Derrick Rose on Celtics: ‘We Know We Can Beat Them’

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

Despite the gnashing of teeth from the folks who pray at the altar of advanced statistics — the ones trying to convince the world that Dwight Howard is the NBA’s most valuable commodity — the Chicago Bulls’ decisive victory over the Boston Celtics last night, in front of a national TV audience, cemented Derrick Rose as the 2010-’11 MVP.

Rose was his usual spectacular self, scoring 30 points and dishing out 8 assists (while his defense helped turn Rajon Rondo into a non-factor for much of the night.)

Derrick then once again displayed something that can’t be measured through numbers, which coupled with the Bulls’ stifling defense, has turned Chicago into a title contender — a galvanizing, unwaivering belief that the Bulls can beat anyone come Playoff time.

Yes, that includes Boston, a possible Eastern Conference Finals opponent. Yahoo! has the quotes:

Within the Bulls’ locker room, they will privately tell you: The belief changed when the Celtics traded Kendrick Perkins to Oklahoma City for Jeff Green and Nenad Krstic. Teammates remembered Rose’s vibe transforming the room, resonating with everyone. They have such great respect for the Celtics and learned so much from losing to them in the playoffs two years ago. The Bulls suspected they had completely closed the gap on Boston, but word of the Perkins trade ran through the room like a live wire on Feb. 24. The Bulls beat Miami that night and they’ve run off 20 of 23 games since the Celtics made the move.

With Perkins gone, everything changed for the Celtics and they knew it: the toughness, the tenacity, the presence in the post. “He was tough,” Rose said. “We could defend on someone that was big. He was really tough to go around. … They’re different.” Different doesn’t mean better. It means diminished. The Bulls beat the Celtics 44-22 in the paint, beat them badly on the boards, too. They assailed the Celtics the way the Celtics used to assail everyone else. “We know we can beat them,” Rose flatly said.

The surging Bulls are on the verge of locking up the top seed in the Eastern Conference, while Boston looks and sounds like a team unsure of itself (unsure of what the very near future holds.)

The postseason is of course an entirely different animal from these regular season battles, and we all know not to count out the Celtics, but it’s become increasingly clear: in the East, all roads to the NBA Finals go through the Windy City.

I’ve been watching you DRose, theres no doubt you’re a run away MVP.You’re game is tight boy and I’m pretty sure you’re team can beat any team in the league no problem. But, this Eastern record that the Bulls hold have no meaning to the Celtics except home court advantage. I’m still confident that my Celtics is still the team to beat in the East. Perks loss might have had a slight impact on defense but he was a liability on offense and thats a true fact. When Shaq comes back fully recovered you will see that Boston is still the same monster in the post season. I’m not saying he’ll dominate the series but his presence in the paint alone can alter games.

The dad at an airport story was sweet but proves nothing about DR’s humbleness (which I think he is humble) I’ve had convos with players who everyone says is a ^&%^%$@$% and they were just as nice as DR or RAY so does that make them humble players? It makes them human and a players demeanor is often different off the court. I’m sure if some other players answered the same question the same way that DR did they would be labeled as arrogant.

Rose needs to keep doing and saying what he is doing and saying. The media and fans will have you hating this kid before too long. lol

My Celtics still have a great chance at another banner even though my fav center (HULK) is is in OKC. DRose said it himself that w/out Perk the fear level went down and the confidence level went up. I’m sure a lot of teams felt the same way. That shows you what Hulk brought to the table night in and night out. We need to pull it together right now b/c I don’t see us getting much healthier so we need to be more cohesive.

Rose and the bulls are unproven team in the playoff. I am predicting first round exit for them.

  • BostonBaller

Past playoff success will mean nothing in these first round series..the Bulls will be ok

Good for DRose for being confident. Isn’t everybody though. The Bulls are relevant again, and so are the Knicks. Dwight Howard still gets no respect, and Kobe is STILL the man. LeBron is LeBron, DWade got better (is that possible???), Bosh got softer(didn’t think it was possible). Durant got wiser, and the Nuggets got lucky as hell. Celtics are the Spurs of the East. Blake “Quake” Griffin took the league by storm, John WHO? Everybody loves the underdog, but what about a sure thing. ATL and Indiana could shake things up.

cantrell, would you be referring to me with your last comment? If so then why so.

@ BostonBaller: Ha, that’s an awesome nick name for Perkins. Hulk. That’s actually perfect for him on the Celtics!

Hulk SMASH, Perk rebound, Hulk get Tech. lol. We went from Hulk to Green (which in name fits) Let the playoffs begin!!

yo I cosign enigmatic about the heat and the heat and the celtics…but really i feel like it’s mostly heat. orlando could be a challenge…rose is scared to go into the lane against dwight…as he should be. and homie has improved that 3 ball lately..but not enough that he can just camp out there..plus the bulls offense is basically getting rose into the lane..if the magic can keep him out…

  • Wall Ball…

@datkid, Rose ain’t scared of ish homie…It took D-Howard long enough to get some O…I mean how many years and how many legends had to work with the man….He’ll self-destruct anyway with his attitude problem…play ball and stop acting like a lil dude…

  • Wall Ball…

@Mars the Kincks are only relevant on the east coast and NBATV…Where are their headquarters located? Probably the east coast….
