Carmelo Anthony: ‘I Feel Like I’m Still Dreaming Right Now’

by Tzvi Twersky | @ttwersky

After months of it living as a rumor and hours of it being a reality, Carmelo Anthony finally donned blue and orange warmups and faced the media at 5  p.m on Wednesday evening for the first time as a member of the New York Knicks.

“I feel like I’m dreaming right now,” said a beaming Anthony, former and current teammate Chauncey Billups sitting by his side on stage. “I’m sitting here in one of the best places in the world in New York City. I’m about to go upstairs and play in my first basketball game as a New York Knick in one of the best arenas in the world. I’m excited about that.”

The Knicks officially acquired Anthony, along with Billups, Renaldo BalkmanAnthony Carter and Shelden Williams in a three team, 13 player deal completed Tuesday. In return, they sent Wilson ChandlerDanilo GallinariRaymond Felton andTimofey Mozgov to the Nuggets. New York also sent Anthony  Randolph and Eddy Curry to the Minnesota Timberwolves, receiving Corey Brewer in return.

While playing in New York means a lot to Anthony, the star small forward knows it means just as much to the city.

“I think New York needed a moment like this,” said Anthony, who will wear No. 7 for the Knicks. “I think when they got Amar’e it brought some excitment back to the city. Now, like Amar’e said, New York basketball is back.”

With 28 games left in the regular season, Carmelo is aware that the Knicks, who currently stand at a respectable 28-26, won’t become Championship contenders overnight. But he does have high hopes.

“Will we win a Championship this year? Who knows. That takes time,” said Anthony, who signed a 3-year, $65 million extension with the Knicks. “But at the end of the day, we’re moving into the right direction. I felt like I wanted to be part of an organization, part of a team who had some upside and knew what the future was holding.”

Carmelo Anthony’s dream is deferred no more.

Melo’s “slicing and dicing” a couple of buns, gotta love Clyde Frazier.

Damn, only 3 years, I’d have like to have seen him signed up for 4-5 years, that doesn’t sound very reassuring to me… Plus I want to hear what Chauncey has to say about being a Knickerbocker. Crazy times but we’re due for some excitment after the lost years.

Anyone signing a contract with the knicks should use caution. Remember the Stevie Francis/Stephon Marbury experiment?? Not hatin’, just looking at recent history..

Looks good in the orange and blue

@Anon…I really tried to watch the press con, really because I was intrigued about what Chauncey would have to say, but they just kept badgering Melo with the same darn questions….dissapointed in you NY media

  • http://google J-Ro

I just heard that Kirk Hinrich got traded to the Hawks for Mike Bibby….

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

    @J-Ro…..u forreal??

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

woah, just seen it on AJC….dang, ATL is making some horrible moves…shoulda never fired Mike Woodson….anyways, from what I can gather at least Bibby hasn’t been in the best form. The Wiz can use his scoring mentality though. Just not enough scorers on that squad

  • http://google J-Ro

@TBRK- So i guess Bibby is going to come off the bench in Washington. However, Hinrich might be a better fit for ATL. Good defense, pass first, and can shoot the three.

Might be a dream for you Melo, but judging by the look on Chauncey’s face as he’s sitting next to you on the bench in the 3rd vs. Milwaukee, he’d rather be in Tripolis right now. Looks miserable.

Uum, I’m all for the players exerting a lil more control over their careers, especially because their labor makes the league popular BUT am I the only one who feels Deron and Melo’s situations will be used by the owner’s to enforce a hard-cap? I think Utah and the rest of the owners are doing a lil PR project, turning the public against the players so that the players get the bad press during the lockout. They know a lot of people will start viewing players as money hungry and selfish. Ultimately I think Lebron is going to be the reason players lose a lot of the power they now have. Think about it, he Wade and Bosh essentially will be painted as the creators of a trend that sparked the percieved all-time height of the “Diva” era. Other players, present and past, don’t even know how their public criticism of these guys played right into the hands of the owners. If anyone thinks the owners won’t get everything they want as a result of all this, you have to be blind. Lebron and Co, Melo, and Deron will all be viewed as the “reasons the players are out of control”. It’s too bad. I was looking fwd to an NBA season this fall.

