or josh smith for garnett. But that’s arguable.

  • http://bedotwater.bandcamp.com BE.water

Lamar Odom used to play in the Rucker. there’s no way he wouldnt entertain fans.

  • riggs

andre’s mad cause his girl got a crush on blake

  • horsey

its a popularity contest to make the most exciting show. if people cared about the hard workers or wanted to see defense Rodman would have played in more than 2 all star games.

  • skittles05

    @allenp

Elton Brand avg 20 and 10 i am pretty sure as a rookie as well….BUT BG is most definately an ALLSTAR…there is no way any sane person can disagree with that, any attempt to do so is just being different for difference sake or being a HATER…

  • Omar

Allen P is on point today. The coaches pick the best player as they should.
Duncan > Blake > Aldridge > Love. Yes Duncan is still better than all of those guys. I could understand Blake but how many of y’all is picking LA or KL over Duncan if it were your team cause if you do, you wouldn’t have that job for long.

  • KwamePooh

im kool with duncan and griffin. still respect klove`s strong season…. really dont care bout LA.
@Allenp after duncan elton brand had a 20-10 rookie season

  • Zogs

Well as of RIGHT now K love has officially been named an all star by David Stern as Yao Mings replacement*****

  • KwamePooh

haha now miller has his blue collar guy with klove lol

  • http://nba-point-forward.si.com/ datkid

so much of my comments were deleted…smmfh

  • http://slam brad williams

andre is an idiot, remember the pull down of blake.his respect of blakes work ethic is about as high as his vertical leap!!

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Skittles is right, Brand did put up 20 and 10 as a rook. Damn he was good.

  • http://counterkicks.com Quinned

just watching ESPN they said Griffin had 41 straight double doubles. Lies! he only got 7 reb when they played the wolves last month. Just wanted to spout off about that really pissed me off it was the chick anchor too

  • Archer

Blake is already in the rookie game, so why is he in the all star game too.??….i think thats stupid becuz its taking up a spot for other deserving players…Aldridge, Monta…and Love just made the all star so thats cool……i just don’t think a Rookie should be on the all star team when their in the rookie game…

  • Zogs

Quinned: It was a mix up between love and griffen

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

ZACH RANDOLPH WAS NAMED PLAYER OF THE MONTH AND HAS HIS TEAM IN THE PLAYOFFS!!!!! IF IT WERENT FOR THE HISTORICALLY HORRIBLE CAVS, THE LWOLVES WOULD BE THE WORST IN THE LEAGUE. TOTAL BS!!!!!!! ZBO SHOULD HAVE MADE IT. FUCCN PLAYER OF THE MONTH!!!!!

  • MikeC.

Hometown bias swings votes almost every year. If there’s a guy on the bubble who is an ASG hometown guy, they tend to get in. David West was an All-Star when the ASG was in New Orleans. Sure, he had solid stats but there were guys with better stats than him that year. It happens. I also think the coaches pick a guy that won’t mind catching splinters. There’s always that veteran guy that plays 8 mins in the first half and he’s done. For years it was Malone in the West and Ewing in the East. The Rasheed was holding down the 8 mins and done for the East. KG seems to be that guy now for the East while T.Robot can do it for the West. Good balance for the younger cats with bouncy legs.

  • MikeC.

Just to clear up a misconception, Blake won’t be playing in the Rookie ASG as he was selected for the big boys’ game. The league doesn’t make players play in both games.

  • Ronald

@allenp: how is Blake griffin putting up better numbers than TD did as a rookie? It’s not just PPG and RPG that counts y’know.

  • Clipperfan

Archer, that has to be the dumbest argument ever! Eff the Rookie game. He’s deserving of the All-Star selection so he should be there. He probably won’t even play in the rook game anyway.

  • http://slamonline.com Ugh

Stars. All-Stars. Not All-NBA. How hard is that to understand?

