Dwight Howard Wins 3rd Defensive Player of the Year Award

That’s three in a row now for Dwight, and there’s no reason to believe anyone will unseat him from his defensive throne anytime soon. The Orlando Sentinel reports: “The announcement will be coming any day now — maybe this afternoon after Magic practice — that Dwight Howard will be named the NBA’s defensive player of the year. It will be a three-peat for Howard, who has won the award the past two seasons. I voted for Howard on my official NBA ballot. I expect him to win in a landslide, considering the other top candidates were Andre Iguodola, Grant Hill (yes, Grant) and Keith Bogans (another former Magic player. Wow, they could use the defensive help against Atlanta). The Magic have called for a ‘major’ announcement at Amway Center today at 1:30 p.m.”

Keith Bogans? Really? I could’ve sworn I’ve only read negative things about him from Slamonline’s commenters…

^ i think like ONE dude voted for keith bogans.
and the negative things you’ve heard about him are warranted. he shouldn’t be a starting 2.

Lol. I’ve actually read a lot about the defense of Luol Deng. So I would’ve expected Deng’s name before Bogans…

  • Will Lee

    Pau Gasol

Yeah I thought Deng would be at least number 2?

i think dre or j smoove will be second place or grant hill

    Dude’s overrated defensively.

Tony Allen isnt even mentioned? But yeah, good job Dwight. What’s the over/ under on DPOY’s for Dwight through his career? 6? 7?

He had no competition for this. What he needs to do is learn how to control himself so that he can stay in the game. And make a free throw every once in a while. Stop whining about the hard fouls. Shaq got the same treatment and kept his cool. Get it together Dwight.

    he s the real mvp

Luol Deng should be in the mix, he should also be in the mix for MIP, but considering he is the most underrated player in the NBA, its unlikely..

Dre is an amazing defensive player, he deserves some recognition for it. Hard to pick someone unseating Howard in the near future though.

    Co-sign JTaylor. For real.
    Howard blocks shots and rebounds.
Ain’t that what a big man’s supposed to do?
My vote woulda gone to Tony Allen.
His defensive mindset has completely changed the Grizzlies this season.

Nobody else really contends with Dwight for this award in the social consciousness. It doesn’t really matter how well other people defend – until somewhat of a movement starts and people start to notice and jump on someone else’s bandwagon they might as well rename this the Dwight Howard Award. Personally I’d love to see Gerald Wallace back to his old 2 BPG + 2 SPG days, bringing a new aggressive attitude to a relevant Blazers team next season and picking up a few DPoY votes.

KG was 2nd, Chandler was 3rd, Tony Allen was 4th and Rondo was 5th.

If All-NBA Def teams follow the voting results and stay true to 1 Center, 2 Forwards and 2 Guards, here is the teams: 1st – Howard, Garnett, Allen, Rondo, Bryant 2nd – Chandler, Hill, Iguodala, CP3 and Wade.
