Reports: Nuggets, Knicks, Wolves in Carmelo Talks

by Ryne Nelson

The TWolves may have entered talks with the Knicks and Nuggets in the potential Carmelo Anthony blockbuster deal.

Marc Berman of the NY Post reports:

A source familiar with the situation said the Knicks, Timberwolves and Nuggets have discussed a three-team trade that would bring Anthony to the Knicks while Randolph, Wilson Chandler and Eddy Curry’s expiring contract would depart.

[...] In the proposed deal, the Nuggets would wind up with Corey Brewer, Chandler and a Minnesota first-round pick. Minnesota gets Randolph and Curry’s expiring contract. Randolph, whose representatives have requested a trade, has long been rumored to the Wolves for a first-rounder.

Before you say these latest rumors seem a bit too good to be true for the Knicks, remember Melo only wants New York. The Nuggets clearly would like to end this circus and might be getting desperate as the trade deadline’s only weeks away. Minnesota has long been rumored to be after Randolph.

So here’s how things would break down:

The TWolves would be turning a late first-round pick and Corey Brewer (whose contract is up after the season) into Anthony Randolph.

Both Chandler and Brewer are restricted free agents at end of season. Letting one or both of them walk will save the Nuggets plenty of tax money.

And the Knicks… well, they’ll finally have their man.

@_andymac on twitter broke this story first

  • Tyquez

take westly johnson from the wolves and wilson and the first round pick

  • Atsushi

For the Knicks, its to good to be true.

  • Josh

    Wake me when something happens.

Would love to see Anthony with the Knicks. They would be very dangerous. And, I hope they keep Gallinari. Peja Jr.

  • http://www.slamoline.com Max

    This trade actually makes sense.

  • riggs

if this does go down (which i would love since it would give me a reason to go to a knicks game again) then denver’s front office is incredibly stupid. They couldve had a way better deal than this if they had pull the trigger earlier, but i guess thats what happens when you get picky and think something better is coming down the line. As for the knicks if this goes down? well played front office, probably one of the smartest things they have done in years.

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

Agree with the notion that Denver may be getting desperate.

  • DenverIsStillBetter

So we went from Devin Harris, Derrick Favors, and 3 first rounders to…this??? I think much like the McDaniel’s era, the masai ujiri era needs to end, before the Nuggets become worse than…well the Twolves, the Knicks, and the Nets!!! Like rob schneider said, “OH NO! WE SUCK AGAIN!!!”

  • nate

denver disappoints again by waiting too long and it looks like they are going into ‘rebuilding’ mode. i am a denver fan but won’t lose any sleep over melo’s departure, he already is stephon marbury – esque and should fit in just fine with the knicks, although he will be butting heads with you know who…it will be a wait and see game to see if this is a smart move for the nugs, but it has potential with the cap money and late first rounder. but they need a go-to scorer, and no one fits that bill without him right now.

  • naiym

It cracks me up these trade rumors… Melo stands to loose $ with the CBA guarenteed to happen… However he can WALK directly to NY no strings attached in June.. They will pay him less, and still get their super star.. Why would they agree to a trade!?!? I mean they are getting Melo either way..

  • AMPduppp

Since when was Chris Wallace the GM of the Nuggets??

  • hambone

at least spike gets to keep his Landr Feilds jersey

  • riggs

@Naiym: because the knicks could lose both melo and chandler after this season. Even though melo might say he wants to come to NY it’s not guaranteed and this deal is great for NY

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Why do the Knicks h@te Wilson Chandler so much? They should have extended him by now. I’m all for Anthony in New York but Wilson Chandler is too good to give up imo.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

He’d thrive in Denver though. There’s no way the Nuggets would use him just as an expiring contract–they’d likely re-sign him. So this probably works out for Chandler as well. Hmmm…

  • Scott Carter

I’m with Josh. Enough rumors, I WANT TRANSACTIONS!! Let me know when a deal actually happens, thanks.

  • http://twincityslim@yahoo.com Jahi

    I’ll check back on February 24, 2011.

  • riggs

they dont hate wilson chandler, they just think carmelo is a better player (Which he is). If they did hate chandler they wouldve shipped him off any chance they got, but they have said no to plenty of offers for him. Same goes for landry fields as well.

