Bulls Trade James Johnson to Raptors

Trade season has officially begun! Via Yahoo! Sports’ Marc Spears’ Twitter: “Bulls trade forward James Johnson to Raptors for a second round draft pick, source said.”

As CBS Sports notes, the trade gives Chicago some extra cap room, which could help the Bulls make a separate deal before Thursday’s trade deadline.

UPDATE: Yahoo! reports it’s actually a second-round pick.

Good player who deserves some burn.

Wow I really had hope for the guy when he was traded, and he always showed flashes of real potential out on the court. I really hope this doesn’t come back to haunt us and he flourishes somewhere else where he can actually grab some minutes.

I KNEW all that “Bulls will stand pat” talk from GarPax was BULLSh*t.
Hopefully they do use that extra cash to make a run at a legit starting 2 by Thursday.
As for James Johnson, yes, he’s a great guy, awesome teammate, could probably beat the sh*t outta 90% of all NBA players and is absolutely oozing with potential.
Besides that, the Bulls have bad luck when it comes to getting rid of “busts” and watching them flourish somewhere else (Shannon Brown, Tyson Chandler, Thabo Sefolosha, etc.)
But the fact of the matter is, Thibs just doesn’t trust him. And he wasn’t going to get any burn in Chicago anyways so I’m kinda sorta happy for him. Except he’s going to the Raptors.
I wish him well, and whenever I think of JJ I’ll remember that game he had against the Suns earlier this season when he had 12 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks in 20 minutes.
He actually looked dominant in that game. It was just a glimpse of what he’s capable of.

    Wait, I’m hearing conflicting reports.
Is it a first round pick or second round pick?
Unfortunately, if it’s a first round pick, it the Miami Heat’s, which probably won’t be any higher than like, the 26th or 27th pick.
If it was Toronto’s pick, that would be hella dope. But it’s not :(

^^^ When I think of JJ, I think of that play in the playoffs coupla years ago when he was guarding Lebron and Lebron just crammed it on him. I hadn’t anyone get dunked so hard in a while.

  • http://nobulljive.com/ Enigmatic

@Nick – That was actually just last May.
True. Poor Johnson. He was actually kind of doing a decent job on LeBron prior to that, too.
I mean, about as good a job as any rookie could ever hope to do defensively on LeBron James.
JJ was starting to get a little confident thinking he was checking “the king”, started getting a little swagger about him.
And then LeBron boomed on his a**, and I SWEAR you could almost just see JJ shrink like 10 inches.

  • Oh nose

Will Pax and co. finally make a move? Or is this just for freeing up cap space for the upcoming FA….?

  • http://nobulljive.com/ Enigmatic

I think they’re gonna make a run at a shooting guard using this pick, the extra cap space and probably Keith Bogans.
OJ Mayo, Rip Hamilton (if his contract is bought out), Aaron Afflalo, JR Smith, Anthony Parker and Marcus Thorton are the names I’ve been hearing.
Parker is the most likely to land in Chicago.
Mayo or Afflalo is who I’d want most.

  • http://thephotoriot.com davidR

with the way afflalo’s been playing, he’d be amazing for the bulls. mayo would definitely be intriguing

  • Keith Bogans

JJ wasn’t gonna get any burn here, hopefully he does something in Canada, good luck to him! and its the heats 1st they got from toronto..

  • Drew

I always get James Johnson confused with James Jones, cause everyone calls them JJ.

  • http://bulls.com Harry Twatter

Word on the street is the Bulls now have one more 1st rd draft pick to offer in a trade. OJ Mayo is the name

  • Fboy

James Johnson is not worth a 2nd round pick. Toronto you just got bamboozled. I’m just glad he’s not keeping the seats warm for Chicago anymore.

  • Chiz

That was a good move now if they can land a legit SG WATCH OUT !

  • Chiz

Yeah OJ would be nice !

    Damn, Slam.
    First y’all say:
Bulls trade forward James Johnson to Raptors for a second round draft pick, source said.
And then you drop this update:
UPDATE: Yahoo! reports it’s actually a second-round pick.

  • LA Huey

I see the balance of power has shifted again.

  • mike

Does this headline really have 17 comments? I’m ashamed to say I’m number 18. This never happened…

  • http://slamonline.com kap

James Johnson’s top career highlight is getting dunked on by Bron in the playoffs last year.

