Kobe Bryant: 6th Greatest Scorer in NBA History

Bean passed Moses Malone on the career scoring list last night, and has his eyes set on none other than Shaquille O’Neal (who’s 5th on the all-time list). From the AP: “The Lakers 13-time All-Star, entered Tuesday night’s game against the Atlanta Hawks 12 points from matching Malone’s 27,409 points. Bryant passed Malone when he made three free throws with 2:05 remaining in the first half. He had 15 points in the first half. Bryant has been shooting up the scoring list this season. He passed Malone one week after moving past Elvin Hayes for seventh. He also has topped the scoring totals of Hakeem Olajuwon, Oscar Robertson, Dominique Wilkins and John Havlicek this season.”

He started the season 14th, now he’s 6th… And he’ll probably have Miami fans at the arena in time for the tip-off on Thursday night.
That’s what you call greatness right there.

I wonder how high Allen Iverson would have been on this list if he did not have the attitude problems he has.

  • James

    cosign bryan crawford

“You’re simply the best… better than all the rest!…”

They say there will never be another MJ but there will definitely never be another Kobe Bryant. He’s still the best if you ask me.

Yeah, but he’s a selfish ballhog and he chucks and he did it with shaq and pau and he cheated on his wife and he isn’t MJ and not even the best player in the league and look at his field goal percentage and he’s old and declining and pretty soon won’t be able to compete andhe played too hard in the All-Star game and he is uncoachable and doesn’t trust his team…Did I get everything covered? Can this comment section be closed now?

Kobe will probably pass jordan on the list and thats about it. Nobody is getting close to Kareem.

  • Peter

    @Art of Deception

Even if he did pass Michael Jordan, MJ would still have scored more than he did in fewer seasons, and his rebouns/assists/steals numbers are also higher than Kobes will ever be. Kobe is good, but dont compare the two :P

Kobe will finish 4th all time, and then he will retire.

  • kobesbestfriend

he should start doing those commercials with the mailman and kareem “cuz that all time scoring record is oh so close!!!”

  • http://slamonline.com SG

Kobe can easily get another 5000 points in about three years because he is only 32. He will definitely pass MJ baring injury.

  • http://www.yahoo.com The Fury

    ^^^Most definitely so

Umm, if you didn’t catch the sarcasm in my first post, then I really don’t know what to tell you.

Am I the only LA fan tired of the Post Up becoming the Heat Fan Club comment section?

  • http://nba.com gp23

In case anyone was curious… Kobe would have to average 33.0 ppg for the next 4 seasons to pass Kareem. He would also have to play in all 82 games in them 4 seasons. Your welcome.

  • http://nba.com EJ

Kobe will play more than 4 seasons. And if LA gets Mike D’Antoni, he can do it.

  • JTaylor21

I can already see that this section is swarming with male groupies starting with superiorhead himself, so….

  • SI44

I dont think KB will pass Kareem, he def has a good shot of getting to 2nd tho. Only thing is when he cant be the alpha dog anymore he’s gonna hang it up, and I respect that. Still at least 3 yrs away tho imo.

  • dsleepy

so how many is he trailing shaq by?

  • http://simonlawy888.blogspot.com Simon Lawy

@dsleepy, around a thousand point ~ Piece of cake for him

damn…Kobe is a beast. Respect, one of the game’s all time greatest players. People should appreciate these next few seasons of Kobe’s, because hes only going to decline. He has worked very hard to get here, and it’s looking more and more that come June, he will be celebrating championship number 6. Not a Laker fan, but Kobe is the man, much respect.

  • Igor

    well deserved Kobe!

  • http://www.realgm.com Gman

I think Kobe really wants to pass Shaq as the final “ha ha u suck”… lol

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Anyone wanna talk about Kobe Bryants assault on the Shot Attempts record. He’s gonna Brett Favre a lot of records

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

Respect to the Legend. There is no way that you can’t call Kobe Bryant a legend

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=j-JgAOrAQDc Nicolas Fleming

Of course it’s a longevity award, but you don’t get up there w/o being a beast. And you have to shoot a lot to score a lot. C’mon nbk you are smarter than this.

  • Nicky8163

Kobe will eventually get up those ladders..luv to see him do that..MJ is the best in his time bt Kobe is the best this time nd there will b another superstar after Kobe…so i think they all deserve to b recognised…Go Lakers..

  • Art of Deception

@peter i wasn’t comparing kobe to jordan. Read my comment again. I’m just saying he’ll likely end up in 3rd place on the scoring list.

But if you want me to compare the two, MJ career stats (w/bulls): 31.5 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 5.4 asts, 2.5 stls and 50.5 FG%. Kobe career stats (starter for lakers) 27.4 pts, 5.7 rpg, 5.1 asts, 1.6 stls and 45.7 FG%. MJ wins. kobe’s durability is phenomenal but its not enough for him to be considered better than MJ.

  • http://hibachisabas.blogspot.com/ Toni Kukoc

    one word: LeBron

  • TheNightWatch*8*

    Congrats Kobe

  • mustard

durant might average 30ppg over the next decade plus and end up closer to kareem than anybody…

  • Mike From Spain

If Kobe plays let’s say 20% less minutes with the same output per minute on court, for the next three seasons, and taking his 1900 – 2000 points per season from 2009 – 2010 as the measure, and taking into account the 300 points still to be scored this season, he’d be putting about 4500 – 5000 points more (total of about 32,000) by the time he’s 35. Then if he plays one or two seasons more with a bit of decline in his game (let’s say 20% further overall decline, be it in playing time or in effectiveness), then he’d put in about 1000 to 2000 points more, so I think surpassing total points by MJ is possible. I don’t know about catching Karl Malone though… Kobe will retire third in scoring all time, not too shabby. But Lebron will take his place I guess.
