Kenyon Martin Unhappy With Team Defense on Kevin Durant

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

You’d be salty too if someone dropped 41 seemingly effortless points on you, on national television, in Game 1 of a Playoff series.

Kenyon Martin was just that — mad at the way his team defended (or tried to, anyway) the NBA’s leading scorer during their series-opening loss.

Martin doesn’t like George Karl’s defensive scheme against Kevin Durant, and is pleading for immediate changes. Namely, he’d like to see more double-teams thrown at Durant, forcing his teammates to make shots.

The Denver Post has the quotes:

“When there’s a will there’s a way – you figure it out, there’s no excuse in this league,” said Martin, the power forward who guards Durant from time to time. “Make him (pass it to) some one else. If you have him and Westbrook on the court the same time, make Thabo Sefolosha and Serge Ibaka make plays. Run somebody at these guys. I don’t agree with (one-on-one) – we don’t let Kobe play one-on-one when we play him, no matter where he is on the court, so why would you let Kevin Durant play one-on-one.”

“He shot right over Ray (Felton) like there was nobody guarding him,” Martin elaborated on Monday. “It doesn’t matter who you are, even if you’re the toughest defender in the world, (if you’re 6-1), he’s going to shoot right over him. You got to try something different, run somebody at him. Pick-and-roll? Jump on him. For three games, he’s been having his way with us – and I’m not comfortable with it.”

The Nuggets have done a lot of talking before and during this series with the OKC Thunder, and now it seems that the chirping is being directed internally. That can’t possibly be a good sign.

As for taking the ball out of Kevin Durant’s hands? It’s a suggestion head coach George Karl ought to seriously consider for tomorrow night’s Game 2, though he likely didn’t want to have to read about it in the media from one of his veteran players.

they will learn quickly about double teaming durant and letting westbrook take over. Both of them can hurt you.

Let Durant get his and stop Westbrook. Russ is talented but he commits a lot of TOs and that’s what they should take advantage of. Too bad they won’t have Afflalo for Game 2.

  • Zabba

Nuggets can still win it without Affalo. Like Martin said, make Kevin’s teammate win the game, not Kevin himself.

You will learn quickly that you speak out against George Karl, George Karl will speak out against you. Examples: Ray Allen, AI, Carmelo Anthony, etc.

i seen wilson chandler give kd some problems… if they do that they wud have a better chance… kmart is too slow…..

it doesnt really matter what they do, they cant guard kd and westbrook both at the same time.. the playoffs are about to get thunderstruck!

  • T-Money

    he ain’t lying.

i hate gallinari so much i am a nugget fan still but i hate him and he blows at defense he is a pu$$y

  • fruizm

k-mart really stepped his game up though!

  • Anthony

    kd is soft

You do realize that Galli did a great job at helping Denver stay in the game. Dude had 18 points and was their second highest scorer.

  • http://www.slamonline.com c_cantrell

Call him what you want, dude still did work for 41 points.

They don’t need to guard both opf them tho. KMart is right, take one of them away and you have a greater chance to win. Westbrook and KD both went off in game 1 and they barely one the game. Going solely based of points scored, if they held KD to 21 instead of 41 they win by double digits.

Durant is gonna score no matter what, 6’9, 6’10 shooting guard, scoring champ, it’s proven. Now can ya’ll contain Westbrook, cause he’s the one who creates. TO’s or not he’s better than the average PG…COUGH COUGH Ty Lawson, Ray Felton. What you do is play tall (Kenyon, Nene,Galinari, Chandler, Ray?), double Durant, Give Westbrook the three, and put Harden on the line. Make someone else beat you punkz.

i like bug marley’s idea of stopping westbrook. although he’s very hard to stop. not sure how to do that. plus, kmart should really stop shooting 20 footers that he has no chance of making. painful.

    It’s a contract year.

You think guys really step their game up just cuz they’re in a contract year? I know it seems to happen that way at time, but I feel like if the skills aren’t there then they’re not there. I think KMart is just finally healthy. But maybe I’m naive.

    Shut up Anthony.
Saying Kd is soft is dumb. Just look at his childhood, how hard he worked to get where he is and against who he is playing night in and night out and you will see that he is a great competitor who doesn’t back down.
You are right when you say that he isn’t as athletic as others.

The Thunder are going to take the series in 5. The Nuggets don’t have enough fire power to win the series.

  • http://Slamonline.com Datkid

Ty Lawson and ray Felton are not avg pg’s. Also k.mart has a point.

  • http://slamonline.com AllDayEveryDay

@Jon L. How the hell do the Nuggets not have enough firepower? They have scorers at every position…

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

The Nuggs should have had Wilson Chandler in the game more than they did. They put him back in with like 2 minutes left… He’s pretty much the only player on the Nuggets who stands a chance at guarding Durant 1-on-1.
The Thunder cannot have Westbrook and Durant both going off–K-Mart is right in that they have to shut ONE of them down. Durant is too good to risk leaving open if you double Westbrook–so I’d say double Durant, jam the paint, and force Westbrook to hit jumpshots.
It’d be a lot easier if Westbrook wasn’t shooting lights out from midrange though.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Also, WHY in the world was Raymond Felton assigned single-coverage of Durant?! Where is the logic in that?

  • Joosh

i think gary forbes should injure him
