DeMar DeRozan Done With ‘Prop’ Dunk Contests

DeRozan is a tad salty following his loss in the Dunk Contest this past weekend, and is not a fan of gimmicky props at all. The AP reports: “Asked Tuesday if he thinks he was robbed when he didn’t reach the final of the competition, DeRozan replied, ‘I think so.’ Blake Griffin of the Los Angeles Clippers won by leaping over a car to edge Washington’s JaVale McGee in the last round. ‘I’m a dunker. Dunk contests, you go out there and dunk. I’m not into all the props and everything,’ DeRozan said. ‘I try to come out with a creative dunk and do it and go from there. My fans liked it and you can see the reaction from a lot of people afterward. If there’s a dunk contest next year I’ll do it. But not no prop dunk contest.’ A Los Angeles native and former player at Southern California, DeRozan says he was disappointed in how the contest played out in his hometown after spending extra time practicing and preparing creative dunks. He didn’t include props such as the car, a stuffed toy and using an extra basket as other competitors did. DeRozan feels the extra elements cheapens the contest. ‘I think a lot of people probably look at it like that. It seems that way when you watch it,’ he said. ‘This year I put thought into it. I practiced, had dunks ready and everything. It is what it is. I did it two years in a row. I’m good.’ Asked if he would reconsider, DeRozan said he would only compete again if the All-Star game is held in Toronto or if the rules are changed to eliminate props.”

    he definitely got robbed.

  • bnets

    definitely was robbed

  • http://4point0show.com Wes

Derozan definitely got screwed. The whole dunk contest reminded me of how rap music has become all about the hype and production around the showcase, but nobody cares about the lyrics anymore.
We haven’t seen “everything” in the NBA dunk contest. The longer people say that, the more pressure there is to bring out props.

  • ch

got robbed last year, got robbed this year again

  • Trevor

    robbed

  • Overtime

The best dunks in the contest were the non-prob ones.
    IE: Blakes 360
    Derozen between the legs
McGee’s one arm reverse (that really was cool)

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Blake should have finished third. His creativity was horrible. Jumping over a car hood (not the roof) from 3 feet away from the basket was about as impressive as the last sh*t I took. Derozan and McGee had that thing on lock.

  • NJ4Life

off the glass elbow was insane

  • Jer dawg

Sorry Demar. Those were some sick dunks you had. I’m not going to defend it. Hate the game.

  • Jer dawg

Come to think of it, there wasn’t props until last dunk anyway. The judges screwed Demar. It’s still, Hate the (political) game.

  • robb

DeRozan had two of the best dunks of the night, the scores he got were ridiculous. I’m sick of those props too, and I don’t wanna see another guy like Mcgee again, I don’t care how athletic/difficult and original he was, the guy is booooooring his dunks put me to sleep every time, lame style.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

His first two dunks were two of the best dunks ever. The 44 on that elbow alley-oop through-the-legs was a joke. The judges are terrible every year.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

They gave Blake a 46 on a much worse dunk than DeRozan’s first, and he attempted it more times than Demar… Just so he could do that KIA commercial in the Final Round. I’m not mad at Blake though–it’s the NBA and their lame “subliminal but not really subliminal, more like blatant” product placement.

  • Blaspemy

Kenny Smith ruined this years dunk contest and the judges with their asinine scores.

  • youngmuggsy

Did Blake really bring out a choir for a dunk? I couldn’t bear to watch on after the Serge Ibaka child actor stunt.

  • http://nba.com EJ

It’s not just the fans that are stupid, even the judges were SUPER biased. Blake didn’t get either of his dunks on the first try, and they weren’t even that good. Both of Derozan’s dunks were 50s in the NBA dunk contest.

