Do Celtics Have Mental Edge Over Heat?

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

Though LeBron James tried to play it off, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh were more forthcoming: this third consecutive loss by the Miami Heat to the Boston Celtics (who were severely shorthanded) truly hurt.

According to James, these losses will mean very little once the postseason rolls around — LeBron told the story of how in 2007, Cleveland swept San Antonio during the regular season, only to have the exact opposite happen in the NBA Finals.

There’s plenty of truth in that, but preferably sooner than later, the Miami Heat need to get over the mental hump and beat these Celtics.

Dwyane Wade thinks it’s something all teams go through before they can become champions. He likened it to Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls’ early struggles against the Bad Boys-era Detroit Pistons.

From the Boston Globe:

“You’ve got to get over it,’’ said Wade. “I’ve been through this before. You look down the line, everyone has been through it, MJ [Michael Jordan] went through it with the Pistons back in the day. [Getting over the hump] can happen any time. We got plenty of time, it can happen in the playoffs. That’s when we would like it to happen, anyways.”

There’s one final regular season showdown on the schedule between these two foes, before what seems like a pre-destined Playoff war in the Spring.

It’s a mental block Miami has to conquer. The postseason can’t get here soon enough for us and them to find out if they can.

  • http://www.nba.com/celtics lightsout

the cleveland-san antonio thing is a poor analogy. the current celtics bear no resemblance to the 07 cavs, and the current heat are a far cry from the spurs. give me a break.

  • http://www.gmx.net Darksaber

    Yes we can. Wait, what?

  • Clownfish31

Why not. At the moment, yes they do.

  • YokoDMV

At the moment and if Rondo continues to play KG style ball against Lebron, yes they do.

  • logues

    lebron is not clutch

  • http://jooo Max

    Yes, for another 2-3 years.

  • Mamba

The Heat cannot beat the Celts once, so how will they be able to beat them 4x in a 7 game series, lol! I love it. James ran to Miami thinking he had his ring coming, but I doubt that with the celts playing the way they are, and missing lots of players.

The Lakers are the only team that can really match up with Boston.

  • http://slamonline.com The Fresh Prince of Nsam

At the moment, no they can’t

  • A.B.

Man I hate how Wade keeps comparing situations that the Bulls went through to what the Heat are going through. News flash, you guys have done nothing yet! All of these comparsions he keeps making blows my mind

  • http://Www.slamonline.com Royal

AB…..D-Wade is from the Chi, the Bulls might be the only other team he knows to compare them to

  • benno

lol – eboy did you watch the game last night – hahahahahaha.

    Celtics rule!!!! you got nothing!!!!

  • Riggs

this is nothing like the cavs/spurs series, the celtics actually turn it up another notch when its playoff time. If you want examples look at all last season when they were actually the team to lose in every round.

  • Red Star

Maybe Wade should apologize for his comment saying that Bosh, James and him might very well be the best big 3 in NBA history before playing one game together! I’m sure Boston’s big 4 has not forgotten this!!!

  • hoodsnake

    At the moment, I guess…

  • HAMMER

Mos def. Nuthin 2 b ashamed of. The heat r the celtics b*tches. Plain and simple

  • flipnoyce

Yes they do at the moment, but we all know that it’s not the post season yet. Miami’s time will surely come, but for now though the Celtics is still the team to beat in the east.

  • JTaylor21

Until Mia matches Bos intensity and physicality, they do.

  • http://slamonline.com Yknot

At the moment no they don’t. They have a nonexistent bench though.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

The Celtics have a much deeper more talented team, hence they have the mental edge over the Heat, and they’ll continue to have one should they face each other in the Eastern Conference Playoffs. Really, the only team that will have a legitimate shot at beating the C’s in a 7 game series when the real season starts, are the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals. Book it!

  • A.B.

