Post Up: Thunder Knockout Heat

OKC takes down Miami; Celts get back on track.

by Adam Figman | @afigman

Denver 102, Atlanta 87

Another strong win for the Nugs. This makes them 9-2 since the Melo trade, which, given that they were losing the dude anyway, means it was officially a damn good trade for Denver. Nene dropped a game-high 20, while Zaza Pachulia led the Hawks with 19. Also: The Hawks’ ability to switch back and forth from really great to freakin’ terrible on a night-to-night basis is confusing as hell. They oughta let fans know which mode they’ll be in during pre-game warmups or something.

Detroit 107, Toronto 93

Someone must’ve told formerly (seemingly) disgruntled pals Richard Hamilton and Tayshaun Prince to un-disgruntle, because they were pretty enthusiastic last night, combing for 46 points and leading the Pistons to a win over the lowly Raptors. Greg Monroe added 21 and 10, while Andrea Bargnani (20 points) and the Raps shot 50 percent from the field in the loss.

Boston 92, Indiana 80

Following a few rough losses, the Celts desperately needed a victory, and they picked one up at home against the cold-shooting Pacers. Jeff Green continues to acclimate to his new environment, as he put in 19 (13 in the second quarter), while Paul Pierce dropped the game high of 20. The top of the East is a Chicago-Boston tie once again.

Orlando 93, Milwaukee 89

Beyond Dwight Howard’s beastly 31 and 22 effort, the Magic did little right, but they pulled enough good fortune to grab the win in overtime (yeah, a 93-89 game that included an OT session) and earned Orlando an official spot in the Playoffs. Brandon Jennings scored 23 for Milwaukee, a team that’s simply not playing with the edge it needs to make a postseason push. Unfortunate. The Magic are back in Orlando tomorrow night to take on the Nuggets.

New Orleans 100, Phoenix 95

Steve Nash (8 points, 10 dimes) finally returned, but the Suns fell anyway, losing to a Hornets squad led by Chris Paul and his 26 points. It’ll be interesting to see if CP3 takes that shoot-first mentality into the Playoffs, and if he does, if they can avoid the first-round L they seem to be slowly heading towards. All-around good dude Jared Dudley led Phoenix with 25.

Oklahoma City 96, Miami 85

The Heat had the night’s (and maybe the year’s?) best highlight, but the Thunder got the W, holding Miami down late in the fourth with some solid defense. Kevin Durant scored 29, but keeping the Heat to 85 points off just 38.5 percent shooting was ultimately the X factor. (It turns out, no, you can’t use the term “X factor” without sounding insanely corny.) OKC’s new interior blend of strength (Kendrick Perkins) and length (Serge Ibaka) seems like it may evolve the team into a true contender, one that the Lakers will want no part of this May. And for Miami, well, now everybody knows how to beat them: Don’t let ‘em hit shots or get easy baskets, specifically late in the game. Easy enough?

Houston 94, Charlotte 78

The Rockets, now two and half games out of eighth out West, might have one last Playoff push left in them, and they’ll need to hurry up and make it if they want to challenge the Grizzlies’ spot. They breezed by the Bobcats, getting 21 from Kevin Martin and 19 from Chase Budinger. The W gives the Rockets two in a row, though tomorrow’s matchup with Boston might be a little more difficult.

Utah 119, Minnesota 104

CJ Miles went absolutely wild last night, dropping a 40 spot and leading the Jazz right through the TWolves at home. Al Jefferson also went for 26 and 11, as Utah shot 54.8 percent as a team during the victory. Kevin Love, perhaps gearing up for another monster double-double streak, scored 22 and grabbed 11.

Cleveland 97, Sacramento 93

Marcus Thornton’s scoring run continued, as he put in the game-high 23, but Sacto still fell to the Cavs in what was a battle between crews that’ll most likely be vying for that No. 1 lottery spot this June. So I guess this road W might do more harm than good, but some winning experience for some young guys never hurts much. Ramon Sessions dropped 20 for Cleveland.

