Carmelo: Knicks May Not Jell Until Next Year

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

Despite having had to put up with a horrifically bad team over the last, oh, decade or so, Knicks fans aren’t exactly known for their patience. They demand a winner, and aren’t afraid to express this.

So, I can only imagine the look on their faces when they read this morning when Carmelo Anthony expects the team to get its act together.

Melo, not so unreasonably, believes New York might not fully jell until sometime next season.

The NY Daily News has the quotes:

Amar’e Stoudemire wants the Knicks to play together and Mike D’Antoni wants them to get through this “rough stretch” and firmly believes his offense can work for Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony. But in the wake of the team’s worst first-quarter scoring output in 55 years and a second straight loss to a lottery-bound team, Anthony had a different message. Moments after the Knicks fell to the Milwaukee Bucks, 100-95, Sunday at the Bradley Center, an unsure Anthony said this team may never reach peak performance until next winter.

“For everyone to get 100% on the same page, it might take next season,” Anthony said. “But right now, in this short period of time, we’ve just got to come together as a unit. As far as everybody jelling and the chemistry and clicking to where we want to be at, it’s going to take some time.”

The Knicks are now just one game above .500, having lost two in a row in demoralizing fashion, and slipping in the Eastern Conference standings (they’re now the 7th seed, a half game behind the Philly Sixers.)

Things have not been easy for Melo since he strode heroically into Madison Square Garden, as New York has lost more than it has won with him (with pretty much the exact opposite taking place in Denver, his old home).

It’s understandable that Carmelo Anthony would ask for patience from fans and media. Whether he gets it or not, remains to be seen (hint: highly unlikely.)

Are the Knicks going to be 49% better next season?

    LOL

    LoL @Huh?
yo i think it is ‘gel’ and not ‘jell’

    as in are you ‘gel’ling?
    instead of ‘jell’o jigglers

    Lego my ‘jell’o Melo.

seriously though. Team chemistry does take time.
This too will pass and if they Knicks can get a solid Center, they’ll be difficult to match up against with Stoudemire, Melo, Fields, Douglas, etc.

@ Huh?: I said the same exact thing to myself when I read it.

Like I said before…newyork was dumbass as hell 4 that trade..even thou mello is my 2nd fav beside d wade.he wasnt worth all that if u could hav gotten 4 free..& I dont kno why people keep, having mia,i in their mouth.with ny schedule & how their playing their gonna be 7th at very best…sad

  • T-Money

Riggs: there was no way in hell they were losing him in FA. that’s the thing. who would have scooped him up? this has nothing to do with the lebron situation where ny media conviced THEMSELVES that they were the front runners even though bron never said so himself. everyone and their mama knew that melo wanted to be in NYC.

  • CONEY ISLANER

Dantoni needs to be demoted to assistant coach and focus solely on his magical offense and replaced as head coach with someone like Lawrence Frank. I wish we’d have gotten Avery Johnson when he was available.

  • robb

    DE-FENSE, DE-FENSE!!!

lol@ calling d’antoni the pringles man

  • rich

it was the same when the lakers traded for gasol it didnt nececarily take a whole season but its hard to just plant an all star scorer on your team and expect instant success

  • floe

melo must be the first player in the history in the nba to struggle offensively under d’antoni’s system. this dude’s such a puss!

  • floe

Mike D’Antoni is the Pringles man; Phil Jackson is the KFC man; Hedo Turkoglu is the Mad Magazine man (Alfred E. Neuman).

of course it takes times for a team to jell. But they should be “jelled” already.. Seriously its just an excuse for a bad time. Just like the Heat they went through a rough stretch but everything gets better. you cant win them all.

I seem to remember the 1999 Knicks taking mad criticism too, and that turned out pretty well. I’m not saying they’re gonna make it to the finals, probably will only win 1 or 2 playoff games in the first round, but let’s give it some proper time before we evaluate things.

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com Michael NZ

    Carmelo: totally overrated.

  • http://www.eboy.com doyouwantmore

Meanwhile Kevin Durant is working on his handle and taking jump shots.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

I was happy to see Anthony join the Knicks, I think its great for New York to be back into the playoffs, but realistically, He probably would have been better off going to one of the Texas teams, or staying in Denver..

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

^ or Memphis, or New Orleans, etc., etc.

