Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Wants to Work With Dwight Howard

Cap feels like he could teach Dwight a thing or two about playing in the post. From the AJC: “Q: Is there a young center you’d like an opportunity to show a few things to? A: ‘Dwight Howard. I think I could have shown him a few things that would have helped his game a lot. Such an incredible athlete. There are a few blind spots in his game just because he didn’t stay in school long enough to get all of that down, but just really an incredible athlete.”

Dwight is playing really good this year and ofcourse his defense is great but with his size, athleticism, experience and the lack of star Centers in the league I feel like Dwight should average atleast 27/28 points per game.

Then what are you waiting for Kareem. If can teach him the fundamentals of the hook shot dwight will be unfreackingstoppable

  • elmaar

yeah that’d be great anytime a young cat can work out with a hall of famer is invaluable
and later on he should work with hakeem more, he is ace

  • ENDS

YESSSSSS. I hope we still don’t have idiots who think D12 has no offensive game except for the dunk

  • http://slamonline.com Yknot

Might as well since Bynum thinks he’s learned everything you have to offer.

  • greg

dwights footwork has improved like crazy this year. he is getting so many dunks because of it. hes not just using his athleticism to overpower guys, hes making quick moves and sealing them off for the slam, its beautiful. if he can get his hands right he will prolly be the hands down best player in the game

  • Toronto

Patrick Ewing is upset right now. Dwight’s playing the best basketball of his career, and is a serious MVP candidate, all under Ewing’s watch. I mean, the guy’s absolutely DOMINATING the league the past two months, and the only thing keeping him from even better numbers is the coaching philosophy. I think Kareem’s just upset because he was passed over in the Snickers campaign.

  • Anthony

why not .. he cud improve his hook lol ……. SHOW THE WORLD WHY THE NEW SKOOL IS BETTER THAN THE OLD……… do it Dwight!!!

  • rkirby

He should work with javale mcghee…triple doubles every night

  • spit hot fiyah

    make it happen walsh

any teaching he could learn from kareem would be even more valuable then what he has learned from hakeem.. 6 mvps, ball dont lie.. if dwight had the right ppl (kareem) teaching him then he would truly be unstoppable and resemble the centers of old.. ya know, back when the nba actually had real centers…

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

    Do it.

  • All Day

Dwight has worked with Patrick and Hakeem…is Kareem feeling left out? Dwight already has a sky-hook, so there isn’t anything else Kareem can teach Dwight that Patrick and Hakeem haven’t already taught him.

  • bull22

well apparently what Hakeem and Patrick did is not working, since he continues to get in foul trouble alot. so yeah, take up Kareem’s offer now that your team wont be making a long run in this years playoffs..

Dwight has a sky hook? Can you present a video proof?

  • http://google c_cantrell

    ^All Day..
dwight howard does not posess a sky hook lol.. he uses a baby hook every so often but trust me, dwight cannot throw up a sky hook.. thats something that kareem could help him on tremendously.. but i think you might be confused between a baby hook and a sky hook.. check out some kareem highlights on youtube n you will figure it out bro

  • JL

does all day know what sky hook is? there is no player in the league right now that does that shot. incredibly hard shot to master but so hard to block.

  • http://juan.garcia@computershare.com Tina Turner

Of course he’s going to improve the big mans skills. Afetr all he’ll be playing for the Lake Show by then.

  • tRay

I guess those who want DHoward still aren’t satisfied with Bynum smh
    - Sincerely a Devoted Laker Fan

  • http://juan.garcia@computershare.com Tina Turner

Look up at the retired jerseys for the Lakers. Do you visualize one with the last name Bynum up there or one with the last name Howard? I can only picture Howards.

  • All Day

Kareem jumped off one foot as he shot his hook shot. Players today jump off two feet…nobody is going to jump off foot to shoot a hook shot..those days are over. Do you call it a sky hook if you jump off one foot, but you call it a baby hook if you jump off two feet? Kareem invented the shot and he called it a sky hook…a baby hook is still a sky hook fellas.

