Kobe Bryant Fined $100k for Gay Slur

The NBA hit Bryant with a financial slap on the wrist ($100,000) for his regrettable use of a gay slur against a ref last night. David Stern called it “offensive and inexcusable.” Here’s more from the Commish: “While I’m fully aware that basketball is an emotional game, such a distasteful term should never be tolerated … insensitive or derogatory comments are not acceptable and have no place in our game or society.”

This is stupid. On the floor, players call each others female animals and use the word ni**a, I get more upset when people say ni**a and call women out there name, but saying f*g, gets this jacked up country in an up roar. I am going to keep it real. Its against God’s intent to be g*y. You are not born with it, its a spirit, because I have seen people get healed from being g*y. So the born stuff is crap. Kobe shouldn’t have stated it but the NBA fining him is G*Y, So forget it and if a ref is calling ticky tat fouls, Kobe should call him it again. Its just words, and I am tired of the GLAAD movement, acting like its the new Civil Rights movement. Being too happy is sad, and Stern was just playing to the system and 100,000 to Kobe is more like 100 to us. BOOK THAT!!

i’m extremely surprised that this is somewhat controversial. it doesn’t happen often but there’s no grey area here: stern is right. if you’re going to argue against the fine, argue against the act of fining someone for an homophobic slurs. the fact that such a fine has no precedents or that this particular slur is commonly used are very, very weak arguments against the fine. once upon a time, racial slurs were commonly used and everyone got away with it. not anymore, which is a good thing. i’m pretty sure that players will now think twice before using an homophobic slur on the court, which is also good thing – always.

  • T-Money

truthteller obviously does not have a very good grasp of the notion of freedom of speech.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Tmoney you are a lawyer. You know precedent. Stern established a precedent that slurs can get you fined. Now it is about which slurs are bad enough for a fine. Who decides that? Stern alone? How is he making that decison? I don’t like arbitrary fines. I don’t understand which statements get you fined.

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

all imma say is the precedent has been set…

  • http://www.hoopsvibe.com/features/overdribbling chiqo

i think stern would drop the hammer on anyone caught using a slur like this. i don’t think we’re giving preferential treatment to gays and lesbians at all. also, i’m fine with the religious argument of homosexuality being a sin, but can we also remember the parts of the bible where you have to love your neighbor as you love yourself and to esteem others higher than yourself?

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/officerbarbrady what

All I know is saying a word, no matter how horrible, is not worth a fine ten times bigger than what you get for trying to rip an opposing player’s nuts off during a game. Reggie Evans: $10,000. Kobe: $100,000.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/officerbarbrady what

I wonder what the fine would have been if Kobe called the ref a honkey.

  • O

I heard Mister Cee started spinning “We’re Not Gonna Take It” by Twisted Sister after news of the fine dropped…

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    B*tch is a slur. As is n*gga.

  • http://YouTube.com/user/Uncle05Sam Earl

The Seed is definitely 100% right.

  • T-Money

allen: of course slurs can get you fined. why is that shocking? an of course stern can enforce decisions by a committee of one – he’s the head of private corporation. if you are arguing the legality of this fine, well there is a great amount discretion conferred by stern’s position (mind you that kobe can and has appealed the fine). but besides that, let’s not miss the forest for the trees: stern is sending the message that homophobic behaviors will not be tolerated. that’s great! as a commissioner, he doesn’t necessarily have to refer to a provision before making every call, he gets paid big bucks to make judgment calls. he showed good judgment here.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Ok I can see you and Ryan agree.
I am bothered by the decision to set this slur aside as a finable offense. If the justification was that abusing refs is intolerable I would be cool. But the idea that this particular word over all other slurs is worth $100,000 is bothersome.

  • http://www.google.com Tristan Warneke

I wonder what the fine would have been if Kobe had called him the Rupaul of Referee’s.

  • T-Money

allen: i think any racial slur would have resulted in a fine in that spot. and im GUESSING that “billy! f-cking b-tch” would be a fine too. although b-tch is a tricky one because we have decided as a society that this is somewhat of an acceptable term, e.g. not censored on tv shows (which is actually very telling of what’s pc and what’s not).

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I am not sure any slur would have been a fine. F*ggot is considered by many to be roughly on par with ethnic and racial slurs.
I am really just mad about the exception for b*tch and the fact that Stern dropped the hammer so quickly compared to other times (sterling the recent ref issue) when he has delayed.

  • FedUp

Wow, and why everyone desires to share their opinions on the matter eludes me, when it affects no one on here; and yes, future smart-ass I’m sharing MY opinion because I could longer restrain myself as I read all these retarted comments (oh no, a slur!). Guys, girls, or whatever, just lean back, unwind in whatever sitting or lieing apparatus you utilize now, and get your prying noses out of it.

