Kevin Durant Downplays Shouting Match With Russell Westbrook

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

In Game 4 of the OKC Thunder/Denver Nuggets first round series, Russell Westbrook put up a staggering 30 shots. The explosive point guard only connected on 12 of them, and missed the biggest shot of the night in the game’s dying moments.

Westbrook’s superstar teammate, Kevin Durant, and head coach Scott Brooks were less than thrilled with the reckless shooting.

They were mostly displeased with the shot selection — as the point guard settled for far too many jumpers — and not so much the amount of attempts.

The Oklahoman looks into the matter:

Midway through the first half of Monday’s Game 4 loss at Denver, the Thunder’s All-Star duo of Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook reportedly had a heated exchange during a timeout. TNT sideline reporter Pam Oliver reported the verbal dispute during the game. On Tuesday, the Thunder insisted the jawing was positive.

“It was all about trying to do the right thing,” Thunder coach Scott Brooks said. “We got to get a stop. That’s what it was about. We got to stop the ball. Their point guards are getting inside the paint. The bigs and the guards have got to do a better job of stopping the basketball. That’s what the conversation was about. It’s funny because it’s in the playoffs on national TV, but it happens a lot. It doesn’t happen every timeout every game. But guys are emotional. Guys care about what we do and they express that and I like that. I do the same thing.”

Durant also downplayed the incident. “We’ve been doing that all season,” Durant said. “That’s a part of a basketball team. You’re not going to always be happy all the time. … Sometimes you have to scream at guys for them to get the point. That’s what we were doing.”

The OKC Thunder remain in control of the series, as they’ll look to close it out tonight at home.

Judging strictly by their reactions following the incident, one suspects that this very public bump in the road will bring Durant, Westbrook and their teammates closer together, which can only mean bad news for Denver and the rest of the League.

LOL, If I am Westbrook and demand a trade or leave, because Kevin Durant gets all the credit when he shoots too much, plays no defense and lost the 1st round series with the Lakers last year, because he was trying to be the HERO. Westbrook is the key to the Thunder, KD can get 30, but if Westbrook is penetrating, dishing and hitting his pull up. Thunder is top 5 team in the league. KD is overrated. BOOK IT!!!

  • http://kb24.com DreXnaW21

i hate Westbrook so much, he’s so stuck up and arrogant, also has attitude problems and thinks he’s better than everyone else

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

Seed, I like Westbrook’s game about 80% of the time but I think the Thunder would benefit more from a pass first point like Rondo. That’s just me though.

  • AD

@the seed…. the thunder lost last cuz of their size.. yes kd could of played better but thats not the point.. Westbrook takes too many jumpshots.. he supposed to set up his teamates first… but (him and drose do this but carlos boozer shuts his mouth) and you cant be overated when you are the leading scorer 2 straight years even though he gets alot of calls…… HATERS THESE DAYS

  • The Black Deron Williams

Durant and Brooks are right… No question about that. And I also agree that the Nuggets are in a lot of trouble. I’ve seen all four games so far and the Nuggets never stood a chance of beating this Thunder team 4 times. And I’m a Nuggets fan so it kills me to admit this!

  • Riggs

wow it has to be a record that the first two comments are already retarded.

  • Jer dawg

Break up the OKC Thunder. No amount of money can overcome egomania. Basketball precedent has been set before and most recent is Kobe/Shaq power struggle. Another example is Marbury/Garnett which is more comparable. Garnett was always a team player first, but everyone concedes that Marbury was the Stockton to KG’,s Malone. Marbury isn’t having it and Westbrook will not either. A Shame, too.

  • A.B.

    Thunder,Finals. Nuff said….

  • Fat Lever

The kid is like 22. Got d@mn. KD is only 22,23. All of you saying to trade Westbrook are fools. Yea, just trade a top 5 PG in the league, who’s under 25 and presto! Problem solved. This isn’t even a problem, it’s 2 guys who want to win that had a disagreement. Ish happens all the time.