  • http://nobulljive.com/ Enigmatic

    Yeah, Denar definitely got robbed.
Teddy, good to see you calmed down some, although posts like this from Saturday night were pretty funny –
“DeRozan did a through the legs OFF THE SUPPORT STAND, FROM BEHIND THE BACKBOARD. AND IT GOT THE LOWEST SCORE TONIGHT. WHAT THE F*CK?!?!?!?!?!?!?!”
Anyways, ultimately I think the lasting memory of the dunk contest for me is gonna be Chris Webber yelling at Dwight for something only Webber knew what the hell he was talking about, and Howard’s confused look.
And Blake Griffin selling his soul to Kia.

  • http://nobulljive.com/ Enigmatic

    *DeMar

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

It was even worst when, last year, DeRozan did a CRAZY reverse through-the-legs, reverse TWO-HANDER. They gave him a 42..

  • David

Demar’s dunks were nice. Prop dunks suck. What was with the choir?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

By this years dunk contest criteria, all any contestant has to do is have a car as a prop and do a basic two handed dunk over the hood to get a 50. I’d do that sh*t every round.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

I mean fu*k, Lil Nate jumping over a slightly bent over Dwight was 10 times more impressive than this was….and about 3 feet higher!

  • YEAH

its a shame how a beautiful city like t.dot will ever get the all star weekend. they hating cause its in Canada.

  • Dagger

You want to know why the dunk contest has been broken for so long? Here’s a big part of the reason. The best dunks and dunkers have never needed props. I can’t imagine Jordan or Dominique or Carter for that matter dunking in a superman costume after changing in a phone booth. Either way, Demar had lost before he even took the floor. Maybe Lebron had a point in refusing to join the contest, year after year.

  • http://nobulljive.com/ Enigmatic

Here’s a question that needs to be asked – do ANY of the NBA’s players, the worst of whom make about $450,000 a year or so, even own a f*cking KIA?

  • http://jooo Max

Derozan should have finished first, Mcgee 2nd, Ibaka 3rd and Blake 4th.
Since when is a dunk from AFTER the ft line not a 50?

  • http://jooo Max

    Behind*

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Yeah, Lebron came out looking the smarter for THIS decision……no one had a chance to win it against Blake. Michael, Nique and Vince could have done all their greatest dunks and Blake could have did any old dunk and won it. Well…maybe not quite that bad but…..

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

    @Enigmatic:
I bet Kurt Rambis has a Kia. A used one, at that.
He has a reputation around The League for being a notorious miser.

  • JTaylor21

There were only about two props used, the car and the teddy bear unless you’re counting an extra rim as a prop.

  • http://staticseth.blogspot.com Seth

He may not have won, but DeMar had the best collection of dunks. Don’t worry, DeMar, people saw and took notice. And to think he was Brandon Jennings’ replacement!

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

Cosign everyone here. Definitely got robbed last year, and again this year. DOWN WITH PROPS!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

That little Asian kid was a prop, the choir was a prop, homeboy’s mom was a prop…..it was a propfest!

  • Waggle

Demars one handed windmill was sick. Serges free-throw dunk was the best since mj. The only dunk I liked of blakes was his very first missed 360 attempt. That looked sick… The one he put down was nothing like that first attempt

  • KSupreme

I just watched the dunk comp again…I’m pissed off, Ibaka got robbed for his from the free throw line dunk and demar derozan….you were robbed

I do have to say, the 3 ball dunk was my favorite part of that night. But it is a shame that Ibanka can glide from further back then Mike or Doc did and get 5 points less because he didnt have any toys….

  • KSupreme

KIA sponsors the NBA…you think if Blake was planning on bringing out a honda civic, would he have made it to the finals…cosign enigmatic….blake griffin better be driving his lousy KIA to practice everrrrryyyyy day!

    my girlfriend loved it.

  • Yesse

I think Ibaka and Derozan both got robbed. The dunk contests first round was one of the best rounds i have ever seen, but the second one was one of the worst. Mcgee’s dunks are terrible and Blake’s first dunk was alright. Kenny, i mean the other guy is acting like an idiot and brings a choir in there. I mean seriously? Jumping over the car was cool, but in the end it didn’t look as cool as i expected it to be.

