Kobe Bryant Won’t Allow Tests on Injured Ankle

So much for getting that MRI on his bum ankle/foot, as Kobe refused to get any tests done, going against the wishes of his employer. From ESPN: “Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant has a sprained left ankle and is officially listed as day to day, a team spokesman told reporters on Monday. ‘He says he’ll play,’ Lakers coach Phil Jackson said of Bryant’s status for Tuesday’s pivotal Game 5 with the Lakers’ first-round series tied 2-2 … Bryant spent Monday undergoing extensive treatment on the ankle, according to Jackson, including icing, electrostimulation and massage. Bryant declined to undergo any further examination of the injury through X-rays or an MRI, going against the wishes of the Lakers front office. ‘Right now, he’s not,’ Jackson said. ‘We’re trying to convince him that it might be a good idea.’ When asked what the Lakers’ medical staff thought of Bryant’s injury, Jackson said, ‘He won’t let them deal with it.’”

lol he’s gonna mess it up even more now because he doesnt know the extent of his injury. What a dumba*s

    wow…stupid move by KB.

  • cheeks

    he droppin 40 tonight!

  • Sean

Gotta respect that – stupid or not- you only do that if you really, really love this game. Kobe’s my kinda dude.

  • bull22

iam so sick of this idiot trying to magnify his achievements by playing the sick heroic card which has been wornout enough…. he is probably really not injured, because no person in his right mind would not check it out for his own wellbeing!

  • SmOoVe

When you sprain your ankle so many times you know what’s wrong w/ it

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

    Old school.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

I’d like to see the Lakers fans reactions if he truly has a severe injury and it catches up to him in a week or two and instead of trying to figure out what it may be and try and get a proper diagnosis, he goes out in some fake gangsta sort of way, plays on one leg and then shortchanges his teammates and fans alike by his stupidity. I don’t wish injury on no one, even cats I hate like this douche, so I hope he’s well enough to play without using a crutch (pardon the pun) as an excuse somewhere down the line.

  • http://nba.com EJ

Wonder when JTaylor will say that he won’t test it cause he faked it.

  • http://www.slamonline.com jumpman3224

As a Laker fan, I’m really torn on this. They need Kobe. Tonight’s game is a must win. And, I respect that he won’t let anything keep him off the court. But, depending on the severity of the injury he could be risking a much more serious injury that could plauge the team in the long run. I guess it really is now or never. There may not even be a season next year. I expect to see a lot of screen with CP3 and whoever Kobe is guarding as the Hornets feel out his limits. I also expect Kobe to go above and behind and come up with a huge game. We’ll see. Either way the Lakers need to focus on rebounding and defense if they want to win tonight.

  • Yesse

    You can’t handle the truth.

  • Roger

jarret jack needs to put a foot under this mofo.

  • Brandon

Kobe’s a warrior. He jus set a new precedent for injuries in the playoffs.

  • Morgan

@Eboy – the Lakers have been winning and losing based on Kobe’s decisions for almost a decade. Going by the results, even if this is a stupid decision in hindsight, I’ll take Kobe’s judgement every time. Its go hard or go home time and you’ve got to respect him for going all in.
@bull22 – you’ve clearly never worked in any kind of medical field, you’d be surprised what people will risk their long term health for.

  • NJ4Life

I think Kobe’s gonna play regardless, so he ‘s feel that if he gets an MRI and the results aren’t good, it’ll mess with him. The only thing worse than playing with an injury is playing like you’re trying to not get injured.

  • Mike From Spain

vintage Kobe… damn, Lakers will be out in the 1st round. If Phil is not able to rein in his diva player then no one can. Can you spell uncoachable? For the record, I am a Lakers fan.

  • DNz15′s

No Kobe.. what are you thinking?!

  • http://bugmarley.com Bug Marley

    Electrostimulation sounds, uhm, stimulating.

  • KobesBestFriend

    any snipers in the room?

  • http://pickandroll.tumblr.com/ airs

kobe should know better. he aint getting any younger.

  • lexluther703

Lol @ this clown. You think skipping out on testing makes you tough? That don’t mean sh–. He’s trying to be all dramatic, so that IF he has a big performance the world will point to how ‘tough’ he is and how he plays through pain. This dude is the fakest athlete of all time.