  • http://slamonline.com niQ

    Uber Meh.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Please get Melo to the East so we can have more controversy on who to replace him on the all star game

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Melo was born to play in a Knicks #30 jersey. CAN’T WAIT!

  • Mitya

keep my fingers crossed for this

  • matt

NYK needs to trade Gallo 4 a big if this deal does occur. Gallo & Melo play the same position. If Gallo can be traded for 2 quality pieces, that’d be ideal for the Knicks. Denver should get Gallo instead of Chandler but i guess they want to extend Chandler. Minny should ask for Fields too just to be ***holes. I think they get the short of the stick, they have to pay 4.7 million for curry for the rest of the year and they give up brewer + utah first rounder for Randolph. They should try to get something else. Also, Denver looks desperate.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

matt is right–although I really would like for the Knicks to keep either Gallo or Chandler… Both would be ideal. But Chandler CAN co-exist as a starter with Melo simply because you can slide him in at the 2 spot and he’ll fit perfectly. I’d h@te to see either player go though, both are starting to break out.
And yeah, Minnesota does lose the most in this deal.

  • Will

Corey Brewer for Melo??? PLEASE. No way this trade happens.

  • ripslam

It’s sort of scary how easy it is to envision the sans-Melo Nuggets as a bottom-feeder. Probably not on the Cavs scale, but almost. Wilson Chandler would be a great pick-up though.

  • Shem

Everyone in the 03′ draft will be gone except Dwade. How deflating…

  • slamfan4life

How the HELL is this happening?

Chicagos offer would be 1000000000000000000000X better

DENG IS ACTUALLY GOOD MAN, cmon son….cmon

  • spit hot fiyah

what happens if melo gets traded to the east before the allstar game. since he is voted in as a starter do they have to kick somebody of the east squad or to they go with 13 players?

  • james

should have gone with new jersey.. im a denver fan and if this happens they will be struggling to make the playoffs for the next couple of years, i mean were barely hanging onto 6th even with melo.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/officerbarbrady what

Why would the Wolves do this trade?

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

A testament to The King’s greatness:
Never in the History of Professional Sports has a franchise player left a team, and the very next season that said team becomes the worst team in the league.
    Unprecedented.
    Basketball holy ground…
    The King.

  • http://hoopistani.blogspot.com hoopistani

@The Philosopher: When Garnett left the TWolves to join the Celtics, the Celtics went from the league’s worst team to the league’s best and eventual champions. Twolves went from being “bad: to “OMFG bad”. I think I would rate that higher than LeBron.

  • Zeiram

Can somebody please comment on the hilarity that is Kahn. I mean after he is done stock piling pgs and wings he thought to himself, why not add another big to the mix. Yeah Beasley, Love, Millic, Pekovic and now Randolph. This spells good player development and chemistry! KAAAAAHHHHHHHHNNNNNNNNN

  • iCARNACKi

    I really don’t see how:
A-Anthony Randolph is worth a 1st rounder AND Corey Bewer.
B-How Randolph/Minnesota benefit from this trade.

If I were Denver I would be asking for Wesley Johnson, and if they get Wilson Chandler it WON’T be to let his contract expire thats ridiculous they have loads of expiring money and Wilson Chandler is probably the perfect replacement for Carmelo.

  • http://www.google.com Tristan Warneke

quick question… what happens with the all star game if Anthony goes to the east before the game??

  • http://slamonline.com Ugh

They Knicks should definitely trade Gallinari over Wilson, but Gal is the teacher’s pet, so that’s not happening. And I assume the Knicks are going for the trade rather than waiting for free agency because Walsh is saying “OMFG A TAKER FOR EDDY CURRY! SO WHATEVER THEY WANT!”

  • riggs

he still plays for the west because thats what he was picked for

  • riggs

@Ugh: theyre not going to trade gallo because the nuggets dont want him. at all.

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

    Hoopistani:
Wolves became the worst team in The League after Garnett left?

  • marc

That would be crazy if wilson does not sign the extension and resigns with the knicks in the off season. I hope that happens because wilson is a rising star.

  • http://www.twitter.com/JoshElam JE

^no, but they did win only 22 games, and they even got Al Jefferson and the 5th overall pick for him. Cavs got nothing for LeBron and the Heat aren’t winning the championship. Garnett transition is far more impressive.

  • Ryan D.

Wow the Wolves are getting mega boned on this one.