  • http://slamonline.com bull24

was he talking to a ref or rudy gay?

  • Just Being Real

“Its against God’s intent to be g*y. You are not born with it, its a spirit, because I have seen people get healed from being g*y.”

Funny, at one time or another, an oft-cited justification for slavery in this country was also God’s will. Whether you’re a man of faith or not, this is a secular nation. It’s time to retire that argument, bro.

  • Tim Dogg

FedUp: If you think ignorance affects no one on here, that just proves your ignorance.
Truth Teller: You are right. You don’t have sex with a man as you would a woman. I don’t see this as any sort of groundbreaking statement. You also don’t have sex with a sheep as you would your sister.

  • Tim Dogg

And I don’t know where the rest of you are from, but pretty much any major company in any major city on the west coast would fire you for using that word in the workplace. Or at least suspend you and make you take sensitivity training.

  • Seriously

    This topic is so gay

  • mickfanning

no reason for gay people to get upset its quite obvious that he didnt use the term like that. i am very surprised at how much david stern is crackin down on kobe, seeing as how stern fixes all the important laker games and playoff series since the portland ”melt down”. Hopefully the laker games are called fairly this playoffs (highly doubt it) its really unfortunate we have ”riggings” messing up such a wonderful game over the years.

  • mickfanning

The Seed, with some more blind hatred for gay people.
Tell me, Seed: What exactly makes you think YOU know what “God’s Intent” is? And let’s step back for a second–just like Just Being Real said. This is a secular nation and everyone has basic rights, and it’s not about what YOU believe. I know it might seem like a new concept to you, but not everybody in the United States is religious, Christian, and/or homophobic. Crazy idea, right?

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

@ Seed: But going by your Bible argument, you believe that it’s “God’s Intent” for people not to be gay, right? Gay people are inherently evil and therefore don’t deserve civil rights like other minorities–because the Bible tells you that, right?
And yet you’re offended by people using the word “b!tch”? But wait, the Bible ALSO tells us, depending on what verse you’re reading, that women are inferior to men. So is it God’s Intent that women should be inferior to men–that they should be treated as objects, demeaned, and denied your respect? OF COURSE NOT.
The Bible also tells us that women are the root of sin, so going by your crazy literal interpretation of the Bible, isn’t a gay MAN less of a sinner than a WOMAN, because the WOMAN is the original sinner?
Now, you’re completely right in being offended by the liberal use of the word “b!tch.” It’s just as demeaning a word for women as f*g is to homosexuals, even if a lot of people don’t see it that way (which they should, of course).
But please, spare us your misguided biblical rationale for being a bigot on one hand, and a self-righteous hypocrite on the other.
I don’t know what you’re getting at comparing this to the Civil Rights movement, but believe it or not gays deserve the same civil rights as you and me, black or white, regardless if you think it’s YOUR “God’s Intent” that gays shouldn’t exist.

robb is just like Kobe – stupid

  • horsey

I think if you don’t understand that “give me a break” isn’t the same as “give me a brake” (robb 6:38) you might be too stupid to comment on big boy issues. Finish 8th grade and come back with some actual knowledge.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Mars

sorry Slamers…I was too explicit. Where does this money go to? It’s not like it goes to the United Gay Association, so why bother. $100 G’s is shoe laces to Kobe and, WE ALL KNOW they say worse words.

  • jimmer

@Seed; The Bible also says that it is ok to own a slave, as long as he is not of your country. This is bad news for Canadians and Mexicans…. and Africans. It also says that those who touch the skin of a dead pig are unclean… better check what goes into your Spalding next time you play son… Also, as sanctioned in Exodus 2:17, I would like to sell my daughter into slavery… in this day and age, what do think would be a fair price for her? I got time for faith, but not bigotry.

  • Indigo

@Seed: People that uses quotations from the bible to build an argument seriously need to check out their calendar. It´s been 2000 years, dude, things has changed since then. As Jimmer et al already showed, there are more examples of bigotry and discrimination in that book than gay-hating.

  • http://dsjkflf.com Jukai

    Jimmer’s response was awesome.

  • Brickshooting J

I’m dissapointed that Kobe didn’t use that slur towards Andrew Bynum.

  • mark

The bible was written to control people. I’m pretty sure man wrote the bible and not God. So many idiots in this world. You’re all sheep.

  • John

How come Kenyon Martin didn’t get fined for calling Cuban one? And Cuban is a team owner, you’d think that would warrant a fine and KG has been caught on camera saying the same thing.

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

Bravo Teddy, that was a good argument. And Seed, just be quiet, you obviously can’t make an intelligent argument.

  • T-Money

man, some disturbing comments in here.