Dallas 112, Golden State 106

The Warriors hopped out to a red-hot start, but the Mavs fought their way back down from 18, eventually jumping ahead and snatching the win in the fourth quarter. Dirk Nowitzki provided a 34 and 18 effort, while Rodrique Beaubois‘ importance continues to swell, as he scored 18 and provided vital energy. Dallas will host the Spurs tomorrow night in what should be a good one.

Philadelphia 104, L.A. Clippers 94

The Sixers keep showing and proving their worth as a Playoff-ready squad, this time taking down the Clips in L.A. and moving alongside the Knicks for the sixth spot in the East. Elton Brand went for 19 and 12 (plus 5 blocks), while Jrue Holiday led Philly with 20.

Last Call: Dwyane Wade does something terrible to Kendrick Perkins:

And if you believe Ira Winderman, this has nothing to do with the hand. He puts up shots 3 hours before every game and it’s all net. It’s clearly mental. My guess: he has no idea how to get loose when playing limited minutes and taking a limited number of shots. In a way, JJ and E. House are mose used to that role: coming into the game cold and just gunning until their next shift. He was signed with the idea of playing him 30+ minutes next to Bron and Wade. It’s not happening and he’s having issues adjusting to 15 mins a game.

  • MUBWAR

unimpressed with King James yesterday. He was too lazy on D, coming off screens to slowly and played with absolutely no effort.Wade and Bosh were nice. Didn’t Miller shoot 49% from deep last year. what’s up with him?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nick Tha Quick

It always funny how refs let Dwade get away with his tantrums on the court every single time, he drives and misses and thinks there was contact. And for the record, Kobe and some of the C’s get away with it too but none more than Dwade. If this was Dwight complaining about a missed call, berating the ref each time, he would have been tossed a long time ago.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

With Miller, I think it has been mental since his first game back.
Allen, who is on this list? Durant has only had one real good game against Bron (last night). If his jumper isn’t falling, and he often goes stretches missing consecutive long jumpers, then he can’t do much against Bron.

  • http://slamonline.com SG

Anyone think the crowd chanting MVP for Wade is getting to Bron? Its been going on for a few home games now. @Eboy…Is Wade viewed as the MVP and best player for Heat by the fans in Miami?

  • All Day

^ Nick Tha Quick, I’ve noticed a trend with the star players whining about calls. To be fair to Dwight, he gets fouled alot…but I do think he is the biggest cry baby when it comes to complaining about calls…maybe that’s something he learned from SVG.

  • All Day

When a player thinks he’s been fouled, why does he raises both hands and looks around waiting to hear a whistle while the other players on the court continue to play?

  • Scott

Why doesn’t LeBron shoot midrange jumpers off picks? Does he not realize that’s allowed? That made me laugh out loud. I was thinking the same thing last nite.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    T-Money
    The list is small.
Right now it’s Melo and Durant.
Honestly, LeBron needs to look at how Artest plays Durant. He bodies up, forces him to drive and finish and is constantly swiping at the ball to prevent him from getting a rhythm.
As I was watching Bron I was thinking that since Bron doesn’t reach because he doesn’t want fouls he couldn’t agitate Durant, which let him get a rhythm. Plus, LeBron was just blase the entire game.
But, it wasn’t just about the Heat. Perkins is a beast and he makes the game so much easier for Ibaka.

I normally attribute a certain level of hyperbole to EBoy’s comments. However, his rants about Spoelstra’s coaching ability are looking especially valid, with last night’s game being exhibit A. He seems to have a loose grasp on many aspects of coaching, including player rotation. At some point in the playoffs, this is going to cost Miami a game (or a series).

  • http://www.boogiewilliams.com Boing Dynasty

Wade just solidified back-to-back plays of the year. @AP did u catch Wade passing it out of the paint to Miller for a wide open brick, then they go to a TV time out & in slow motion Miller reaches out for dap and Wade has that “Yeah, whatever m0therf*cker” look all over his face.