  • Omnixyience

    ^^LOL

You think you know better than him?!
Have you played multiple injuries in your
life!? Or your just keep playing the villain
like your name to attract LA fans. Who’s the clown now!?

  • vtrobot

If Kobe does have a great game, can we talk about his crutches for the next several years like some have done with Pierce’s wheelchair?

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

Paul Pierce’s wheelchair thing was the most overly dramatic and fakest ish ever. Nothing will top that.

  • toinefan88

He won’t test it bc he doesn’t want ppl to know he’s hamming it up.

  • rand33p

why are people still questioning Kobe’s decisions here? The guy knows his body a lot better than most of you out of shape bums AND dude has enough rings to slap ur momma… eboy, ur a goof of massive proportions

  • rand33p

    pierce wheelchair <

  • vtrobot

people are questioning it bc there’s a good chance that he’s going to play when he shouldn’t because he’s too “tough” to sit out a playoff game. it’s obviously bad enough if he doesn’t want to get the clear result that will allow the staff/coach to tell him that there’s no way he’s playing. we’re talking about one of the deepest teams in the L. he can’t rely on his teammates for one game? you call it toughness, some of us call that a weakness. not trying to sh*t on the dude too much as he is one of the GOATs, but he acts like a spoiled kid a lot of the time.

  • OEasy

    Grant Hill, anyone?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

I’m convinced that SLAM set up a subscription service to mentally challenged homes throughout the USA.

  • flash

Kobe’s really though. he may be playing in the pros but he still got the grit of a street baller. ankle sprains are nothing we play through the pain just because we love to play basketball period. much respect to kobe for that.

  • bull22

@morgan, i see your point, but unless you have seen kobe bryant play alot and watch his antics over the years like i have, you would understand. this is same guy that said he was afraid was going to prison, so if he was really hurt and afraid, believe me its getting checked…

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

The fact that Kobe has to gut out an ankle injury against the FREAKING HORNETS should have Lakers fans angry.
How did y’all get here? The HORNETS are a one man band. And while that one man is amazing, it’s a damn shame that the highest salaried team in the NBA can’t stop this team even without Kobe.
    Shame on them.

  • hambone

just another “i wanna be like mike” move from kb24,expect a “mike-esque” flue game with kobe holding his ankle after every fade away and needing help coming off court at time outs.Expect a very very aggresive Kobe to score 40+

  • http://theurbangriot.com The NUPE

This is plain stupid. No reason not to get the test done and see what can be done to help the sitation. At worst he’ll find out it’s sever and be able to make a rationale decision if he should play or not without risking greater harm. At best, he finds out it’s not too severe and they can put some form of plastic arch support in his shoe to help relieve some of the pain (Like Joe Dumars had in his shoe after he had some kind of foot injury when they won the chip). Even is something this ‘simple’ can’t be done to help, you never know unles you get the test done so they can see exactly what the problem is. And yes, ofcourse there is the chance that Kobe is faking the entire thing as either a way to lull the Hornets into getting over confident, or as some believe, just to help his own ‘legacy’ (which by some of the comments, is doing just that).

  • bull22

@hambone, yep, yep and yep. its called the MJ syndrome….. hahahhahahhahahahhahahhaha

  • Kadavour

stop the Mike comparison. Dude played an AMAZING game with the flu. Kobe’s played the last 3 seasons in their entirety with a major injury. No one in the game’s history has performed at his level with his injuries. Dude defines warrior.

  • dsleepy

i don’t care how talented he may be, if he only has one leg and he still tries to play “kobe ball” (aka dribble straight into three defenders and take a fade-away shot) he will ultimately hurt his team. i bet if he sat out, gasol, odom, and bynum would be more aggressive and lakers would actually clobber the hornets like they should’ve been doing all along. i respect the competetiveness, but there are certain times when you gotta be smart enough to listen to the brain, even if the heart says something dif.

  • ohgeefreeks310

why dont we just talk about our daily papercuts?

  • bashmo

I hope he don’t plan on guarding CP3 with a bum ankle..I mean Chris has been blowing by Kobe on isos all series. It’d be best if he got all the possible treatment.