  • http://gregoden.com roybot

Bottomline is there are way more deserving West players that should be in the ASG than the East. They couldn’t find anyone so they had to put 4 Celtics, and even then I personally dont feel like there are any big East snubs. East should give up 2 spots to the West this year haha

  • Justin

@I dont Concur…Blake Griffin is not this decade’s Vince Carter. He’s this decade’s Shawn Kemp. And team records should absolutely not matter. This game is for what you’ve done as an individual, and Griffin has been an absolute beast. There would be a bigger uproar if he DIDN’T make it

  • GBoy

Blake Griffin does not need to be or deserving of an all star berth. what did he do? just dunk? does he hit a game winner? does he elevate the play of his teammates??? Dre is right, he is just there for the showcase…wait till DRose dunks on his ugly mug… way more west players deserving then the blake show…hahaha!!! pathethic!!!

  • Ivan

    Andre Who????

  • hey

the coaches voted for the reserves, maybe Miller’s coach is one of the many who voted for griffin lol coaches
Griffin had the NBA season high in points & set a franchise record, before lebron topped it the other day

his numbers are climbing as the season progress..

i mean who is the last rookie to average 22+ppg 6+reb 4+ast?? i cant think of anyone else but the great michael jordan

blake is no jordan, but jordan was an all-star his rookie year too, & the bulls didnt have a winning record until his 4th season.

  • tavoris

@ronald-I dont’ even have to look at Duncans stats to know that Griffin is posting higher scoring, rebounding, assist, and FG% than Duncan did his rookie year. The last rook to put up better numbers than Blake Griffin is Shaq.

  • lexluther703

    Andre Miller.. C’MON SON

  • KwamePooh

@gboy 23 ppg 13 rbs, 23 consecutive dd (longest streak by a rook 1986), 2 40+ games the first rook since iverson and the season not even over yet, 47 pts most points scored in a game this season wit durant, and so on…
but right what did he do…
and maybe you shouldnt just watch the highlights of griffin… because he is doing more than just dunking…

  • HAMMER

Can’t believe Love got in over Lamarcus. If it weren’t 4 lamarcus my blazers would be sitting…well…right where Love’s team is sitting. Bottom of the barrel! How the f*ck does a guy (excluding his dub-dubs) get in the all-star game while his team has 11 wins!? Even Love was shocked he got in, or so he says. Still, what a boatload of crap!

  • tavoris

Love isn’t shocked…he can’t be because he was felt snubbed 2 days ago

  • Ronald

@Tavoris: You really should look at the numbers then. 21ppg/12/rpg @55fg% and 2.5bpg with 2.7apg. And y’know. Duncan actually won some games during his rook year.

  • Andrew

@Rob, Stern selects the replacement player/s based on the number of fan votes they received. Love received more fan votes than Aldridge so thats why he was being named for the game.

And Love shocked to be in? Especially after the campaign he came up with to make the all-star team? Please.

  • http://nba-point-forward.si.com/ datkid

I’m actually really glad klove got in…i had like 3 posts talking about how much he deserved it….unfortunately they got deleted. with that said. Blake Griffin absolutely deserves to be in there ahead of Zbo and LA yes they’re putting up great #’s but he’s putting up almost equal #’s AS A ROOKIE. only hall of famers such as duncan and shaq have done that, that’s historic. Plus the ASG is about the fans..and the fans love griffin. personally I hope LA finds his way in there somehow though. That man’s putting his team on his back! (really though if portland’s whole team were healthy they’d destroy everybody). that’s just my opinion though. personally. Zbo should be given almost as much consideration as LA but not as much since he’s got so much more help. Dwest is a good player…but there are just too many good forwards in hte west right now.

  • http://nba-point-forward.si.com/ datkid

oh my god….slam why do keep deleting my comments smmfh

  • http://nba-point-forward.si.com/ datkid

basically griffin is all star bc the fans love him and he’s one of the only rookies capable of putting up a double double right off the bat.that=historic. we all know why klove needed to be in there. and LA should probably be in there as well, because he’s got no help and he’s putting his team on his back. um is zbo in there? bc he should be given the grizzlies record.

  • tavoris

@Ronald-and that is better than 23pts/12.7rb/3.6 ast HOW?
SN-I didn’t say that BG is having a better season than Duncan’s rookie year. I said his numbers were better.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

One of the biggest All-Star snubs in the last 10 years was definitely Al Jefferson back in ’09 I think. 23 and 11… At least Love doesn’t face a similar fate.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Thx for the info on brand. Didn’t know that.