  • http://www.boogiewilliams.com Boing Dynasty

& that iso, Dunrant on Lebron to end the half where he shoulder fakes LBJ right, and goes left and wets it from 25…filthy

  • http://www.slamonline.com KulchaKris

My opinion of DWade as a player is slowly changing as well. I don’t know if he’s changed, or maybe I’m just paying more attention to him now. His “the world is a better place now” comment reeks of self-pity, and mental softness. His behavior on the court seems different as well. Defensive lapses, more complaining, etc. Pretty sad development for a guy who’s one of my top 5 favorite players.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Or maybe Spoelstra understands the concept of confidence from consistency. Its hard to be confident on the court, especially in the playoffs, if you have no idea when you’ll be on the court, about how long that might be, or if you’ll get taken out at any moment. I think Spo is not necessarily wrong for sticking with his rotation even if it seems to cost Miami a couple games. Miller is important for the playoffs, you don’t want him losing his head completely before they even start. – BUT i don’t understand the lack of Erick Dampier, he is the best option they got, there’s no reason he doesn’t play now, and he surely will play in the postseason.

  • http://www.slamonline.com KulchaKris

@Nbk I would say that Miller has already lost his head, no? If he can’t gain his confidence now, it’s unlikely to happen during the playoff pressure cooker. As for Dampier, your guess is as good as mine there.

  • Showtime

That dunk by wade officially gave me a man crush lol..it was insane but okc is for real if that front court cant continue to come together and old man harden continue to ball off the bench it gonna be problems in the west. But the team that wanted more won it simple. & newyork is not in the 6 spot come playoffs. Doug have the kids coming together @ the right time

  • paul

The Trade turns the Celtics from probablies into maybes, and the Thunder from not likelies into possibly so’s.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

He’s shooting 38% from 3. You guys are overreacting getting upset about 38% that is still better then 80% of the NBA. smh, he just isn’t doing what he did last year when he had one of the best shooting seasons in NBA history. 38% is still top 50 in the league

  • T-Money

SG: Bron’s been getting it too. You’re reaching, homie. :)

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Nah, the Thunder still can’t beat L.A. or Dallas in a series. Maybe they can beat the Spurs, and I know my thinkg that pisses Spurs fans off.
They don’t get enough easy buckets to beat Dallas or L.A., and they won’t overwhelm those teams on the glass.
However, they might be able to overwhelm the Spurs on the glass.
Spoelstra doesn’t play Dampier in the second half. It’s like a rule or something.
I didn’t see when Wade got pissed but I would have been pissed too. Dude had WIDE OPEN shots. Nobody was even close to him. And I like Chalmers on Westbrook defensively, but when Miller isn’t hitting shots they have to consider bringing Bibby out more to get somebody to space the floor.

  • T-Money

nbk: top 50 in the league is garbage fo him, especially in these circumstances. Last year, Cleveland had Boobie at 48, Mo at 43 and Parker at 41. And none of these guys are better shooters than Mike Miller. Considering that all of his looks are wide open, 38 is nothing.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

I don’t know what it is about the Heat, I like LeBron, I think Wade is a great player but somehow when they play I just feel the need to root against them. I don’t know if it’s the media that got to me, or maybe it’s the idea of a superteam against a normal team and I just love to root for the underdog. Even when they Heat play the Celtics (a team I strongly dislike) I start rooting for the C’s to win. Weird.

  • http://slamonline.com SG

I got Dallas losing in the first round of the playoffs. I don’t trust their team. Thunder are gonna give Spurs hell second round. I wouldn’t be suprised if Thunder made it to the Western Conference finals.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

T-Money – I’m not saying Miller is shooting well for himself, but to say he’s already “lost his head” even though he has been 100% healthy for 0 games this season is not right. Plus its never right to bench your 4th/5th best player just because he’s having a rough shooting stretch. Plus he’s only played 31 games this year, might as well give him atleast half a season with the heat before you dub him horrible or having lost his abilities

  • http://nobulljive.com/ Enigmatic

I have no idea how Wade doesn’t lead the league in techs the way he always yells at the refs like a pimp yells at his hos.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

    @Enigmatic, lol.

