Lakers Defend Pau Gasol’s Toughness

After Amar’e Stoudemire joined millions of others who have called the Laker big a softie, his teammates and coaches came to his defense. ESPN has the quotes: “Lakers forwards Odom and Ron Artest were informed of the latest talk against Gasol as they changed in the locker room before Tuesday’s game against Utah. ‘Pau got moves. He don’t have to be hard. That’s why he got us,’ said a shirtless Artest as he flexed his chest and arm muscles. ‘How are you soft and average 10 rebounds?’ chimed in Odom. Gasol is sixth in the league in rebounds per game this season, averaging 10.2 boards to go with his 18.9 points per game scoring average. Artest didn’t let the moment pass without throwing a zinger back at Stoudemire. ‘Amare posed on the front of [a magazine] butt naked!’ Artest said. ‘OK, is that tough?’ An unclothed Stoudemire appeared in the ESPN the Magazine’s annual ‘Body Issue’ in October. Jackson offered a simple solution for Gasol to shed the soft label. ‘Win another championship,’ Jackson said. ‘Just go out and do it again. That keeps people quiet really quick … The perception of this tall, lanky guy and how he plays the game may appear that way, but he somehow has a knack of getting those 20 points and 10 rebounds, night in and night out,’ Jackson said of Gasol, who played Tuesday despite suffering a bone bruise in his right knee Sunday against the Nuggets. ‘He’s a pretty amazing athlete and the tenacity is there. He’s a tenacious guy. He wants to win and it’s evident the way we’ve played since he came on this team.’”

to answer Ron’s question….be 7’1″ with a much longer wingspan….that could get it done

  • Red Star

How many rings does AS1 have? Lol

  • T-Money

i mean, even phil has called him soft. again, being soft and talented/productive are not mutually exclusive.

  • Riggs

kevin love averaged 21 and 15 does that make him tougher than pau?

Stop calling him Gasoft! Leave him alone! rofl

  • Drew

I really don’t think Pau Gasol is losing any sleep over this. Dude is a 2 time NBA Champ going for a 3rd try right now. He’s an All Star, International MVP and Champion. He averages a 19 and 10 for the season. All these people talking smack about him, such as Amare, needs to add a little more to their resumes and achievements before speaking. Phil can call his own players soft all he wants cause he earned that right with 11 Championships. No one else should be saying sh*t about Pau Gasol.

  • Towelie

To put it in lame man’s terms, you can call them finesse players.

  • Towelie

That is the Lakers are a finesse team…and then Ron Artest.

  • mike

    lmao off at artest’s comment

Either he’s soft making Kobe the GOAT carrying this bunch to 3 chips in a row or he’s tough and the Lakers then are one of the greatest teams of all time. take your pick haters.

  • http://http//portlandfan1203.blogspot.com Karley

He is a softie he has Kobe on the team Kobe misses so much its easy to get a few easy rebounds per game. Go Blazers!

  • http://http//portlandfan1203.blogspot.com Karley

    @Tina Turner
you out of your mind?? 2 championship rings dnt make them the best of all time.
Either Kobe is a little f** who shoots to much or Pau is the softest center in the NBA.
    Take your pick HATER!

  • Remo Williams

I dont get what the big deal is… he’s an 18 and 10 player, night in, night out, 2 time defending champ with another title run in his sights. Would you trade all that in for the “tough” label? Id stick with champ.

  • http://www.twitter.com/dfrance21 dfrance21

I hate Gasol, I think he’s soft a flopping whiner and looks like and looks like a baby ostrich covered in afterbirth.

BUT WHO CARES, he will drop 20 and 10 on your favortie “tough” big man and thats all that matters. People kill me with all this tough talk nonsense. They diss KG and call him a fake thug, they say Gasol is soft all while they watch them in the Finals every year. Get a grip!

  • unrel

i guess soft equals skilled.. in this new generation of players and hoops fans.. maybe kareem was soft shooting one handed, over the head jumpers all day long..

  • Lakers Fan Forever

At The End Of The Day The Lakers Have 16 Titles And How Much do the knicks have oh okay ! And pau gasol has how much more rings the amare 2 oh yeah that’s right ! And he really should be talking last time I checked he’s the one about to break into tears when he is losing and has a bad attitude when he’s losing but when he gets a simple and he wanna slam his chest yeah okay ! Sit you ass down ! Before the knicks you were unknown so stfu ! And whens the last time the knicks won a championship huh? Aand gasol isn’t soft to be a back to back champion ! That’s says it all !

  • Parker

@Karley. I dont have to read your name to know your a woman. Just stay in the kitchen if your gonna call Gasol the softest Center in the NBA when hes really a power forward that goes harder than Camby (the Blazers center if you dont know) And Kobes just a little F** who shoots too much? Maybe you forgot hes kobe bryant. He has more achievments as a player than the entire blazers team. Dont make such asinine comments on an article that contridicts the point your making especially when your point is that your jealous of the lakers. 20 points 10 rebounds ill be the 31891 person to say that on here in case you didnt see that before

  • http://nobulljive.com Enigmatic

@Parker – The f*ck does someone being a chick have to do with whether or not they possess any basketball knowledge?
I know ladies that would make your knowledge of the game look like Bob Barker’s knowledge of twitter.

  • Neauxera

I guess people forget when Pau was in Memphis and Amare was in Phoenix and those playoff series when Amare was straight doin’ Pau! Yea Gasol has rings but hell so does Jordan Farmar and Shannon Brown! But as far a Bynum goes, I’m gonna need him to play a full season and not get hurt every 30 or so games before he starts tweeting

  • Dagger

“Yea Gasol has rings but hell so does Jordan Farmar and Shannon Brown!”

Wow, such disrespect for Gasol. He’s one of the most skilled players in the league, period. Great moves, good rebounding, fantastic passing. He’s a surprisingly good defender who’s done a great job on players like Dwight Howard and routinely has the highest or second-highest PER on his team. His coming to the Lakers transformed that team from mediocre to the league’s best . . . fact is, the Lakers just don’t win without him. Gasol is an amazing player and while he’s no Alonzo Mourning he’s nowhere near as soft as: Bosh, Amare, Boozer, Aldridge or any of those young power forwards.

  • Michael

Memphis never played Phoenix in the playoffs.

  • knickzvet82

Is this a new statistic? SGPS-soft games per season.

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

Is Pau soft? Not totally, but he’s definitely not tough. I think the only players who would be allowed to call out Pau as being soft or not would be Garnett or Timmy. Once I hear it from one of them, the criticism becomes valid.

  • http://www.acb.com A l a n

last time they met in playoffs (last year) Pau ate this moroon… so this is just a joke, like Amare’s defense.

  • Michel, holland

The Knicks are better now Anthony has arived. Amare is
a good PF. I dont get it why he has too make those silly comments. Pau Gasol is great.
I am just a great basketball fan with a lot of love for the game. I didnt liked it that the Lakers won back to back championships but you got too give them credit. they did deserve it.