I can respect what you are saying Royal. Hopefully that is the reason he keeps making those comparisons. Also does anyone else realize that if Chris Bosh does start to make a consistent post presence on this team the Heat will be doomed? Although he had a decent game yesterday, if he does not start to post how does he expect to punish opposing bigs? Look at how fresh all the C’s bigs looked all game! They technically did not have to protect the post at all. I dont care what anyone says, if Bosh just wants to shoot jumpers so be it. But he is not giving the Heat what they really need out of him, a post presence.

  • Justin

Red Star, I’ll take Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman over any Big 3 combination from Miami or Boston

  • bashmo

The 2011 NBA postseason will be one for the books. Can’t wait for April to roll around…

  • http://slamonline.com Spaceship Jay

Unless Rondo suffers from a season ending injury (God forbid), the Heat won’t get past the Celtics. The C’s play spectacular defense against teams that offenses are generated by one-on-one play. And I’m constantly baffled by why so many people deem Lebron as the best.

  • http://bulls.com C-Lo The Great

knock on wood, spin three times, throw salt over shoulder for rondo

  • http://youtube/use/Uncle05Sam Earl

Do we really need (Michael Jordan) after MJ?

  • http://http//portlandfan1203.blogspot.com Karley

Haha Celtics have very experienced players and they all have time with eachother and they play well together.. Maybe playoffs or next season Heat can overtake the Celtics but for now Celtics are way better mentally

  • vtrobot

why because one thing happened (MJ eventually got the best of the pistons), is another thing (MIA getting the best of BOS) supposed to happen? it’s so odd that malone and stockton never got the best of MJ, because MJ eventually got the best of the pistons. ??????? at least MIA can take comfort that this C’s core will be retired pretty soon.

  • Bravo

kobe is clutch and miami juss aint.

  • Jalepino Sauce

I ain’t tryin’ to be filozofical but That moment has passed. :-)

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com Michael NZ

This has got to be rhetorical.

  • greg

6-17 in game seven is just soooo clutch

  • ClydeSays

The Heat look better every time I see them play, but if they couldnt win against the C’s who had 7 healthy players, how can they win a playoff series against them?

  • Mike from Spain

Lakers already got a W over this dominating Celtics team… heh

  • http://nobulljive.com/ Enigmatic

    At the moment, f*ckin’ right.

  • Omar

No, they don’t. They just have the better team, lol.

  • ab40

untill lebron grows some sam casell size you know what’s the heat aren’t going to win big

  • WhiteBoy

At the moment, yes they do.

  • http://www.double-technical.blogspot.com Zee!

Sooo Ebiatch, Lakers beat the C’s and split the season series. What’s up with ya boys? Good thing this Boston team is on the way out after this season….

  • http://NBAForum.net Da Holy Karron

Only player on boston that is 4 sure to play in da playoffs is Ray Allen them bodies are not as young as they used to be KG PP Rondo are prone to getting hurt But boston is madd Deep and the greatest basketball team ever in the NBA bc they are all on da same page and all about TEAMWORK the Cs are fun to watch fan or not

  • http://NBAForum.netforsmartphones Da Holy Karron

MIA need this challange its almost like a movie that we been watchin 4 over a yr and im liking all of it

  • http://slamonline.com Ugh

  • paul

Funny how no one considers the possibility that the Cs are better.

  • add

    yep

  • monkeyball

Spurs vs. Celtics in the NBA Finals! Not the most exciting athletes, but the best TEAMS.

  • http://www.nba.com/celtics lightsout

yes, they have the mental edge, not to mention the coaching edge, the experience edge, the competitive edge, the depth edge, and the chemistry (chemical?) edge.

  • monkeyball

    ^^^ All true

  • monkeyball

Oh, and Eric Spoelstra is the worst coach on a contending team since… Mike Brown!!! Years from now, when we compare Lebron’s career to Kobe’s or MJ’s or Bird’s, we should remember that he’s been cursed with awful coaches. That matters.

  • http://slam.com mitchell

hey to all you kobe fans. you like ball hogs? cause kobe was 1 in the all-star game how many assist’s did he have? oh wait when does he ever have assist’s??????????