  • Michael Dimez

got to love kobe he knows how bad the injury is. he realizes they do test people will find out bout the injury so he keeps it on the wraps. So that hes the only voice that keeps him from plating ball. Kobe Bryant is the best BASKETBALL player in the WORLD

  • JTaylor21

Since when does a simple finger injury that usually lasts only about one week become playing with a “major” injury for the past 3 yrs?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

I’ve got to agree with Taylor….since when does a finger injury of any kind, constitute being classified as a “major injury”. This is comparable to a torn ACL/MCL? Reconstructive knee surgery? Fractured ankle? Slurp…slurp….FINISH ON YOUR FACE!!!!!!!!!!! Poor Kobe….a fanbase of dumba*ses.

  • unrel

wait.. so let me get this straight from some of you.. he hurt himself.. so can show how tough he is to be dramatic and to be like mike?.. you guys aren’t serious are you?.. please tell me those comments are cause you hate kobe on some imagined “personal” level and not because of his basketball attributes.. i don’t care who you’re a fan of.. you HAVE to respect someone’s dedication to their craft

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

For the record, I don’t think Kobe is trying to play through this ankle sprain to try and get MJ comparisons. I think that’s silly.

  • Josh

I think this is actually a smart move. If there is something wrong he is going to play anyway but it will be on his mind. This way, since he would play regardless, he doesn’t have this injury in the back of his mind. Go Lakers!

  • http://www.double-technical.blogspot.com Zee!

I’m sure Kobe knows he doesn’t have many chances left to get ring #6. Why not go all out while you still have the chance? I’m just saying. How many players have had serious injuries and yet didn’t make them public, and kept playing. If this was early in his career, I think he would’ve tried to play but would’ve relented. Now, with what is at stake, his pride may push him through. It might also be his undoing……

  • http://klatschendom.wordpress.com/ Speedy

    @kadavour
You know that his finger injury would already be history if he treated it the right .

  • http://klatschendom.wordpress.com/ Speedy

    way

  • http://klatschendom.wordpress.com/ Speedy

    way.

  • jay

EBOy is a silly hater. I´ve been reading about your kobe bashing for about, oh, 13 seasons now, acting like he knows why kobe is doing this or doing that. Quit your whining weanis!

  • http://klatschendom.wordpress.com/ Speedy

if he treated it the right way.

  • http://klatschendom.wordpress.com/ Speedy

    AARGGGHH damn computer.

  • the truth

lol eboy clownin on u fools

  • James

Paul pierce wheelchair was already topped by Kobe acting like someone hit him with a metal baseball bat when he slid on the plastic part of a chair. I thought dude had a spinal cord injury or something. Kobe is just trying to outdo himself. What a warrior.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

I’m not hating on Kobe….just his loyal idiots.

  • Eddie

Bull22 just messin’ cuz he knows just how terrible his bulls actually are. Lakers in 6.

  • flipnoyce

Play on HOBE, your light is slowly dimming so you feel as though you must do this. If your on the court your on the court no excuses!!! This situation right here will never be like the MJ’s flu game,it is more like ZEKE or The Chief Parish. These two were seriously limping on one leg and played like a TRUE WARRIOR! KOBE says he had played with so many injuries, name 3 not including his butter finger? Maybe it aint all that serious, why would you even denied a simple test that’ll cost you nothing! Damn I hope CP3 goes for the other ankle. I’m tired of this dude being so over confident.

  • flipnoyce

Cosign James @2:45, Dude act as though he was hit by that chair, he barely nip the corner on slow motion. Dude needs to take some serious acting lessons from Jack Nicholson. Hobe should of had his head wrap up to make it even believable, LMAO!

  • unrel

^what’s wrong with over confidence in competitive sports?… bottom line.. i think Zee! said it best.. he’s at the tail end of his career.. if this could possibly be your last time.. would you let an injury get in your way?

  • robb

I don’t approve this, but I’m just a fan. He’s the one who’s risking his health, his team and his chances of winning a sixth. He’ll do things his way like he always has.

  • mj23

no this no confidence he knows he is all right he he needs no mri he doestn want people know thas he has no injury and how can you tell that a gut is warrior when he screams every time when he goes to the basket kobe is not warrior kobe is a diva

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Jordan broke his foot, came back the same year, and beasted out in the playoffs. Just for the record.

  • http://slamonline.com The Ambassador

@mj23 yea so do the rest of the NBA players yell when getting to the basket whats your point let me guess just hating.
