Lamar Odom: ‘Our Worst Game of the Year. By Far’

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

For about three-and-a-half quarters last night, the Los Angeles Lakers and Utah Jazz played a basketball game that was so ugly, people were forced to recall the equally hideous NCAA title game from two nights ago.

The ending to the game was drama-filled and somewhat well-played, as the talented rookie Gordon Hayward (22 points, 6 boards, 5 assists) outdueled Kobe Bryant, while Bryant — after having tossed in a couple of critical three-pointers late — threw the ball away on the game’s final possession.

Afterwards, the Lakers could offer very little in the way of explanation for their lackluster play in the loss, and Lamar Odom called it their worst performance of the season.

From the OC Register:

“Nothing to break down. … This wasn’t us.” Odom did acknowledge the Lakers’ existence long enough to say: “This is our worst game of the year. By far.” Odom told reporters: “Don’t get intricate in your writing. Played bad. Really bad. And it’s time to move on.”

When told that Odom had cited it as the worst game of the season, Andrew Bynum laughed and thought of the game that many Lakers fans likely already have: at Cleveland on Feb. 16. But Bynum then added about this loss to the visiting Jazz, which previously lost at home to the 21-victory Washington Wizards: “Definitely top three.”

The Lakers’ loss wasn’t just unsightly, it was also quite costly.

Thanks to their win in Atlanta last night, the top spot in the Western Conference is now all but assured for the San Antonio Spurs, as their magic number is down to just two games.

Does Lamar forget that loss on Christmas?

  • http://.com Cheema

Kobe choked….again. And after the game he had the nerves to say he should have been more aggresive and took more shots. Kobe, you mean to tell me dat you want to go 10-27 again and shoot 2-8 in the crucial 4rth. It just amazes me how overrated this guy is, not on offence but on defence aswell. He couldn`t stop Gordan Hayward?

  • RobbieJay

no caboose, because “thoses games dont count”

  • http://.com Cheema

    Kobe choked……again.

  • http://www.slamonline.com c_cantrell

hayword played possibly his best game of the year so far while the lakers.. well.. they just pretty much sucked

  • http://www.dimemag.com Royal

People are always prisoners of the moment, just redeem yourselves tonight.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

The Spurs will soon cement their bid for the top overall seed. They’ll nail down home-court throughout the real season.

  • DPSMITH

THE JAZZ JUST WON THE NBA CHAMPIONSHIP.THATS WHAT THE FEELING IS IN SALT LAKE. WE WILL GRASP AT ANYTHING.

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

I had the incredible disfortune of attempting to sit through this one…..this is one of those games that you know as a Laker fan, you just don’t want to see…especially coming into the playoffs…..safe money though, Kobe ain’t havin none of that tonight

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

no this loss was much worse, dudes just decided not to car about playing

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Come on Spurs. For some reason, I think it would be a huge boost for the Lakers and blow for the Spurs if L.A. got that number one spot because of how far in front the Spurs were most of the season, and how poorly the Lakers played at times. It would just validate everything the Lakers did.

  • Omnixyience

    @Cheema, LOL!
overrated!? LMAO, dare may I say you have also a nerve to say that on Kobe after all his accomplishments and to think you’ll judge his career on that game!? regular season game!? SMH!!!

  • Lloyd

Kobe was being Kobe again last night. The shots he was trying to force were ridiculous. He got a couple to go sure, but c’mon.I laughed when he stared at his hands at the end of the game, kind of like he was blaming them! Play like that in the playoffs, and you’re going home mamba… Hell play like that tonight and Monta is gonna slay you!

  • DPSMITH

Don’t get me wrong Kobe is a great player, but with his terrible performance and choke at the end of the game he will never be on the same level as Jordan.

  • Riggs

first your teammates, then your coach, then the refs and now you blame your HANDS?!?

  • samo

kobe seems to have games like this alot more than usual. He puts up shot after shot bc he cant see any body else on the team bring them to victory. He is so overrated, continues to shoot lakers out of games

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Caption for photo of Kobe looking at his hands: “Which hand gets to wear all 5 rings tonight?”

  • http://shinefluid@aol.com just bcuz

im not even a laker fan but uh……count the rings man!! every player every team has bad games but when it matters most only the great 1s come thru

  • Anthony

u make some …u win some…… youe even choke sumtimes… but dats just how it goes

  • http://shinefluid@aol.com just bcuz

    @antohy WORD

  • IliganBoy

@ cheema. hey check your spelling. haha.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Sergio

I just wish that people like Cheema where commenting during the whole season. The Lakers have a bad game and now she comments? SMH

  • DPSMITH

MR ORANGE FOREVER. This is’nt about five rings this is about him wanting to be in the same light as Jordan. He will never be as great. The steeler nation tried to cover up big bens disaster in the super bowl by quoting, COULD YOU IMAGINE PLAYING WITH 6 RINGS, IT’S AMAZING HE DID AS GOOD AS HE DID. DEAL WITH IT ORANGE MAN, KOBE AT TIMES IS SELFISH AND IGNORANT BUT STILL HE REMAINS BETWEEN THE THIRD AND FITH BEST PLAYER EVER.

  • tomtom

All these newbies on this site really piss me off. Its as if a bunch of 14 yr old kids just decided to bombard the comments section as of late. Some of these comments are beyond stupid, purly moronic. Its not asif ive always got on with everybody on here but atleast they were even worth arguing with. And its not just this article, i think i may just start to abandon the comments section all together. Shame though.