  • Ryan D.

This contest had some decent dunks but I would agree with Demar and say the props watered down the event. Blake Griffin jumping over a car should not have recieved the hype it got from the judges or Kenny Smith who ended up being the most annoying person of the event. Also, the two basket dunk was purely talent based because it showed Mcgees length, creativity, and athleticism that didnt require a stuffed animal to be considered “innovative”. Hopefully the NBA does not let this get too out of hand where props become the norm in every dunk. When MJ and Dominque where going at the crowd was crazy hyped just based off of their respected styles going head to head in a obviously “I want to win this” attitude. In all seriousness, this needs to go back to a show us what you can do in the air and not something in a few years that can duplicate a Harlem Globetrotters act.

  • http://www.michaelcho.com M Cho

Yeah, the dunk contest was so corny this year. Demar definitely deserved a better finish. That lob dunk & Ibaka’s freethrow line jam were the only ones that got me excited.

  • Kyle

Blake Griffin’s first dunk would have finished it if he hadn’t missed it. His third one after missing two wasn’t nearly as awesome.

But when he jumped over the car… I just thought, wow, didn’t this guy just miss his first full season due to injury? And having Davis throw him the ball outta the sunroof is even more dangerous. But hey, Dominique was robbed by Jordan and Spud Webb. It happens… the 7 footer who dunked from behind the line(unlike Dr. J and Jordan)was really impressive. And it got a 44?

  • Red Star

I agree DD! The dunk contest is a bit if a joke! They need to go back to the old rules, none if this 2 minutes to complete a dunk and using crazy props!

  • Kyle

The only reason Blake Griffin won was the hype and electricity when he was dunking. That’s why it broke the record for viewers… but it didn’t even come close to Vince Carter’s performance in 2000. He owned the competition, the audience, and proved he’s the best dunker EVER.

  • Turk

igudalla and derozan robbed from hype of their competitors, same with gerald greens barefooted between the legs dunk. although everyone saturday was guilty of taking 50 tries on atleast 1 of their dunks. They should change back to 3 strikes and your out. Make it more valuable to land a dunk on the first attempt.

  • Josh Drake

DeRozan wasnt robbed he probably would’ve made the final last year if he’d dunk the dunks he did this year, but people are also saying Ibaka was robbed and McGee and Griffin were spectacular, so i think in the end the best men got into the final and in the end the best man probably won. However I agree with him to the extent that I think that the Dunk contest is cheapened not by the props, but by the acting which goes on like on Ibakas second dunk with the kid. There was no reason why he couldnt have done it without the kid. Or in 2009 with the Superman/Kryptonate thing they had going on, I mean a dunk should be judged on what it looks like not what players are wearing whilst doing it. Plus, I think they should stop getting the fans to vote on the final, stop turning everything into a popularity contest NBA! Some things make sense to vote on, but I’d rather not vote than have someone else in China or somewhere cancel out my vote for those who truly deserve to be there with a vote for there favourite player or someone who plays with there favourite player. I’d say at least 3 out of my 5 favourite players werent on my vote. Wow, that was a bit of a rant, just needed to get it all out there.

  • B Dizzle

best dunk of the the contest: demar’s reverse windmill off the bounce…worst dunk of the night: blake jumping over the car…if griffin pulled off the corkscrew 360, he may have deserved to win but since he didn’t, it was definitely politics…t-dub would smash the blake show in a dunk contest, props included

  • JoeMaMa

This comes down to Toronto/Canada getting no respect. Demar just didn’t have the hype. At least he lives in the best city.

  • First & Foremost

Just to be different – we’ve seen dunk contests without props. We’ve seen people go between the legs, we’ve seen 360s, we’ve seen people take off from the free throw line TWO HANDED like Josh Smith did a few years ago. We’ve seen windmills, and people “jumping” over others.

