Kobe Bryant: ‘You Can’t Beat Me in June’

Despite their stumbles heading into the All-Star break, Kobe, Phil and the rest of the Lakers say they’re ready for the remainder of the season. They’re certainly not lacking for confidence. From ESPN: “I’m concerned but it’s no different than last season or the season before that,’ Bryant said. ‘There’s always concern, look at San Antonio, they have the same level of concern we do. Just like things are rolling, things can fall apart. Everybody is concerned at this point.’ With 25 games left in the season, the Lakers (38-19) currently have the third best record in the West and the sixth best record in the league. While they might not be able to catch the 46-10 Spurs for the top spot in the league, the Lakers are within four games of claiming the second best record in the league, which would at least give them home court in the Finals if they are able to get past the Spurs … [Phil] Jackson said the Lakers’ place in the standings and the amount of games left in the season should raise the urgency of a team which has looked bored at times this season waiting for the playoff to come around … When Bryant was asked how he feels about being an elder statesman he simply laughed. ‘It doesn’t matter to me,’ he said. ‘You can’t beat me in June. All the other stuff doesn’t matter.’”

    Kobe! Lakers 4 Life!!!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Unless you’re the Celtics….or the Pistons.

  • nick

actually the celtics and pistons have something to say about that.

  • Riggs

really kobe? how about those years other than the ones where the lakers won a chip?

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

    Kobe’s bored.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Good thing the C’s lost Perkins and Ron Ron stepped up in game 7. lol

  • DRose4MVP

The Pistons beat the Lakers in 2004, long time ago. And the current Pistons have no chance of even making the playoffs. The Heat have no idea how to finish a game unless they’re up by double digits in the fourth quarter. The Lakers are bored. Not playing for anything until the playoffs start. Not afraid of the Heat (the Christmas Day game meant nothing). The only teams that can give them a competitive 7 game series are the Spurs and Celtics.

its called confidence guys. You can’t win without it. Of course he’s been beaten in the Finals. All I’ll say is maybe you can’t be beaten in June, but you better make sure you can get your team as a whole on that same plane…if not…

  • 1982

    @iamorange4ever
Good thing the C’s lost Perkins, Ron Ron stepped up, and Rasheed Wallace retired at halftime, lol. Good call.

I don’t think they’re done, but he’s a little overconfident right now, especially since he wasn’t the reason they won the last one.

Kobe’s play in the Conference Finals got them to the Finals. He averaged 30 and 10 assists. When it’s winning time, there’s still no one in the league like him.

  • bashmo

@BRK you’re right man, but how far does confidene go before it should be considered as damn near stupidity?

lets be honest for a second. The Celtics may have easily taken game 6 of the finals had Perkins not fell. There may not have even been a game 7. And knowing how good the Celtics are of a playoff road team, its not like they hadn’t been in those shoes before. Kobe should worry about meeting Boston again because this year the guys in green are deep as hell. The Celtics-Lakers series is 1-1. Doc Rivers said it best: “The Lakers still have not beaten our starting lineup in a series.”

The Lakers better pray they dont meet the Celtics again in June.

  • http://jayemmbee23.tumblr.com Clutch Performer

@Drose4MVP we talking about all time, Kobe is going acting like he’s never been beat in June, which is why we say the Celtics and Pistons have a word to say bout that

Or rather you can’t beat a team that won’t be playing in june lol

  • http://brimartin13@gmail.com Brion

    Whats he supposed to say?

  • http://ballislife.com Stephon

    Vintage Kobe

  • Jer dawg

2004-05 season ; Shaq quit, everyone else was old, and Karl Malone was injured. Yeah, Kobe dogged it because nobody else wanted it.
2007-08 season ; Bynum was injured and Gasol was left to do all dirty work and against Celtics lineup, no way he was winning that.
When i read this headline, I went “oooohh!”
Kobe just called his shot! And then i realized LA is so lucky to have a psycho winner out there come playoff time.
No, i don’t like their effort as a fan during stretches of the season, but at least they give me a reason not to watch every game and allows me to do something else constructive. I’ll see Lakers come June.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

You can also look at it like: you can’t beat me THIS year when we’re in the finals. :P

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

@bashmo, even as a Kobe fan for all of my adolescence I can’t disagree with a word you say. this is all true. In my honest opinion that 2008 Laker team that lost to the Celtics was the best they have ever been since.

