DeMarcus Cousins Suspended by Kings

Rookie removed from plane, won’t travel with team.

by Adam Figman

Before the NBA Draft, nobody questioned DeMarcus Cousins‘ talent—the concern was whether or not he’d be able to keep his head on straight.

Last night, it appears, he did not.

Via NBA FanHouse:

Kings rookie forward DeMarcus Cousins was removed from team plane bound for Phoenix after an altercation with teammate Donte Greene, according to two sources close to the organization.

The incident, which was first reported by FanHouse, immediately followed a loss to Oklahoma City on Saturday night. Cousins, who had overcome early-season struggles of the performance and personality variety recently, is expected to be suspended for at least one game. Kings basketball president Geoff Petrie did not immediately return a call for comment.

According to the sources, Cousins (whose postgame interview can be seen here) was furious at the last play in which Tyreke Evans missed a three-pointer in the final seconds of regulation that would have won the game. Cousins, who had been calling for the ball in the post in the final possession, watched angrily as Greene inbounded the ball to Evans for the final shot.

After the buzzer, he ran the length of the court to catch up to Evans and Greene and was letting his opinions be known as he blew by them to enter the locker room. According to the sources, Greene and Cousins began exchanging words inside the locker room. The situation then escalated, with both players taking swings at each other before they were separated.

From the sounds of it, there seems to be a lot of tension between Evans and Cousins, both of whom are considered to be huge parts of the Kings’ future. The idea of having to split up the two, especially so quickly and with so much still ahead of each, is pretty absurd, and it’d be a shame and an extremely rash move if Sacramento’s front office were to proceed in that direction.

There’s little to like about this situation, but, hopefully, everyone involved (especially DMC) can take this as a learning experience and move forward.

    that sucks

  • Clipperfan

I really wish the T-wolves would have drafted him. This would have been just added to the khan legacey.

  • kc

if they showed that much fire on the court they might win some games.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I saw that coming. Horrible shot horrible display by cousins.

Tyreke doesn’t play to tie — he always goes for the win. Similar play a few nights a go with Denver. JR Smith rebounds a free throw miss with about 6 seconds left and IGNORES Melo next to him calling for the ball and decides to push it down the court, dribbles into traffic, has nowhere to go and has to pass it to one of their bigs on the baseline who has to jack up an ugly shot at the buzzer that hits the side of the backboard.

  • youngmuggsy

Reading the article gave me the impression they stuck a parachute on his back and pushed him out the door mid-flight.

  • jarrett

nick tha quick – i dont think its really comparable when jr smith doesnt give it to Melo, when Donte Green decides not to give it to Cousins. I mean he’s Demarcus Cousins; who hasnt won sh*t in this League and is not the teams best player. His good play of late has him thinking he’s warranted the last shot in an nba game. Cmon now rookie! Yur a Rookie!

  • riggs

lol this dude is an idiot, what happened the last time they gave him the ball to win it? he flubbed it badly. At least tyreke has had more experience kid.

  • majic

hes just goota play and control what he can. Wasnt a bad shot by Evans. The two need to be supporting each other if were going to move forward.

  • http://saida.e@hotmail.com KennyD

Yea when i seen him running the court i was like “RUN DMC!!”

  • http://staticseth.blogspot.com Seth

I saw the last play. He wasn’t even open. I dunno why he’s complaining he should have got the ball.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

I predict before Cousins’ rookie contact ends, one lucky team will get him in a lopsided trade. The Kings are in way over their heads with Cousins.
He needs to go to a team where neither the coach nor the players will take his sh*t.
Imagine if he was, let’s say San Antonio?

  • B-E-Z

I hear you about sending him to a team that won’t take his sh*t….but honestly I’m not sure if he’s that smart to understand. I think if he was on a team like the Spurs etc….He might still think he should be taking the last shot.Cousins strikes me as the type of person who is never the problem but everybody else is.

  • Bimmer

This kid is in rage mode this week. Killing my fantasy team.

  • r2j

Nobody is winning in this situation as far as the Kings are concerned. It’s a lost season for them anyway but they need regroup cause they will be in more games like these. Let’s hope next year’s draft pick will be a lot different from DeMarcus Cousins.

  • Heals

When watching the game I thought he was pissed about a potential “no-call” when going for the rebound and was going to give him credit for just storming off into the locker room instead of making a scene on the court. Guess i was wrong…

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Okay, so I wondering if perhaps Cousins was having a good game and wanted to get the last shot because he was on fire or something–which would make sense. But it turns out he shot 5 for 14 from the field… Evans, on the other hand, had 30 points on 50% shooting.
He got a pretty good look and it just hit the front of the iron. Not a bad shot to take for your team’s best player.

