Kevin Love the New Double-Double King

Love gutted it out through a knee injury and set a new modern NBA record for most consecutive double-doubles (an incredible 52). From the Pioneer Press: “Love woke up Wednesday morning in discomfort and spent the entire day thinking there was no way he would be able to play. He even had a conversation with reserve forward Anthony Tolliver to prepare him for an assignment change. ‘I told A.T. to be ready tonight,’ Love said. ‘He told me, ‘I’m always ready.’ I said, ‘Be ready to start.’ Tolliver’s role off the bench didn’t change, and Love didn’t let down his team or the crowd of 15,153 that gathered in Target Center hoping to see a semblance of NBA history. Shaking off stiffness in his knee, Love solidified his place among some of the NBA’s legendary big men with 6:51 left in the second quarter, sinking a free throw to give him 10 points and 11 rebounds and his 52nd consecutive double-double (points-rebounds) during the Wolves’ 101-75 victory. The free throw came after Love drew a foul on one of his four offensive rebounds.”

Saw Kevin in Philly Friday night, and he was struggling a little bit even then. Still went for 21 and 23. Anyone who’s paying attention has to be impressed by what this kid is doing.

@Ryan Exactly. People gotta remember that he’s not putting up 10 and 10. It’s more like 20 and 20. And why is nobody talking about the kids age? He’s a BABY!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Zog

He is going to be an mvp in two years

  • reald1

need 2oo+ more to catch wilt for the all time nba streak

Can people stop saying this guy is overrated now? He’s done more than enough to prove himself.

moses malone keeps getting his records broken, first kobe now this

  • T-Money

This is extremely impressive but what is this modern day NBA record BS? Wilt is the double-double king until someone else gets more double-doubles in a row than he did. What is the cut off mark for “modern”? Are we going to invalidate his 100-point game too and say Kobe scored the most points in a single game in the modern era?

  • Krisjanis

    @T-Money
Kobe has scored most points in a game that you have a chance to see. I mean, no one outside the arena couldn’t see the Wilts game, but you can check Kobe’s 81 on youtube, so he kinda scored the most ponits in a single game in the modern era

  • T-Money

Krisjanis: you kinda missed my point, it’s okay.

  • grenners

Modern era started after the NBA / ABA merger.

  • J.C.

Daamn, already at 11 rebounds only 17 minutes into the game?
Good to see they won this one.

  • Red Star

Congrats K Love! 52 DD’s is not an easy feat. T-Money has a very valid point and I agree 100% though!

Yeah, no sane person is putting Kevin in Wilt’s category. Statistically, Wilt is his own damn category.
What’s undeniable is that Love has now done something that no NBA player has matched in 35 years.

  • K.a.

Double figure rebound by halftime on a bad knee?!!

Bargnani needs to take some lessons from Love. Both are big men who can hit 3′s, but only 1 of them care to catch the rebounds.

Gotta give him love for this. It is quite a feat to essentially never have an off-night. Whoever said he’s going to be MVP, that’s overly optimistic but Love will be a solid star for years to come.

Comparing Wilts stats to Loves is like comparing A-Rod to Brady. The game is completely different now. Shot clock, 3 point shot, … THe game used to be a big mans game, inside first then outside. Now its an outside first game. There ie a reason that almost all rebounding records occured in the 60′s and 70′s, the 3 point shot came into the league in 79.

separate wilt’s records from the current nba era sheesh
the game was soooooooooooooooo much different

So I’ve never actually seen Kevin Love play a single game. How does he do what he does? If he’s doing it so consistently, why can’t others? Is he just out working everyone? Is he athletic?

  • http://Www.slamonline.com TheBigL

Double digit boards before HT is good, no doubt. But you gotta remember how poorly guys were shooting. It’s almost like not getting 10 boards woulda been more impressive…

  • http://bedotwater.bandcamp.com BE.water

Wilt had 276 consecutive Double Doubles.

  • horsey

if an 8 footer with athleticism and bulk shows up we might see someone do something with Wilt’s records. he was just in a different league…

  • http://www.slamonline.com/online/category/blogs/farmer-jones/ Ryan Jones

Garrett: He’s a smart kid and the son of a former NBA player who taught him fundamentals from day one, specifically how to get the most out of his skill set. He’s also pretty much built to box guys out. That, and like very few guys (Rodman, Wallace, etc) he WANTS to rebound. He’s trying to get every miss on both ends. That’s just not most guys’ mentality. Put it all together and you get a guy who averages 15 or 16 a night.

And no, he’s not athletic by NBA standards. I’ll assume you were joking about that.

hes not really that athletic at all.. but he is hella strong.. he can throw a chest pass from under the goal and hit the rim on the other side of the court.. so this dude has some amazing upper body strength, and also he plays much like rodman did at times.. by that i mean he will often not help on d, and box out the nearest opponent in hopes of getting the board tho he knows the opponent has a good chance of making the shot and that he could have helped on d and ended the chance of him gettin the shot off at all.. so he kinda works to pad his stats.. but still, a record is a record.. congrats KLove