  • T-Money

i’m telling you this will not end well unless westbrook defers and concedes that kd is the better player. he’s playing crunch time basketball like he’s the go-to guy.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

Wow, I didn’t think people would overreact so much based on one game, all over the internet people are comparing RW and KD to Marbury and KG. Seriously, one game and he gets thrown under the bus like that. These dudes get along great, they are performing great, and everzbody should just shut up and stop acting like Russ is ruining everything.

  • http://Www.fiba.com Darksaber

If this “shouting match” makes people overreact this much, then they’ve never played team sports at a competitive level.
This a’int a damn movie, teammates get in each other’s faces. It’s cathartic.

  • Jono

Watch the Nuggets to come back from 0-3 to win the series. Book it!

  • http://google c_cantrell

Retards, its just one game. smh

  • T-Money

jahmai, darksaber: my comments are not based on their little shouting thingy at all. i’ve been saying this for a minute just from watching games. kd often doesn’t even touch the ball in crunch time – that’s a problem!

  • robb

Westbrook is good but he’s trying too hard to be “the guy” in OKC.

  • Ali

Stop with all the madness. These guys are young and still finding their way in The Association. Calling anyone of these guys arrogant or stuck up is far fetched. From what I’ve seen of Westbrook, he has aways had to fight and prove himself for everything on the court, dating back to his short UCLA stint up to now, so yeah he probally does have a chip on his shoulder, but stuck up! Naw DreXnaW21 I think your puttin’ a bit much on it. Thank you Fat Lever!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Slick Ric

Im not gonna say KD lost that series against the lakers for them but westbrook definitely outplayed him.

  • http://www.boogiewilliams.com Boing Dynasty

“and im not gonna talk to Russy the way Run is…”

  • Eddie

Caboose is probably perkins. Ish, campaigning for Rondo to come to your team. Quit wit the hurt feelings boi.

  • http://dillanleuyahoo.com Holy Baller

I agree that everyone is overreacting. The only problem I have with Westbrook is that he’s just not a smart PG. He has all the physical tools any guard needs, but he’s just so dang stupid. He forces the ball when there’s no need to and turns the ball over. Then in about the last 10 games, he thinks he’s Reggie Miller and jacks about 10 threes a game. He is NOT a good 3 point shooter and he’s too dumb to realize it.

  • http://google c_cantrell

Westbrook is a top 2 or 3 point guard (IMO) in the league, but he also has the top scorer in the league to play with which makes him feel as if he has more to prove and step up to. Westbrook is a terrific, dynamic point man who can become a game changer as good as any elite player in the league. He does shoot alot, but there is nothing wrong with that, KD does the same thing. Now rarely he will have a night in which he obviously is forcing too much and not getting much production. But is it really that big of a deal? Yal don’t make near as big of a deal out of Kobe doing this (which happens at least 3 out of every 10 games). Every player is going to have bad shooting games. And as for the confrontation between KD and Russ, it’s not a big deal. If yal have ever played organized basketball at any point in your lives, then you would understand that the leader of a team is going to get on your case if your screwing up. It’s not going to effect the chemistry of OKC or anything like that. Some people speak too much without making any sense.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

Westbrook better than Paul/Rose/Deron? I’m glad you added the IMO.

  • unrel

the only thing i see wrong with this ONE game.. is that when a PG comes down and fires up a shot.. no one else touches the ball.. at least put up 30 shots within the offense.. if he made more of those shots… this would be a different head-line.. so stop with the trade demands and breaking down the kid’s game.. that’s just silly..

  • scala

the 1st dude to comment on this called KD overrated, wow, are you a lakers fan?

  • Ali

The kid has 3 years under his belt, HE’S STILL LEARNING! A bunch of media hype and alot of people buying into it, like they are at each others throats or throwing blows. Let him and Durant figure it out their own way and STFU media and all the critics.

  • Riggs

Im glad theyre arguing, thats team camaraderie. I argue with my brother all the time when we’re playing in leagues but it helps in the long run.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Russell Westbrook always does that. This ONE game, is just the one y’all paid attention too. Westbrook is an issue as a PG. He ALWAYS shoots to much.

  • robb

    I confirm AllBall’s comment.