  • Alex

Regardless of track record, if you are a fan of a championship contending team, this is the mindset you want your players to have. I’d be worried if he were to say something like “we’re gonna play the game and see where we end up in June.” Many leading players for championship teams will usually have borderline insanity.

  • Riggs

    @Brion: nothing at all.

  • HAMMER

Im a KB8 supporter and all, but I feel that kobe needs 2 b reminded that the pistons and the c’s might, just might, beg 2 differ on that statement. Congrats on the MVP tho

  • Coney Islander

Everyone knows Those type of teams play for summer games and not spring.

  • http://www.double-technical.blogspot.com Zee!

Please believe it. Believe it please.

  • robb

    I hope you’re right No. 24

  • JTaylor21

So you beat the celtics, magic, pacers, and nets by yourself?

  • http://slamonline.com JL

that’s great kobe. now start showing it. the season is almost over. great to have the confidence, but you gotta back it up by actually getting a high seed and making it into the finals. how about getting some 3′s to drop for a change. maybe trade for a 3pt shooter. celtics have pierce and allen and house and even nate. lakers have…. steve blake and fisher? do artest and barnes and brown even count? they are not steady at all. in fact none of them are. not looking good guys.

  • MUBWAR

a bit too confident mamba. Remember even if the 2, 4 and 5 position is solid for L.A. Artest is playing like sh1t (don’t know bout Barnes n how he’ll recover) and the point 4 the Lakers is the weakest in the NBA. Hopefully the heat will make it but the C’s go the Finals its a sweep.

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

I wonder if his team will let… HIM lose in “June” since you know, it’s only “him” and not his “team”. What a great team player. smh
You can’t beat “me” in June.
As opposed to, you can’t beat “us” in June.

  • hillbomber

    What about April or May?

  • mick

if boston is healthy lakers dont stand a chance

  • Overtime

Whereas Im sure Lebron has never, ever uttered the word ‘I’

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

^Not when it comes to talking about what his “team” aspires to do. It was always “us”.
    Always.

  • JOOST

I don’t kobe is a bit too confident with himself. This year the league is stacked with good (elite) teams. More so than last year. And the Lakers aren’t doing that well, which I cannot say for the other teams. I don’t hear pierce or lebron sayin: ‘you can’t beat me in June’…KOBE needs to handle his stuff right NOW 1st! Then he can say sh*t..

  • JOOST

    don’t = think

  • LakeShow

if the lakers are healthy no one else matters… kinda a big if though.

  • JoeMaMa

The Lakers have won the last 2 titles, and he’s won 5. I think he can say that kind of thing. He’s wearing the champion’s crown. Call him arrogant, conceited, whatever you want…but he’s proven to win in June. And he’s thrown down the gauntlet to every other contender. Gonna be a fun playoffs!!

  • Heals

    Tell that to the 08′ Celtics, 04′ (?) Pistons, 06′ or 07′ Suns…

  • unrel

you guys are idiots.. if someone was in your face and said.. ‘you can’t beat me in june’.. you guys going to pull out the history books.. your guys’ keyboard swag is too high..

  • http://jooo Max

    @Heals
U can stop the team, but not the man
    (06,07 suns i’m talkin bout)

  • truthteller

Everybody keeps talking about the Celtics losing Perkins as the reason why the Lakers won last year.Ok, well the Lakers lost Andrew Bynum the year the Celtics won and Ariza hadn’t played all season so wasn’t in shape. So, I think it evened out pretty well.

  • Shem

Lol before pau I didnt hear any of this bs

  • Yesse

Well, i hope the Lakers are still playing in june.