I guess it’s back to being the president of NAMBLA for me.((Sighs))

  • JTaylor21

Enigmatic, you may be right but if that’s the case I’m all for the players locking out to fight that hard cap BS! That’s one of the reason why I love the NBA, the freedom and right the players have to choose which teams they want to play for. Just imagine if the NBA had rules like the NFL, Kareem to Bucks then LA, Shaq to LA, Wilt to LA, the Big 3 to Bos and so many other trades/free agent moves that changed the NBA landscape never happens. I say keep it how it is.

    Enigmatic what is the NAMBLA!!!

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

@J-Ro…thinking about it you’re right. Atlanta never had a true PG. But here in DC we’ve never had a true scoring threat at that position, he’ll probably play of the bench but see a lot of time with John on the floor

Wow. Didn’t think Fake Enigmatic was capable of writing more then three sentences at a time.
I am mildly impressed. But still not amused.
And JTaylor, you fall for it every effing time.
Can’t believe you don’t know the difference between that idiot and me.

This sh*t is getting old, for real.
    Grow the f*ck up, dude.
Stop using other people’s screen names.
    It’s sad and pathetic.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

I’m all in favor of a hard cap and franchise player tag (of course I’d also like to see all contracts automatically include NTCs for the players.) We need to see some continuity and loyalty on both side of the isle. Bottom line is that this Superfriends nonsense currently gripping the NBA is bad for business. Unless you want to go to a multi-league relegation type system ala the English Premier league where you get to watch your Lakers, Celtics, Heat, and Knicks play every year joined by whichever small club has managed to get good for a year or two.

  • krys

This sucks for Bibby. The Kings should never have traded him. They probably wouldn’t be on the chopping block as they are now. I used to be a Kings fan for only one reason. Mike. However I did love the team when they made the WCF in 02. The biggest jackass move they made was firing Adelman and then, player by player killing the maginificent seven (Webber, Christy, Bibby, Jackson, Stojakovic, Miller, and Divac) Now, Bibby will not be in playoffs this year because of this bold move. I mean Charlotte was seated many wins below ATL. Why couldn’t they wait til next season? Dumb move I think. But I follow Mike so I guess now I have to root for Washington? Argh!

  • GoodTrade

Welcome to the Melo show NY. You are going to let under .500 teams like the Bucks hang around and steal more than they should while watching Melo get “his” on 10-25 and 8-23 type nights. If you let the other team stay in it he will be clutch late tho…

  • http://masterx1983@hotmail.com marchalmadness

and the east keeps getting better and better while the west makes it more and more easy for LA lakers, too bad

  • http://slamonline.com Enigmatic

I’m such a typical Tea Party nutcase. Someone has to get these colored fools back in line like the $40 million slaves they are. How dare these Negroes, a few caucaisions, and two Asians think they have a right to have a say in their careers?

Welcome home, Melo. I got goosebumps last night watching Carmelo AnthoNY make his debut in the MECCA at the WMFA. I’m getting goosebumps again just thinking about it. Just as important last night was Chauncey “Smooth” Billups, who looked GREAT (as expected), and you can clearly see he’s a WINNER and the perfect floor general to mesh this team together by the time the real season starts. Billups will rub off on Douglas for the better. All the Knicks need by the trade deadline (or after someone gets bought out) is another a 4/5 player for frontcourt depth. The MECCA will be atop a lot of free agents list. The Knicks are back!

This will be one of my favorite Basketball memories ever! It’s been too long since my squad made me this happy!

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=U-s8d7rDyJQ IAMORANGE4EVER

@Anon e Mouse – Carmelo is signed through the 2014-15 season. That 3 year extension gets added onto next season (2011-12), which is the final year of his last contract with Denver that he was using as his leverage to get traded, due to the fact he had the right to opt out before signing this most recent extension.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/officerbarbrady what

Bibby is washed up. Good deal for the Hawks short term. Not like the Hawks develop their draft picks anyway, so might as well trade them.

i hear kevin love has been traded to the thunder? yal help me out here is this bs or what
