Rick Adelman Contemplating Retirement

The losing and injuries in Houston have the coach seriously considering calling it quits following this season. The Chronicle reports: “He talked about the ‘R’ word with his wife, Mary Kay, last summer. ‘We will talk about it this year, more seriously, and decide what do I really want to do in the future?’ said Adelman, who has been in the league since he was drafted by the San Diego Rockets in 1968. ‘I think you think about it when you get to this many years in the league. Let’s be frank, it’s been really disappointing the last two years with the injuries. Then when you think you have something going …’ Adelman’s voice trailed off as he thought about the Rockets’ inconsistency this season. He describes last season, when the Rockets went 42-40 and failed to make the playoffs, as a ‘real pleasure’ because of how his team competed. He likes his players and the organization, but … ‘You certainly want to win more games,’ he said. ‘I think at the end (of the season) with my contract running out, I’m going to look at it and see what I want to do.’ It is possible, actually likely, the Rockets will have Adelman for just two more months. He came here to take over a team featuring two All-Stars that could compete for a championship. Saturday’s loss to the Mavericks was Adelman’s 301st game as Rockets coach. Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming were on the court together for 72 of those contests; none in the past two seasons.”

Adelman is a class act, but the game is the same but the personality of the players has changed. Adelman will retire a well respected coach. Now, maybe Mark Jackson can replace him, and rebuild a respected franchise.

Also in the ish of Slam with Rondo on the cover, the slam-up of Westbrook dunking on Battier, in the background Adelman’s face is priceless..
