Pearl Monroe: Carmelo Can Wear No. 15

The number 15 jersey has been retired for 25 years, but Carmelo, after his Knicks debut last week, asked Earl Monroe about dusting off the No. 15. From the NY Post: “Monroe’s 15 was retired in 1986 and again for Dick McGuire in 1992. McGuire passed away last year. ‘He talked to me on the podium after the press conference and I told him I’m fine with it but he’d have to ask the McGuires,’ Monroe told The Post. ‘Fifteen, it’s just a number to me. I’d be honored if he wore it.’ Anthony just missed the March 1 deadline to apply for a new jersey number for next season. ‘I wish I can take it back down,’ Anthony said. ‘Talking to Earl, I don’t know what I’ve got to go through to get it. I’ll wear it in his honor.’”

wow thats almost kinda disrespectful.. c’mon melo, show alil more class than that.. its just a number dude, you can find another one

  • Sonicproof

He could wear 12. It’s kinda like 15 but backwards or something.

  • 2KInsider

He should wear #6 in honor of Michael Jordan.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

    What’s wrong with 7?

  • http://www.twitter.com/jtrain73 Jono

if there;s a number that represents b*tch, he should wear it.

  • http://Slamonline.com Rocksinmypants

Yeah that does sound a lil self-centered.
I could understand if Monroe came out and said dude could wear it but Anthony was the one who asked him.
    I mean, come on.
Did Shaq ask Magic Johnson to wear #32 in LA?
Did Garnett ask Bill Sharman if he could wear #21 in Boston?
Did LeBron aak Pat Riley to unretire #23 from a player who never even donned a Heat uniform?
If D. Rose even asked Michael Jordan in his DREAMS to wear #23 in Chicago, he would wake up and apologize.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

^Whoa, that was me. Not “Rockinmypants” or whatever.

  • Omar

Since I already paid for my #7 jersey, I’m going to kick his ass if he starts wearing #15 in the next couple of seasons.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

wtf, just wear number 7! TWO Knick players have had their #15 retired, and he’s just going to ignore that? I understand that it’s his favorite number, but you have to respect the past Knick greats.
When you ask Earl, what’s he supposed to say? No? How’ll that make him look? To even put the Pearl on the spot like that is kind of inconsiderate.

  • Da Holy Karron

if he was told by him its koo then its koo and he showing respect to a ny great

  • MikeC.

Looks like I’m not buying a Melo #7 any time soon.

  • 2KInsider

Melo should have worked out the number issue during trade negotiations.

  • Riggs

how is this disrespectful if he asked? what kinda retarded logic is that?

  • JTaylor21

Enigmatic, rockinmypants? Come on son, get your mind out of the gutter.

  • X

def. not disrespectful if Monroe and the McGuire’s cosign, do you Melo

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Almost as retarded as having to ask about my logic, Riggs. Whining about not being able to wear #15 when TWO Knick players have already had the number retired is disrespectful. And obviously he HAS to ask, fool. They aren’t going to let him wear it UNLESS he gets the co-sign from Monroe and McGuire.
And since when do you even like the Knicks? LOL.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Maybe you were talking to cantrell and not me. NVM if that was the case, but we were saying pretty much the same thing.

  • BostonBaller

I could care less what number he wears and the disrespect portion is in the air but I do think it kinda sucks to ask b/c as T the Bear said “Monroe would look like a jerk in some peoples eyes if he said no so he pretty much had to say yes. Now the family is going to be put on the spot when asked. Having a fav # is one thing but if you make millions you can forgo your fav # b/c 99% of your other favorite things can be bought. lol. A lucky number on the other hand is just plain dumb b/c if you are good you don’t need luck. yawn..

  • youngmuggsy

Why are American athletes so obsessed what number they wear on their shirts? It’s just there to distinguish between players for score-keeping and foul tracking, nothing more.

  • MikeC.

I don’t think numbers should ever be worn again once they’re retired. Unless the same guy comes back like Jordan with the Bulls. Once a number goes up to the rafters, it should stay there. It was retired to honor the contributions that a particular player made to the organization. It assures that player’s immortality with the fans and the team. It should never even come up as an option to have the number worn again. I don’t want to see anyone wearing Ewing’s 33 just because they’re the new star in town.

  • Hanoon

and he’s the one calling bosh a punk….

  • http://klatschendom.wordpress.com/ speedy

Carmelo lives is in his own world and we can be happy to see him living it up.
He crowns himself king of NY before wining something.

  • dahon

he should wear 51…same numbers. cmon Melo..its not a video game. work on your game numbers.

good thing i waited on my 7 jersey say noise

  • Samacuse

    @ 2Kinsider-
Whats your logic behind Melo wearing #6 “to honor MJ”? Michael Jordan wore 23, 45, and (for one game) 12, in the NBA. He wore #9 for the Olympic team. Please explain…

  • ciroqobama

@Samacuse- What 2Kinsider was doing was taking a jab at LeBron. Try and keep up next time.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/online/nba/2011/03/pearl-monroe-carmelo-can-wear-no-15/ Boss

WTF I bought a #7 jersey, ripped of the tag today, i knew he’d switch it up, anyone else going to get owned?

  • youngmuggsy

How is retiring a players number paying tribute to them? I couldn’t care less what number Jordan wore on his back. If I see simply his name hanging in the rafters I know it’s in his honour, no need to go through the silly ritual of stopping other player from wearing his number.

  • AC

I understand retiring numbers but I also like the way we do things in Europe :-D For example here are some of the past wearers of the Manchester United #7: George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo. All greats. It’s a cool tradition.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/online/category/blogs/san-dova-speak-easy/ San Dova

I don’t really see the disrespect. “Ask and you shall receive”…an answer.

  • FoCo

Clearly disrespectful. He is asking for something that has been made unavailable to honor another person (two people actually).
To make a completely unrelated analogy how would you like it if some guy came up to your girlfriend while you are on a date and asks her out?

  • FoCo

make that *admittedly unrelated and not completely unrelated

  • Fat Lever

Cmon guys, Melo’s not asking, LaLa is. Melo is just a puppet that LaLa controls.

  • http://nicekicks.com meloman2.0

this melo hate is gettting out of hand… he didnt do anything wrong

  • FoCo

maybe this will all be an episode for the LaLa show. Melo and LaLa will have to search the bronx for some breast milk to trade for the number or Isiah will shut down the team

  • Fat Lever

FoCo, it better be the breastmilk from a Cambodian immigrant.

  • http://bedotwater.bandcamp.com BE.water

how is it disrespectful? He ASKED. He DIDNT Demand.

  • Jalepino Sauce Age

    …or a bored eskimo housewife :-)

  • http://carter15 posterboy

Melo dat dude in all but it ain that serious brohem, let it go, and I believe Vince Carter made that number more famous for what its worth anyway….

  • Turk

When I join the celts after years of being in a small market team and crying my way out I`m wearing #33, I don`t think Larry would mind.

  • Sonicproof

What is the coolest number to wear anyways?

  • DeeDre

@ Samacuse -Jordan won 6 championships. He was just being sarcastic

  • http://slamonline.com Ugh

Another stupid made up manufactured fake phony meaningless pseudo controversy about nothing, just so a bunch of wackadoos can get there nut off by talking trash about how horrible they think Carmelo Anthony is.
I don’t think he should wear #15, with the Knicks, but seriously, this is NON-issue and an even bigger NON-story. If the Pearl is cool with it, the bunch of fans and nobodies on this site have NO RIGHT to even have an opinion on the matter. For those bothered and upset, get a damn life!