  • vtrobot

The fine is that big because it’s Kobe. Like most of the L’s policing, the inconsistency is part of what’s annoying. The people posting anti-gay statements and using religion as their argument are really sad. I’m not religious, but there’s a good chance that I live my life in a more “Christian” way than you. Your religion doesn’t promote openness and humility? The people who refuse to allow others to think and act however they want, and never doubt or question or rethink their own beliefs are the worst kind. That’s some Taliban-style sh1t. I guess you must just be young and not have a solid understanding of life yet or have been raised by confused people, who were raised by confused people, etc. Please mature soon. Playoffs are here! Lakeshow did themselves a huge favor with last night’s L. Peace.

  • Dave

Tim Hardaway has to be at home thinking: “They fined him for this shit?!”

  • Andrea

mickfanning, it’s funny there are people like you (who make all Lakers fans look bad) who believe the league hates your boy Kobe and fixes games against the Lakers AND at the same time you have people who claim the EXACT opposite. Which is which? Don’t you notice some inconsistency in this argument among fans such as yourself, tough it’s hard to call someone like you a “fan” because those are claims made by undeducated fans, not TRUE fans. Also, do you know the NBA is a business, right? If they didn’t fine Kobe they would’ve been subject to lots of criticism. I mean, after Kobe’s comment there was a big outcry from the media, bloggers, tv networks, gay groups associations etc., all of them asking the league to punish Kobe in some sort of way. So it’s obvious the league had to do something about it. I don’t really see what this “Stern hates Kobe” thing (proof?) has to do with anything. You just make yourself look bad and uninformed about the NBA business.
Besides, are you ok with your Kobe’s comments?
PS: Why does SLAM keep posting ridiculous comments such as mickfanning’s and doesn’t publish other people’s comments? I still have to figure out how the comments section works.

  • JD

    @the seed
have you ever considered that the bible may not be gods word all through but sometimes the interpretation of his word to suit the people who compiled these bibles opinions of this time its why many of Christianity more controversial attitudes seem to be similar to general opinion in the bible was put together

  • rikson

beings should be able to fu(k if bot h parties want to… end of discussion!

  • cramzy

kg should be broke at this point. He says f*** these f****** before every game lol and im not even joking.

  • jrok

SMH @ the seed… couldnt be more of a bigot if you tried buddy.. that type of rationale that you showed in your post is actually much worse than what kobe actually did… stupidest thing ive ever heard somebody say, “it is not gods intent for people to be gay”… if thats what you really believe then you’re past the point of being helped SMFH…

  • Andrea

yes, but has KG ever been caught saying gay slurs by tv cameras, cramzy? thats the difference.

  • http://slamonline.com Spaceship Jay

@ jimmer; If your going to state all of those things, please be correct with it. With your knowledge of biblical history, I’m perplexed that your without enough knowledge to know that the standards that God would have us live by changed after Christ (biblicaly speaking), making all of what you said sound incredibly dumb to those that bothered to read the rest (unless your being sarcastic of course). Read the rest of the book please.

  • http://slamonline.com Spaceship Jay

    And Yikes… co-sign T-Money too.

  • Lz – Cphfinest3

Bigotry, ignorance and demeaning comments are just plain stupid and sad. Less enlightened people needs these things to feel better about themselves, contain their own insecurity in life and their fear of things/people that are different. When people don’t understand something the easiest thing to do is to create distance between themselves and said thing, this can be done using slurs like this or singing God’s name or whatever. I personally think that all kinds of religion are completely ilogical, but people can believe in what they want and I completely respect that, whether it is God, Allah or Papa Smurf – it is up to the single individual to live his life the way he/she wants and it is not up to me to judge or decide what is wrong or right for other human beings. Live and let live people – respect other people’s right to be different and live their life the way they want to.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    LZ
You know I respect your thoughts, but you’re not making sense.
If it’s ok for people be different and live how they want, then is it also ok for some peole to live like Seed and Cantrell? I mean, they are doing what makes them happy, and they have decided for themselves what is right and wrong, correct?
The truth is, everybody has standards of right and wrong, and we all use those standards to make value judgements about other people’s behavior. Period.
The issue is when we justify violence, hatred or mistreatment because of our values. It’s not always wrong–if it was we would never have revolutions–but it is always dangerous.
    To certain other folks.
Many of y’all commenting on the Bible have clearly never spent much time in the study of the book, or the assorted commentaries that provide context about the times in which it was written and the moral attitudes of that day. That’s fine, but to then turn around and randomly quote passages and tenets out of context is just intellectually dishonest.
If you disagree with the Bible, cool. But, I would hope that before you form an opinion on what most learned people consider the greatest book ever written by mankind, you would at least spend some reading and studying it yourself. Just seems like a smart thing to do.