Unless you can do a flip in the air and come out dunking, the contest needs props. Putting a sticker on the backboard to show how high you can jump proves a point. Blowing out a cupcake on the rim, that adds to the dunk. Jumping over the hood of the car, take the car away and see if it gets a 50. Demar was robbed but without props the contest stalls.

Demar DeRozan got robbed big time. I lost a ton of respect for Griffin and I didn’t have much respect for him to begin with. With that said, this contest showed that LeBron should compete next year. If Blake Griffin who is nowhere near as popular as LeBron could win with crappy dunks, LeBron might win with basic dunks, lay ups, and off balance 17 footers

  • Paps

We know DeMar’s the real champ.

  • kurt

I agree I like real dunk contests this prop B.S. is outa hand. Honestly I would respect all these guys as dunkers alot more if they paid more homage to the art of dunking not as a circus. It’s become a gong show but that’s what happens when you let the David Stern get ahold of things they need to do what the NHL has done and turn the ALL-STAR events over to former players to tweek the events.

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

maybe one round should be designated for props, and lets have that round not be the final one

  • hbomb

They should split this into two events. One can be called the circus act or something and you can use a trampolene to jump over the hoop and drop 10 balls in an oversized rim with goofy glasses on (that’s my “creativity”), fans get to vote (but not really, they just say you vote), and a champ is pre-determined prior to the event being held. For an example of what this would be like, see the last 3-4 years of dunk contests. The second event can be a real dunk contest where educated judges can watch players and score them based on displayed talent. Run that for a couple of years and see which one gets more viewers

  • hbomb

ps-kudos demar, i think this is something classic fans of the nba and dunk contests have been wanting to say for a couple of years and good on him for coming out and saying it. also, blake griffin will skateboard to the hoop and lay-up 4 balls at once to win the 2012 “dunk” contest (heard it here first)

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

LOL @ Enigmatic. Good point. Chances are no NBA player would ever buy that KIA in the first place. They probably gave the prop away for free though… Probably to Griffin. Or one of the judges as bribery to get Griffin into the Final Round.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Blake had the worst dunks overall. Book It!!

  • http://www.garrettelliott.com Garrett

What they need to do is allow the 3rd and 4th place finishers to have a sudden death dunk-off, where they pick one dunk and do it for 3rd place. That way the crowd gets to see what the other guys had up their sleeves. I’m sure DeMar had something pretty awesome saved in case he made the finals but now we’ll never know.

  • matthew

they hate on DD cuz he is a raptor.

  • Will Lee

He would have won any dunk contest from 2001-2010, maybe not that with Howard throw in dunk. But the rest, he’ll win with ease.

  • the Dude

No props … Derozan is my dunk contest hero.

  • Hyxas

It’s so typical for the NBA. It’s all about the money, Blake is their money at the moment, so he had to win no matter what. Sad but true.
Ask Chuck, he didn’t agree Blake won the contest either.

  • TrailBlazing&SportingLisbon

contest was a joke,Demar got robbed, best dunk of the nighy by a mile was his second, “showstopper”…Griffin´s only decent dunk was the first, fu(kin shame…Ibaka´s free trow line nice too…IM WITH DEROZAN! #FIXED

  • http://shreeve10@googlemail.com Steve

I agree, I don’t like props, If you can’t do it in a game, it shouldn’t be allowed in the dunk contest.
Fan voting should be scrapped. Fan voting turns the dunk contest into a popularity contest rather than who did the best dunks.

  • SomeGuyFromToronto

    So robbed.

  • http://www.realgm.com Gman

Robbed for sure. I think we all knew Blake was winning regardless.

  • Chris

I thought the DC was horrible. Props suck bigtime. I thought I was the only one who thought this, as all I could read afterwards on ESPN and soforth was how GREAT the dunk contest was, and how creative bla bla bla. Come on now, grabbing a teddy bear with your teeth has NOTHING to do in a dunk contest and is LAME as hell. Gimme a break.

And blakes final dunk? what the hell, you bring in a choir? cheesy as hell.
