Donnie Walsh Takes Blame for Knicks’ Struggles

Walsh hopes to relieve his players and the coach of the growing pressure by asking Knicks fans and media to direct their vitriol at him. From the NY Post: “In an attempt to take heat off coach Mike D’Antoni, team president Donnie Walsh said the Knicks’ doldrums since the Carmelo Anthony trade are his fault because he broke up a team in midseason and the dividends may not pay off right away. ‘I take more responsibility than the players or the coaches because I made a monumental trade in the middle of the season, and it appears to me they’re having a hard time getting together, which is understandable,’ Walsh said. ‘That’s why I don’t like to do it in the middle of the season,’ Walsh added. ‘We gave up a lot. We got back a lot. But I do think this trade is going to make us better in the future. In the long run, this trade will make us a better franchise.’ Walsh’s remarks last night echoed Anthony’s comments Sunday that the club may not get on the same page until next season. The Knicks have lost three in a row and are 7-9 since the 13-player Melo blockbuster after last night’s 96-86 loss to the Celtics in which they blew a 15-point second-half lead.”

D’Antoni can always coach the Warriors if his time with the Knicks comes to an end. Just putting that out there.

Walsh saying the right thing because it’s true. Evaluate this team at the end of next year and see where they are. I know that’s a lot to ask the fickle, no patience having fan out there but…

Get the pringle’s man outta there, he is not a real basketball coach. He is a assistant coach at best. And he is as spiteful as a highschool girl who just got “tooted then booted”. Get Jeff Van Gundy back to the knicks ASAP

excuses. when the Heat were losing it was against good teams and they were feasting on the bottom feeders. But apparently Melo and STAT are just not that good. They were so awesome because of Finals MVP Billups and Kid Canada Nash.

I kinda figured when a team hires Mike D’Antoni they’re just happy to be a team that scores a lot of points, makes a lot of highlights, sells a bunch of jerseys but ultimately gets knocked out in the first round. Some teams are cool with that and are happy to mull about in mediocrity (Warriors) but if the Knicks were planning on winning a chip with STAT and Melo then they should probably bring in a guy who will make them play defense.

I thought Dolan ignored D’Antoni and Walsh to force through the Anthony trade? If so Walsh’s words to the media are even more impressive than they appear.

Good thing to come out and say, and its true. They will obviously get better as time goes on, just hope they can mesh by the playoffs. And I’m pretty sure D’Antoni got to the conference finals at least once with this style, I’m not writing him off at all. Carmelo was also pretty good before Billups came to Denver, same as Amare before Nash, even with Marbury dominating the ball.

D’Antoni is not a winner. Conference finals isn’t going to suffice. People pay too much to support this team for a ‘maybe’ conference finals appearance with no defense being played by overpaid “stars”. He’s got to go.

It ain’t Walsh’s fault the team sucks nuts. Blame Nolan and Isiah. D`Antoni is perfect in NYC; his philosophy is easy to follow. Score more points than your opponents and you win.

Im getting tired of D’antoni’s system and his stupid substitutions. GET JERRY SLOAN before the LAKERS or HEAT get their hands on him

@runNgun: Exactly how many times has a coach won a title with ABSOLUTELY NO emphasis on defense? Better yet, how many times has D’Antoni even made it to the finals? That’s easier to answer right off the top of your head: Zero!!! C’mon man let’s be forreal. No D’Antoni team is ever going to win. He needs to be a defensive minded head coaches assistant.

    *coach’s not coaches*

got damnit this faux run’n'gun is pissing me off change ur name man. i dont want people confusing me with you and all of your dumb comments. “D`Antoni is perfect in NYC; his philosophy is easy to follow. Score more points than your opponents and you win.” thats in any game clown. but you have ti stop the other team from scoring more points than u some nights. the knicks would be better off with even Mike “The Grimace” Brown

  • ClydeSays

It could work out, but I don’t see how. D’Antoni was at his best in Phx with players who got out on the break before the defense was set and looked for the open man. I rarely see the Knicks doing that. On paper Melo would seem to be a fit for D’Antoni. Lots of offense, not much D. But Melo is a guy who gets his points of iso & halfcourt play. Those don’t see to be D’Antoni strong points. The Knicks are definitely capable of putting up a ton of points and making the playoffs every year, but the parts seem too different to get them very far in the post season.

    @ZOOM D’Antoni has already won a few.

@219 Don’t hate… the differences between you and me are as simple as apostrophes and the 219. Make it happen, Walsh.

  • bull22

donnie walsh is being to nice. they can win 60 games and still not win a title with mike antonis shoot 150 times but dont play defense, LOL. iam so loving the NY fans shrivel up and make excuses and then go another season without a title, hahahahahhahahahhahahahahahahaha. sayonara suckers!

  • http://slamonline.com zoom

Another bandwagon Bulls fan^^^. Your team will be watching the Finals from the same place our team is.

  • Red Star

Hmm, I wonder why the Nuggets don’t have this problem then?

  • bull22

no brother zoom, not a bandwagon fan. i have been with the bulls through thick and thin and endured the misery of those horrible seasons. but TRUST me you would trade the knicks spot for ours anyday! iam not making predictions but a hardcore defense gives you at a least a shot.. whereas the ny mecca of nothing makes for a good soap opera!

  • Naiym

as a Nuggets fan ..I call this “BULL”…OUR Team “meshed” immediately…Melo ( though I loved him and cheered for him , but was settled with his departure) is like a Cancer, his ball stopping and immaturity when he isn’t the offensive focus is a downer…and it’s catching…because you lose games you shouldn’t. I’m not gonna lie, I felt Melo was playing games with the fans saying one thing and absolutely meaning another! So i was ready for it all to end..and it’s like a veil has been lifted…the difference is immense, and the Nuggets are playing the best ball i’ve seen in my lifetime. It’s going to take “a year” to gel as Melo said, because they need more depth, which Denver took from them… I’m not gonna lie this is like the best fairy tale ending ever to see the shortest temepered fans ever boo thier “messiah”. It would feel good even if Denver weren’t playing so well. But the fact that they are, adds to my joy.