  • Darren

Greene: “Surely Evans has to get the last shot?”

    Cousin: “DON’T CALL ME SHIRLEY!!”

    And that’s how a fight starts…

  • http://www.boogiewillaims.com Boing Dynasty

Whats wrong with Reke taking a 3 at the buzzer? There was a 28% chance that thing was going in…

  • http://www.boogiewillaims.com Boing Dynasty

Sidenote: Cousins and Glen Davis…related? “YOU BIG BABY” – mark jackson©

  • http://slamonline.com rudy

Man, this is embarrassing. Honestly, I understand Cousins. Obviously not with his antics that followed but as far as the last shot of the game. Tyreke has blown so many last possessions that he shouldn’t even be an option that late in the game. Especially from 3. It’s a rough patch and something those guys are going to have to work out. They better.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

    ROFL @ Darren.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Boing Dynasty ftw.
That was a horrible shot by Evans. Fi e seconds left and you settle for a leaning deep three when you are down two at.home? Get in the lane get some contact or at least get a closer contested shot.
But Cousins was wrong. You don’t show up your teammates like that even when you are pisses. He is young and emotional. The Kings would be fools to dump him. His upside is higher than Tyreke’s.

  • Brown14

The kid wants to win, give him credit for that. Maybe he’s smarter than us all and his crazy antics are just a cunning plan to get himself traded to a decent team willing to take a chance…

  • matt

Bargnani + other pieces for Cousins + other pieces

  • http://slamonline.com zoom

Cousins is proving everyone who passed him up in the draft right. There were red flags about his maturity since his Kentucky days and he insists on acting like a fool as a pro. He just doesn’t get it. I hope a vet takes him under his wing this summer…and I hope he loses 15 pounds of that fat. This kid will be a monster if he gets it together mentally and physically.

  • Yesse

That’s exactly how i feel when i don’t get the ball to the post.

  • Shem

lol imagine the raptors get demarcus cousins

  • LeBron de Con

Cousins is going to start in the next Exorcist movie. He’s gonna be spitting green stuff outta his mouth and his head gonna be spinning on his neck.

  • http://slamonline.com walt williams

He’ll be fine. He was the best player and best overall pick from the last year’s draft and still is. Jordan and Barkley also punched teammates.

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

Thanks for somsoe perspective, Walt. Jordan didnt come up in the TMZ so everyone acts like he walked on water. If he was playing today he might’ve got Tiger-ed.

Dude needs to get his mind right no doubt, but it’s nice to see him playing the game with some passion. Compare his play to Favors, who can’t seem to work his way around the concept of hussle and is currently residing in Avery’s dog house. Like Doc Rivers said, it’s easier to suppress fire than light it.

  • batumswrong

Tyreke needs to find a better shot. And DMC has gotta know that Evans is the leader, he should be taking the last shot. A rookie cant be b*tchin about ish like that, HES A ROOKIE. kno ur place

  • computerdude

If Cousins does not get his stuff together, he will be out of the league in 2-4 years.

  • http://sdfklf.com Jukai

People comparing Tyreke to Jordan and Barkley are laughable fools. Cousins isn’t knocking up women and making it rain in the clubs. This has NOTHING to do with TMZ and this would be reported anywhere: he’s going after his teammates, he’s making dumb plays and he’s been suspended so many times I’d have to take off my socks to count.
I really hope the dude just gets snubbed out of the L for a time. Vet nonsense nothing.

  • Bryan

    Cousins is a fool

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

Cousins needs someone who he respects.
Paul Westphal is not the right fit for him or Evans. And, that team doesn’t have anyone in that locker room who is able to keep the young players in line.

  • First & Foremost

@The Philosopher – As an owner you MUST back your coaches before you endorse a player’s actions. If the players feel the run sh*t, they just won’t try as hard everythime they want a new coach.

Jukai: you’re crazy. You don’t let go tremendous talent. Would a big ad agency, law firm or consulting firm let go his top earner because he’s a d-ck? of course not. it applies to hoops as well: you only cut someone loose when he is not worth the trouble (i.e., ai not getting a job now for what he had been doing his whole career). cousins is clearly worth the trouble.

grow up. your not looked upon as a star. reek is the go to man in the clutch. and i think if they could do it over a million times he’d still take that shot just like kobe, melo,Lbj, paul pierce