  • http://google c_cantrell

just watch the two and see the difference for yourself bud.. kareems form is notably different than a modern baby hook.. watch close now, maybe you will learn something

  • All Day

^c_cantrell: Your argument is flawed. Using your analogy, does that mean Ray Allen shoots a jumpshot but Shawn Marion doesn’t, because Ray’s form is different and better than Shawn’s? A jumpshot is a jumpshot and a hook shot is a hook shot. Nice try, dude!

  • http://www.slamonline.com/online/other-ballers/international/2010/03/flight-75-dc-to-moscow/ Mitya

it’s not about the lift, it’s about the arm extenshun

  • http://www.slamonline.com/online/other-ballers/international/2010/03/flight-75-dc-to-moscow/ Mitya

Make some free throws and he will be a 30 point scorer

  • Ali

Ewing, Hakeem, now THE CAPTAIN! What the f*** is going on with Dwight? Seriously…

  • http://google c_cantrell

    ^All Day..
stop trying to make yourself sound smart n just listen to the kind advice i have given you.. if you dont the difference between a sky hook and a baby hook then maybe you should check out a golf site and comment on some of thier sh*t, you would fit right in.. all you have to do is type the the word “Kareem Abdul-Jabbar” in the youtube search box and i promise you will soon find out what a sky hook is.. but your probably to busy eating playing video games and chattin to babes on the internet tellin them your a body builder when your really 5’6″ and 270 lbs.. get a life b*tch.. P.S. when someone kindly tries to explain something to you in a nice way (and not trying to make you look like the dumbass that you really are), then just keep your smartass mouth shut and if not then you can go back to sittin at your little table with your crayons and coloring book and be a good little boy while the grown ups talk about basketball

  • tomtom

Cantrel is right by the way, Dhoward quite clearly has NO sky hook and to argue that he does is pretty dumb. I dont think there is anyone who wouldn’t benefit from a lesson or two from former players, if players dont compliment there athleticism with fundamental skills they can never fullfil there potential.

  • mugiwara

sky hook is different to a baby hook, however you need to play at least 40 years in the nba to perfect it.

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

What c_cantrell said. Cmon All Day, it’s pretty obvious dude. Sky hooks are off of one foot, begin lower than a baby hook, swing wide and out, then finish going up. Baby hooks start much higher, the body is squared up more, and the arm extension is more out than up. Do you also believe that Hedo Turkoglu is able to complete the East Bay Funk Dunk?

  • nibblicious

All Day: I challenge you to accurately describe/define the difference between Sky and Baby hook. That is your homework assignment, you get one week. If you cannot ID the difference(s), you fail, and you stay off this subject/site. Let’s call this a collaboratively productive discussion. In all seriousness, I want to know your detailed opinion, not just “they’re the same”. You know they’re different (and the differences have not all been ID’d, not even close). So challenge yourself. If you want to do it offline, throw out an email address…

  • nibblicious

    All Day
p.s. most of your detractors here are what they say you are: namecallers, self proclaimed experts, etc…kinda playground really.

I come here for real Bball.
    your move…

  • nibblicious

caboose: serious props for naming the flow…
in the end, it’s trusting yourself, a full body fluid motion release, not just a chuck it up move.
that said, it’s more, much more…

  • Shem

Lol @ anyone that thinks dwight has a sky hook. I haven’t seen a sky hook used in a game in probably 10-15 years.. anyone know of any players after Kareem that used it?

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

I was thinking Kareem was interested in filming a re-release of the film FLYING HIGH with Dwight for the modern generation.

  • knickzvet82

I think I remember Parish using some sort of skyhook

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Kareem didn’t invent the hook shot… He tweaked it and perfect his version, the sky hook, but the hook shot itself has been around I’m guessing before the NBA even became a league. The sky and baby and jump hooks are all hook shots, but they aren’t the same type of hook shot. Just as a turn-around fade-away isn’t the same as a spot-up jumper.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Not sure why we’re discussing this though.
BTW Dwight Howard is pretty f*cking good this season, on BOTH ends of floor.

