Larry Drew Thinks Fight Was Good for the Hawks

The Marvin Williams/Shawne Williams tilt last week was highly entertaining, and according to Larry Drew, it was a good psychological boost for his team (even though Marvin clearly lost). The AJC reports: “Hawks forward Marvin Williams said he doesn’t expect any carryover from his scuffle with Knicks counterpart Shawne Williams when the teams meet again in a couple weeks. But coach Larry Drew thinks the fracas with New York on Friday could have some positive effects on the perception of his team’s toughness. ‘I really do,’ Drew said. ‘I don’t condone fighting in any shape, form or fashion. But I know this is a game where emotions do get high. The one thing as a team, you don’t want to be labeled a ‘soft’ team. … You don’t want to be put into a situation where you feel things got tough and you backed away because that [reputation] will carry around the league.’”

    Williams beat his ass

I think that fight was good for The Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, and that’s about it.

  • robb

@Max that wasn’t a fight, there was no winner.

  • fruizm

    which williams won???

  • toinefan88

Williams def won. It was obvious. Williams didn’t do any damage in that fight.

Another thing this Williams on Williams violence really disturbs me.

@max: if you’re making a joke, that’s funny. if you’re being serious, that’s also quite funny. i think the worst that marvin got was when he slipped on the floor.

No mention of Charles Oakley, Anthony Mason or the general toughness of guys in the 90s in contrast to today’s players?

Hawks are so soft this year its silly…..just mediocre in every facet…..shoulda never fired Mike Woodson…..you can’t fire the architect and finish the building…

whenever people mention tough, they mention like 5 guys from the 80s/90s and thats all they got.

    The game is different now.

  • EGOT

So, he DOES condone fighting then, right? Gotta love it.

Check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlatS54e6_s&feature=related Lots of old-school NBA ‘brawls’. The best part is around the 1:55 mark where one of the Davis boys mushes a ref right in the mouth after punching a Kings player in the back of the head. Maybe the players in the 80′s and 90′s weren’t actually tougher than the players today, but they sure did get away with a lot more.

Anyone who thinks the Hawks should have kept Woodson has clearly never seen a Hawks game in their lives. Larry Drew isn’t Gregg Popovich but pretty much anyone is an upgrade over Woody.