  • http://www.slamonline.com KulchaKris

@nbk, you’re right, lost his head is a bit of a stretch. I guess i’m just uncertain if he has enough time this season to regain his shooting touch, especially with the level of scrutiny that the Heat are under.

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

@Enigmatic — so true. I was a fan in 2005, but the guy takes whining is a whole other level now. It’s disgusting to watch. All the stars do it, but he’s just too much. Every single play.
He’s perfected it, though. Sometimes he’s already looking at the ref with that pained face of his for the foul call before he even lands on the ground.

  • http://www.redraidersports.com Nicolas Fleming

nbk, I don’t think anyone is questioning his ability or calling him horrible. The concern is he is not performing with open looks and can’t get rhythm within the game. Which, to be fair, is not completely his fault but he needs to adjust.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

T-Money at 10:49 hit the Miller situation on the head IMO. Didn’t see that comment, and don’t possess the journalistic abilities to portray my pov lol my fault.

  • http://nobulljive.com/ Enigmatic

Off topic, but I’ma be p*ssed if West Virginia beats Clemson.
I had Clemson winning that one.
I hate having to work during the NCAA Tournament.
Oh, and shout out to Illinois High School hoops.
Where the term “March Madness” originated!

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I got Clemson winning too lol i’m stressin and sh*t for no reason

  • JTaylor21

Yesterday was a bad game for Bron overall. He needs to be aggressive when on the floor with the second unit, that’s when he needs to go into scoring mode. Also he gave KD too much space which allowed him to get into a rhythm unlike the last time they played in OKC where he was all over him.
Will all those people who were talking about CP3 never regain his best PG in the L form please 5-finger slap yourself. Dude has been balling out his mind since he came back from the concussion and he still isn’t 100% percent. Scary isn’t it.
Also, why the hell does DHow only get 13 shots when he was abusing the Bogut-less bucks frontline? I really think that Ron Jermey has to go if he continues to allow those clowns to launch three after three from the perimeter instead of throwing it down lown on every possession.

  • Pharoah

Any of the lower west seeds can upset the Spurs. I wouldn’t be surprised if Memphis does it in the first round. These Spurs are gonna disappoint a lot of people especially if Timmy keeps playing the way he does.

  • izzo

    Kenneth Faried is ridiculous.

  • http://Slamonline.com LakeShow

“It doesn’t matter. Its over.” 3 mins left. 10 point game. I know you read it the first time i just wanted you to read it again fellas :)

  • http://nobulljive.com/ Enigmatic

At least Butler/ODU is close. Got the Monarchs winning that one.
Norfolk and Hampton Roads, VA in the house!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

aahhh.. the beauty of brackets. Keeps people interested in teams and players they never even knew existed.

  • http://nobulljive.com/ Enigmatic

Actually, Jahmai, I was thisclose to enrolling at Old Dominion when I lived in Norfolk back in like ’06.
    But yeah, I hear ya.
Like, where the hell is Morehead State?
And can enrolling there guarantee you get more…you get the point. LOL

  • backboard

look, like everyone else in here i dont know Wade personally, but his pr!ck-like behaviour is nothing new to me. I first saw it when he played in international competition (WC or Olympics, dunno). He was all cocky, talking mad ish to foreign player and stuff. He seems like that cat that will hang with you and be all cool, but as soon as his cooler friends come around he will turn on you. I mean, he wasnt acting like that before Lebron came to town. If you get what i am saying…

  • backboard

    post dissapeared. meh.

    Damn you, Clemson.

Ha, enigmatic all ready losing his mind and it’s not even the second round yet.

    Terrence Hill!

  • JTaylor21

Enigmatic, I take it that you’ve been fired already.

  • ClydeSays

Nice C’s win over the Pacers. Their bench is coming together. Green/West/Arroyo/Baby have the potential to put up a ton of points…

  • http://www.redraidersports.com Nicolas Fleming

J, he can’t respond. His computer is broken.