  • greg

sabonis could do it. but do any of you really want to see dwight do a sky hook at this point in his career? there is nobody who can stop his quick spins and drop steps, it is beautiful to watch. i think he has enough finnese moves to get him by but that power and speed game is unstoppable. boston couldnt stop him L.A Cant stop him.

  • All Day

@c_cantrell: Why are you upset? Did I hurt your feelings? You called me a b*tch, but you responded just like one…an immature one at that. LOL!!!

  • All Day

If anyone see the Magic play the Knicks tonight? Do you still think Dwight doesn’t have a sky hook?

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Shawn Bradley had a mean sky hook.

  • http://philosopher.view@blogspot.com The Philosopher

Magic had the “junior sky hook”. And it was effective. Hit game winners and all with it.
Kareem’s sky hook is the most devestating offensive weapon in the history of team sports. It takes a very long time to perfect. More time than Dwight Howard has left in his playing career. But Kareem can teach Howard alot more than just a shot. Kareem has more wisdom than a little bit. He can be a bit of an ass, though…
One reason that more people do not learn the shot is, because that is known as Kareem’s shot. Players have a hard time with that. They don’t want to be seen as “copying” Kareem.

  • Justin

The only reason they called Magic’s “junior sky hook” was because he was smaller than Kareem. Magic was the only one I can think of that actually used the sky hook like Kareem did. And yes, anyone who thinks baby hook and sky hook are the same just doesn’t know what they are talking about. And why would you think Kareem feels left out? He was asked who he’d like to work with and he gave an answer. He didn’t come out and say “I want to work with Dwight Howard”. I forgot though, people on here forget that players are actually answering questions from reporters and not just coming out and saying these things on their own. SLAM does like to make it sound like they players are just speaking out so the muppets on here can respond negatively like they do.

  • http://msn.com LA West 44

I don’t know what the arguement is about sky hook vs. baby hook, two feet vs. one. The fact of the matter is that Kareem DOMINATED with that shot for over 20 years. I suspect that if he was still playing he WOULD still be schooling people. The man trained with Bruce Lee and was an incredible athlete himself. No less an expert than Kevin McHale said that Kareem had great balance, because shooting off of one leg consistently is not as easy as he made it look

  • http://google c_cantrell

    ^All day..
dude just give up.. you have lost

  • http://google c_cantrell

i figure your probably talking about me when you say those who are self proclaimed experts and who call names.. i dont call myself an expert, i just know what i know.. and as far as the name calling goes, i just have a really short patience tolerance for those who get here n act like everything they say is gospel when they have no idea what they are talking about.. its a mockery to us who do know and understand the great game of basketball.. that said, if i have offended anyone (and i know i have) then i sincerely apologize, but im not goin to say it wont happen again because i am almost certain that it will..
P.S.–nice to know that there are some ppl on this site who truly understand baktball

  • http://www.postoffense.com Joe Odhiambo

Jump hook shot is a defendable shot, and it does not give a true center any advantage over the defensive player. Dwight Howard needs to learn how to shoot a true hook shot, however, there is nobody in basketball who really understands the shot. If there was, it would still be around because it is the most lethal shot in the paint. Alley hoop, dunking and occasional jumpers are great, but when it comes to push-and-shove, a post player must have a go to move to make a difference in the game. Dwight Howard has nothing and until he can develop that, he will always be cast as a supporting actor. I have studied post offense and understand every aspect individual post offense inside out. In fact, I can shoot the sky hook with either as well as the master, my study subject, Mr. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Don’t just take my work, watch me shoot the hook shot in practice under molangaaliru going for 10 straight using both right and let hand. It is that simple if you understand the shot.