  • http://nba.com EJ

Shut up people. Kobe has played over a thousand games, and you judge him by this one game. Seriously? Like MJ never choked in his career.

  • DPSMITH

TOM TOM, post one of your comments regarding the game. I would like to read it. Also my comments about Kobe are not based on just one game.
Phil Jackson who I feel is the best coach ever has also expressed these same opinions of him.

  • DPSMITH

    EJ
THIS IS’NT ABOUT ONE GAME. KOBE WILL NEVER BE AS GOOD AS JORDAN.
JORDAN CHOKED BUT NOT TO THE MAGNITUDE KOBE HAS.
I HAVE ALOT OF RESPECT FOR KOBE BUT THE BOTTOM LINE IS HE SHOULD NOT EVER BE MENTIONED IN THE SAME BREATH AS MJ.

  • unrel

kobe’s overrated?.. kobe choked?.. okay guys.. lakers have the 3rd best record in the league right now.. who cares?

  • Feez22

I think the bigger thing in this picture is that gordon hayward outplayed kobe both on offense and defense… cut the kid some slack

  • tomtom

Dpsmith other than the fact that i never like to get into the kobe/mike debate (which is pointless) i actually wasnt refering to your last comment which i think was right on the money, even being a laker fan. It is a little harsh to say kobe choked, he had a bad night but actually kept LA in it in the 4th, the fumble was inexplicable but i doubt it was a choke moment…As for my take on the game, Pau dissapeared, Kobe took some bad shots, defensive lapses and turnovers cost us the game and finally Bynum should have been rewarded for his hustle with some crunch time minutes…oh and haywood can PLAY. lol

  • tomtom

My bad let me make my point more clear. SOME of the more recent commenters suck.

  • jimmer

Kobe had a bad game, I remember watching games where Jordan stunk etc etc blah blah blah.
In Michael Jordans first 11 full seasons (obviously injured ’86, out of most of ’95) he won the scoring title 10 TIMES. That’s a 90+% success rate. He won 6 TITLES, that’s better than a title every other season. He won 5 MVPS, the DPOY was 10 TIME ALL NBA and 10 TIME ALL defense. And never lost a finals series. Kobe Bryant has never, and therefore now can never, achieve that level of dominance.

Can somebody please tell me Kobe Bryant’s equivalent stats in his first 11 seasons as a starter? I will allow you to discount his rookie year, for good measure. PS responses from 12 year olds/idiots claiming that the NBA was garbage/useless ‘in Jordan’s day’ will be duly laughed at.

  • http://shinefluid@aol.com just bcuz

nobody is saying kobe is jordan. jordan is the GOAT!! but kobe is a great player and has been a great player for years now and its time ppl recognize his achievements and what he has dont in his career. like with all great talents you gonna miss him when he is gone believe it or not. hell i used to hate reggie miller with disgust and sometimes i think “mann i miss hating reggie miller” lol but only cause he was great at what he did

  • DPSMITH

tom tom, good blog, best of luck in the playoffs. off to surgery.

  • jimmer

@just bcuz – I agree with you; the polarity of my comment was a bit much I think. Kobe is a very good basketball player who has achieved an enourmous amount in his career. I think the Jordan/kobe comparison requires a yes/no answer, which kobe is always gonna be on the ‘no’ side of. We (me) too often see the ‘not Jordan’ and forget the ‘is kobe’. 5 rings, one of the best guards ever to play the game, usw.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgxkdSMUkk0 shooter10

This loss won’t prevent L.A. from a 3 PEAT!!!! They are the type of team to dominate in the playoffs. KOBE = G.O.A.T.

  • http://http//portlandfan1203.blogspot.com Karley

Kobe isnt that good. Yeah he has an incredible shot but defense has to be in the package and it wasnt there. The rookie Gordan Hatward scores 22 on Kobe.. Thats embarrassing.. Seriously Kobe=OVERRATED

  • OvaChiken in G Major

HA HA at the MAMBA !!

  • JL

you could tell kobe was trying to outsmart the kid with his moves, but seems like hayward watched and studied his tape diligently. it definitely loooked like kobe had no respect for him or the team, resulting in a loss where the lakers played like… terrible.

  • http://none.com L8k3r5

Kobe did not choke cheema. He simply lost the ball. 99% of the time that won’t happen with Kobe. Choking would be badly missing the shot. Did you even see the game? I bet all you did was watch the highlights. He tied the game 85-85 on a tough 3 pointer. Quit hating.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

Cheema just got the MVP award for trolling on slamonline.

  • flipnoyce

Beat the Lakers once shame on you, beat the Lakers twice shame on them, tonight Lakers got beat again. HAHAHAHAHA classic Kobe Mr. Ballhog. I wonder what the excuse today is. I really hope he’s not using that butter finger of his as an excuse, thats been a decade old scapegoat of his lame and unproductive performances…..

  • flipnoyce

And when I say unproductive I really meant losses!

  • http://www.fiba.com Darksaber

    Umm, not really, Mr. kardashian.
Making the warriors look like defensive juggernauts tonight was also quite the achievement.

  • ogog

gordon hayward is as solid as a rock !

  • http://slamonline.com Ugh

NOW THAT ALLEN IVERSON IS OUT OF THE LEAGUE THE ONLY THREADS WITH ALLCAPS ARE THE LAKERS ONES.