  • http://Zogs.com Zogs

Is JJ a small forward? If so, derozan could lose some minutes to him

  • Oh nose

I hope the Bulls don’t get Anthony Parker…he’s old and slightly better than Bogans…

I’d love Aflalo, Mayo or maybe even J.R. Smith.

Has Memphis publicly stated that they were shopping Mayo?

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/load-o-bull/2011 Diesel

This trade gives the Bulls $3MM in cap space and 3 first round draft picks this year to work with. OJ Mayo or Courtney Lee come on down.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

I doubt Derozan will lose minutes to JJ.
    Diesel, how you been homie?
I’m not that high on Courtney Lee.
    I’d love Afflalo though.

  • http://sdfklf.com Jukai

I know he’s making millions more, but I wonder if JJ regrets not going into MMA… I mean, he’d be near the top, y’know? Same way Van Damme sort of regrets making millions but being the joke of the acting world instead of being one of the best fighters ever, but having no money.

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/load-o-bull/2011 Diesel

What’s up Enigmatic? I’ve been good man. I’m with you on Afflalo. I think Lee is just as good though. The folks over here have been throwing around Lee, Mayo, Parker, and to a leeser extent JR Smith. I definitly think this JJ trade is the first move towards another trade. Why else make a trade to clear extra cap space? Otherwise they could have done this trade in the offseason. Even if they don’t make any trade, I like this Bulls team going into next season with money to spend and a surplus of first round picks.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

You really think he’d be that good in MMA, Jukai?
And yeah, Diesel, I gotta say GarPax have been doing a surprisingly good job the last few seasons.

  • http://sdfklf.com Jukai

Enigmatic: He was 12-0 in his amateur career and would compete int he pretty barren super heavyweights. So, probably, yeah. Wouldn’t make any money since UFC and Dream don’t have super heavyweight though!

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Yeah, but as an amateur don’t you compete against other amateurs? How would he fare against a pro?

  • http://sdfklf.com Jukai

Enigmatic: I don’t know, I never watched him fight, I just read that he had a LOT of talent in MMA since he was so huge that it was really hard to take him down, and he was an incredibly technical kickboxer so it was hard to box him.
And since he’s made no impact in the NBA, if he never becomes anything more than a backup forward, he may regret things. I’m not saying he made the wrong choice, f*ck it, I’d go for the money! But as I said, you see guys like Van Damme who made MILLIONS sulking and sighing and saying “I wonder what would have happened if I stayed as a fighter…”

  • http://sdfklf.com Jukai

I mean, outside of KotC, I don’t know any organization that allows for Super Heavyweights to fight.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

I don’t think it’s anywhere near being too late for him if he wanted to try it though.
Kid is like what, 23 years old?
But like you said, they’d have an awfully hard time trying to find other fighters his size to compete with.

  • http://sdfklf.com Jukai

I’m sorry, he’s actually only 245… so he’d be competing in Heavyweight in MANY competitions. So he’d be fighting Lesnar and Velasquez and those greats.
    Yeah well, that’d be interesting.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Let me know if you get a chance to hit up Ryne, Juks.
Kinda interested to see what he’d have to say.
Let him know I’m that little homie who also saw Candace Parker dunk in my high school gym back in the day when he was still sports editor of a the Naperville Central school paper and I was still sports editor of the Dundee Crown school paper.

  • greg

super heavyweight is 265 + i think he could have done mma. MMA is big here in toronto so he will definitely have a chance if things dont work out… although i dont see how you cant put up good numbers playing for a team that doesnt attempt to defend people

  • http://sdfklf.com Jukai

Enigmatic: Too late brosef, hit him up already. If you got a fakebook, it’s easy to find him (it’s his name, Ryne Nelson). Likewise, my name’s Noah Leaf if you want to hit up me there. If you don’t got a facebook, I can give you my e-mail, but I don’t want to give out Ryne’s cause I dunno if he wants it available to the public.

  • rayray

James Johnson – keep repping Samoa! Best fighter in the league – Samoan style – we are just born hard! Manuia!

  • http://nobulljive.com/ Enigmatic

Jukai – haven’t gone on Facebook in a minute. Don’t remember my password.
I can hit you up at your email if you don’t mind posting it.