  • the Dude

Everyone is missing the fact that Melo says he will be staying in NY. We shall see.
I wish there were more players like Pierce in the L and by that I mean loyal to the team that gave them a job playing a GAME they love in the first place.

  • Byebye

Lol melo can lead a team
Don’t ever compare him and labron again
Bron sec best player he ever played with mo Williams or Larry Hughes
Melo had k mart iverson chauncey nene jr smith
That’s way better than d jones pavlavic e snow boobie tired Shaq
Big z gaymison d gooden etc

  • http://thephotoriot.com davidR

the Dude, many players are loyal to their team. the problem is, many owners could give a ufck

  • http://www.theresastatforthat.blogspot.com deron

The Knicks just need time and a couple of key pickups, namely a defensive center and a wing defender. Oh yeah… a new coach.

    http://theresastatforthat.blogspot.com/2011/03/carmelo-what-has-he-done-to-knicks.html

  • BBaller

Maybe the knicks should only start paying him next year! Imagine being paid $15 million for a season and you can openly admit that you cannot deliver this season. I know my boss would not stand for it.

  • BBaller

2 of the most overused statements(excuses) of 10/11 season. “work in process” and ” we need more time”.

  • Justin

Shocking how once again the idiots come out when statements like these are made. He’s 100% right, and I agree with Riggs. Anyone who thought the Knicks were going to contend this year should be smacked upside the head. There was never a chance that this team was going to challenge anyone this year. Teams don’t just magically come together, especially when a bunch of players come and go in the middle of the season like this. Knicks brass knows this and so does anyone who has any clue about sports. Apparently, that’s not a lot of the commentors on this site

  • rik

Dont try to put that on the owners… todays players are acting like divas!

  • Ali

Melo who! Nuggest players actually getting a chance to ball out… These tossed together/win now teams ain’t got a chance in he** in a 7 game seriers vs. a team that has had their nucleous together for years, ala Celts (BIG 4), THUNDERCats (Durant/West-B), La-La Land (KB/FISH/Bynum/Gasol/L.O.), S.A. (Timmy/Manu/T.P.), ChiTown (Rose/Deng/Noah), Mavs (Dirk/Terry/Kidd), Magic (Howard/Nelson) PLAYOFF EXPERIENCE BABY!

  • jimmer

Melo = Score first, score second, score third, & needs the ball in his hands even when he is not scoring. Better off with the harlem globetrotters. This is the second coming of starbury. Not necessarily the same game, but the same team destroying impact. Only player ever not to score easily in D’antoni’s system. They would’ve gotten further just with felt & stat. Feel bad for stat – knew the system, worked his &ss off, now an uber 1-dimensional ball-hoggin tool has taken his shine, turned it into Sh&t and ruined all the hard work. Immense! Can anyone say ‘Shaq to the Suns’?? Great idea at the time and all that…. (I bet D’antoni rules on NBA live dynasty mode, but real life? A 12 year olds approach doesn’t quite cut it)

  • jimmer

^^^ just look at the Heat!

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

What’s the combined record of LeBron, D-Wade, and Bosh versus Carmelo Anthony since they all came out of the 2003 NBA Draft? Anyone? Just wondering.

  • FLIGHT 9

MELO’S MINDSET IS TO OUTSCORE AMARE IN EVERY F**KING GAME… AS IN EVERY GAME FROM PRE-SEASON, ALL STAR, PLAYOFFS, EXHIBITION, OLYMPICS OR CHARITY GAMES!!!! THEY CANNOT WIN THIS YEAR AND CERTAINLY THE SEASON AFTER THIS PERIOD….

  • Anthony

IF MELO PASSES MORE THEY HAVE 5 MO WINS IN THE COLUMN………… rebounding is a skill that isnt taught……… melo and stat have the athleticism to play great d and rebound but its not them……. Stat, melo, Brook Lopez and other skillfull players will never be great rebounders…. defense can be change tho………….. But mike d aint goin nowhere…

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4royOLtvmQ IAMORANGE4EVER

IF the Knicks completely fall in their face the rest of the way, I don’t think you can say it’s a guarantee D’Antoni is back. I wish him the best though, because I want the Knicks to do well, but I’m not gonna be blind to the fact, that D’Antoni might be the wrong coach for Stat, Melo, and Smooth.

  • Darren

who said Pierce is loyal to the Celtics? he demanded a trade around 2005 and only stayed because he didnt want to go to a rebuilding Portland team.