  • Dar

@c_cantrell. Difference is dude… Kobe is the focal point of the offense, their best player.. they want him to shoot. Russ is the PG, he should be getting his teammates involved. I like Westbrook but he’s gotta understand that he is the PG and if he wants to be a volume scorer he should ask to play off the ball.

  • Pugz

    Russell Westbrook = J.R. Smith

  • paul

Russell needs to understand that Durant is the first look. And second look.
When that gets figured out, OKC is championship material. And it will get figured out. Most of the time, Durant and Westbrook cooperate very well.

    Best pg, though, is Rondo.

  • http://www.twitter.com/dfrance21 dfrance21

Saying Russell needs to be traded is overreacting, but I don’t think that this is just a one game issue. Westbrook forces the issue a lot, pulling up for jumpers early on in the shot clock, forcing drives. I think that this is something that can develop into a real issue if its not curb. I think the praise he’s been getting, while well deserved, may be going to his head. He needs to realize that he can still get his, but setting up his team should be the first look.

  • Sizzle

He is more suited to be a slashing 2 guard than a point guard. I don’t understand the gripe, if KD gets 30 plus shots and OKC loses there is no gripe, but Russ can’t do it? I understand the issues between these two, but as one poster said awhile back “Durant is a one trick pony. And his trick has been seen.” This current team will be a perrenial team in the west for the next few years, but that is only because the Lakers are aging. I think as a whole they are overrated and overhyped. We will see though.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Neither of them is perfect. And some of y’all are crazy.

  • GreenBall

co. sign dfrance. I`ve watched every single OKC game this season. my favorite player in the L was Russell, but something changed after the all star break. I think it just went to his head, it`s a real shame, cause now their offense consist of a 2man iso team.

  • http://www.slamonline.com c_cantrell

    ^AllBall..
    Westbrook > DWill
    Westbrook > CP3
    Westbrook = Rose

  • http://www.slamonline.com c_cantrell

    ^Dar..
Na he is fine right where he is at bro. He is just developing his game, and it won’t happen overnight. The only way he is going to consistently make these seemingly wild shots he throws up is to practice them during games like he does. Practice makes perfect bro.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Or stop shooting those stupid shots, you have the best scorer in he league next to you. What Westbrook does is inexcusable, & shouldn’t be practiced. Westbrook should be playing the 2, and he would make a great SG. Reading that you think he’s not only better then CP3 and DWill and also think Rose is to says it all. wow

  • Dar

@c_cantrell Point is.. he’s not suppose to be taking wild shots or even practicing them. He SHOULD be practicing how to think the game through, slow down, run the offense and get the best shot possible and be a PG, if he wants to score ‘a la DWade’ he should move over to the 2 spot.

  • mj23

c_cantrell you crazy you didnt se what cp3 is doing to the lakers?damn people and d rose is not the best pure point guard he is a scoring pg CP3 is the best pure pg the same with westbrook but he playes D atleast :)

  • http://google c_cantrell

    ^mj23..
I never said Westbrook was a better pure point than CP3, nor did i ever once say that Rose is the best pure point in the league. Rose and Westbrook are both scoring guards, but yet they both have bigger and better impacts on thier teams and on the league.

  • http://google c_cantrell

    ^Dar..
I guess everything i said just went completely over your head. Dude is a “SCORING POINT GUARD” ok? Do you f*cking understand the concept of a f*cking “SCORING POINT GUARD?” A “SCORING POINT GUARD” looks to “SCORE” first. A player does not have to be a pass first player to make a good point guard. Now if ya wouldn’t mind, take your leave from this site and don’t plague the rest of us with your ignorance.

  • Manuel

Well I guess if you rein in Westbrook you get bad results let him play his game cause if you don’t you’re not going to go far in this playoffs, because the nuggets were a good team and if they had a superstar they would have won game five.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Durant proved my point yesterday. go to sleep

  • http://newregime.ca freddy

    ive followed okc for the past year on the court, twitter, websites;
KD and james are the best of friends and westbrook is never in the picture and they are the same age group… in my opinion they are teammates and that is it… if young guys on the same team dont hang out especially when they are in to the same things… there is a problem somewhere…
