Mike D’Antoni: Carmelo Could Average Close to Triple Double

The lone triple double of Carmelo Anthony’s NBA career came against Mike D’Antoni’s Phoenix Suns, and the Knicks’ current coach believes his new star can put up those kinds of numbers every night. From the NY Daily News: “Mike D’Antoni believes that Carmelo Anthony should be ‘knocking on that door’ of posting a triple double every night and admitted that the offense should run through the All-Star forward. Anthony had what D’Antoni considered his best all-around game since joining the Knicks when he had 39 points, 10 rebounds and two assists in Monday’s overtime win against Orlando. ‘Yeah, I thought he got after it and rebounded well,’ D’Antoni said Wednesday. ‘He should nightly be getting close to a triple double. The ball should be going through him a lot, and he should be knocking on that door.’ Anthony doesn’t really have the makeup of a triple-double guy. Instead, he’s the quintessential go-to-scorer. He is averaging 25.3 points, 7.2 rebounds and 2.9 assists in 70 games this season with Denver and the Knicks.”

Melo averaging 10 assists? That’s something I thought I’d never hear.

Thanks Pringle Man.I watched the game last night, I couldn’t believe the lack of effort on D with the Knicks. Like guys not stepping in the paint to take a charge or even put a hand up.

One of the funnier one-liners D’Antoni has come up with.

if he tried to get 10 assists a game, he’d probably end up with 10 turnovers a game.
which i guess would still be a triple double…
    d’antoni’s on to something.

    The lies

  • MikeC.

I could see it if they count turnovers.

My eyes don’t deceive me, Melo is playing possessed like Kobe.

And Danillo Gallinari is the best 3-point shooter of all time…

  • Riggs

    fire d’antoni.

  • D-Block

    Double double maybe…

  • goattree

    cosign airs.

The closest Melo will get to averaging a triple double will be with points, boards and turnovers

Melo still has to average 10 rebounds first.

hes trying to get melo to apss the ball more

  • Jono

He’s never averaging more than 9.5 rebs and 4 assists. NEVER.

  • kev

Never ever going to come remotely close to happening. When is the last time melo even got a triple double?

  • Keith Bogans

well we know it won’t be in blocks or steals..

  • http://staticseth.blogspot.com Seth

Two assists, yeah, that’s pretty close to ten.

It’s just a motivational thing, that’s why he has said that. He doesnt even need to average more assits, just move the ball better than he does.

  • robb

shut up pringles man get him to play some defense instead. Oh wait! you don’t know how, do you?

  • http://dude Chukaz

I think he can come “closer” than LeBron in the sense that he’s more likely to average double digits in two areas (points n boards). I also think that if the nba starts tracking numbers such as passing, Melo could come close to getting double digit passes. It might be a stretch tho, since passing the ball that much would really negatively impact the number of times he pump fakes and jabs, not to mention the number of times he holds the ball for longer than 20 seconds…

  • Hugh Jass

I thought you had to pass the ball to get assists?

  • http://dude Chukaz

@Hugh, yeah bro but you don’t get an assist for every pass. I think carmolo averages less than 10 passes per game

  • Yep

hahahah @Chukaz.. then they start countin pump fakes and boy will easily have a triple double