  • http://http//portlandfan1203.blogspot.com Karley

Haha I bet all you laker fans play ball. And i bet you dont pass either. All Kobe fans are ball hogs just like Kobe he could be getting a triple double everyday but he doesnt like to pass. True Statement!

  • MUBWAR

Hey Karley that’s called a ball hog, a ME first player a…too many. I mean how else can you score 81 in modern day basketball.

  • truthteller

@Karley: jordan didn’t like to pass either. Even during their championship years he still took more shots than anybody on the team and he was still considered a great player!

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

^Jordan made half of his shots…

  • Michael

That attitude is probably why he was the best for so long.

  • http://425DstSEWashingtonDC20003 Brandon Harrison

i love all you haters… count the rings. for all the problems you have with Kobe and the Lakersthey just keep rolling

  • Rainman

im pretty sure the Celtics stopped u last year too in game 7…but it was ur teammates and ur teams size that saved ur ass?

it was barely u beating em…

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nick Tha Quick

When all these Laker haters talk, all I hear is music coming from the world’s smallest violin…

  • http://brimartin13@gmail.com Brion

Jordon always tried to get his team going before taking it over in the 4th.

  • Jesse

    Check MY stats

  • http://dude Chukaz

Kobe didn’t say he’s never been beaten in june. He just said that he’s not worried because come june, nobody’s gonna be able to beat him. you ppl are taking the quote out of context

  • the nerve

Kobe, win games now my man. Right now, you know, the present. Lakeshow can’t buy a win over the top tier in the league. You may have the ring but this is THIS season. And as u can see, not even the Cavs fear the lakers.

  • LakeShow

Nobody likes a winner anymore. some mad idiocracy going on in here. no one likes to win games more than Kobe Bryant. thats a fact. thats why i like him more than anyone else.

  • the nerve

    I am such a lil b!tch

  • the nerve

    a lil c0ck sukin b!tch

  • the nerve

im lookin to hook up wit a dude who has enough nerve to penetrate my bum? anyone?

  • the nerve

no takers? i’m just a lil b!tch. cute lil bum… lemme kno

  • LakeShow

Damn nerve ur nasty lol. Kobe has 5 rings though guys. Who else in the league is in that winning category?

  • http://slamonline.com Enigmatic

Basketball has always meant a lot to me. I spend 70% of my day focusing on the handsome NBA players, and the other 30% at my NAMBLA meetings. Busy life but hey, someone’s gotta live it.

  • Jackie Moon

@Philosopher Kobe and Jordan have taken a different mix of twos and threes,so don’t even mentiion FG%, it’s misleading. To that point, if you look at their points per FGA, it’s almost identical.

  • http://slamonline.com Enigmatic

Srry Moon, but Kobe’s highest shooting FG% isn’t even in Jordan’s top 10 seasons. You are soooo reaching it’s pathetic. BTW: Nice to see another “rainbow” sport’s fan. ;)

  • http://twitter.com/SylvanusUagbor Sylvanus

I dont see why people hate someone with confidence and love someone who scared to ruin their image (Lebron).

  • Michael

Some other players in the league need this killer instinct. I have never really liked Kobe much cause i dont really like the lakers, but you gotta respect his drive to win games, if nothing else. He is very similar to MJ in that regard.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

    Kobe i agree. BOOK IT!!

  • Hurricane

@ Enigmatic- With your little field goal % stuff “You are soooo reaching it’s pathetic.” Kobe’s pts. per attempt is 1.312 while Jordan’s is 1.316, I think that shows how close they really are.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

@Hurricane – that wasn’t me, that was a fake Enigmatic using my screen name, stupid.

  • http://slamonline.com Enigmatic

I may be, I may be wrong..but I doubt it! Eat bricks sukkas!

what i dont like about kobe is that his attitude/behaviour has never been consistent throughout the years…

  • joel De Pasquale

too much for Kobe player his problem of too much cannot beat it unfair for other team nba !
