Tony Allen: ‘I’m a Celtic’

Allen’s paychecks may get signed by the Memphis Grizzlies, but a large part of his heart seems to still be in Boston. His comments following last night’s big Grizz win (via WEEI): “Tony Allen spent the first six seasons of his career in a Celtics uniform and the last six months as a member of the Grizzlies, so forgive him if he blurred the lines of his allegiance following his new team’s 90-87 victory against his old team. Or don’t. ‘I’m a Celtic, but unfortunately, I wear a Grizzlies jersey right now,’ said Allen, who was the only member of the Memphis starting five to receive a positive response from the Garden crowd during Wednesday night’s game. ‘It was a nice reaction. I liked it.’ Allen signed a three-year, $9.5 million deal with the Grizzlies this past offseason. The Celtics reportedly offered Allen two years and $5.2 million to remain in Boston. ‘Yeah, it’s strange, but most importantly I was just happy about the victory and how our guys stuck together and focused for 48 minutes,’ said Allen. ‘That’s what it’s all about.’ Celtics fans weren’t cheering when Allen’s night was done, as his eight points and seven rebounds helped the Grizzlies drop the C’s a full game behind the Bulls in the standings. ‘I wanted this win more than anything,’ he said. ‘We got it.’”

between him and Crash, you got a heart the size of Melo’s whole damn body.

  • http://nicekicks.com meloman2.0

pretty sure he’ll get in trouble for this

  • Orlando Woolridge

I’m not sure I understand…did somebody force him to sign with the grizzlies? If he feels its unfortunate that he’s wearing a grizzlies uni, that’s his own fault, isn’t it? I’d be pissed if I was signing his checks.

  • AMPduppp

Yeahhhh…. I appreciate the loyalty to the Celts, but he wasn’t traded- he chose to sign with the Grizzlies

  • Riggs

He said unfortunately because he felt the celtics couldve offered more money for his services. Unfortunately for him he didnt play last season like he’s playing this season.

  • jimmythesaint67

.. wanted to hear what Leon Powe thought about not getting picked up and duh .. Winning! in the Garden .. in Ainge’s mug .. how could DA look him in the face and say Troy Murphy was the better bet?! disgrace ..

  • MikeC.

    I’m a Celtic too!

  • Orlando Woolridge

I understand that he would’ve liked it if the celts offered him more, but to disrespect the team that DID give him more seems pretty f*cked up to me. I like Tony Allen and all, but damn.

  • CP

@Riggs That’s the point right there,If he was playing How he’s playing this year we would have def kept him.

  • Riggs

@Orlando: everyone seems to throw the “its a business” line when its the team doing something to a player, so it can be used this way as well.

  • http://slamonline.com The Fresh Prince of Nsam

    I’m a Celtic too.

  • RunNGun

A lot of players can’t handle the transition from a winning team to go to a losing team (who just happens to now be winning and going to the playoffs). And I agree with Orlando… that’s pretty disrespectful.

  • sounddust

    I’m not.

  • http://nba.com EJ

I always knew he was gay.

  • ripslam

What a crock of sh*t. He was the one who pranced off to Memphis for the extra cash. GTFOH

  • ThaWindy

I thnk if you ask Jordan he would say he’s a Bull…If kobe got traded, he would say he’s a laker..I think its a heart issue not merely the name on the jersey. I think Tony is loyal to the Grizz cuz he plays hard for that team. Wanting to play for a team that dosent think your worth 1 or 3 million must hurt..IM sure Boston could have matched the offer but didnt..

  • Benn0

did you just compare tony allen to jordan and kobe?

  • T-Money

Shoulda kept that thought to himself.

  • MikeC.

@ThaWindy – I get what you mean. Ewing, Oak, Starks & Mase will always be Knicks, no matter where they bounced around to after they left NY. Players make a legacy with a certain team and that’s how we think of them.

  • dsleepy

i’m sure this will endear him to all of the memphis fans.

  • JL

he wants to have the cake and eat it too. great. it’s ok to say after you retire, but not when you’re signed for 3 years with your new team!!! BTW can anyone tell me what is up with Troy Murphy?

  • robb

Once a Celdick, always a Celdick

  • http://juan.garcia@computershare.com Tina Turner

    Who’s Tony Allen?

  • Waggle

If I was his grizz teammate, I’d slap him across the face.

  • http://www.walshsportsblog.com Darren

but those others mentioned played with their team for 10+ years. Allen played six for the Celtics, its not the same.

  • aotearaw

What a prick; if he was really a Celtic he would’ve resigned at the amount they offered. Talk about sh*tting where you sleep…..pretty damn unprofessional IMO.

  • ClydeSays

TA is hilarious. He’s a shorter, sometimes crazier Artest.

  • Heals

A great opportunity for an autobiography is being missed…

  • MikeC.

^ I think a Delonte West autobiography would be a more interesting read. Because Redz is nuts!
