LeBron James and Erik Spoelstra’s Relationship Growing

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

When things in Miami started off this season in what some thought was disastrous fashion (with the Heat struggling to stay above .500), head coach Erik Spoelstra’s job seemed to be at risk.

Many believed — thanks to a few telling moments, both on and off the court — that Spoelstra and LeBron James could not co-exist.

Of course the Heat eventually got their act together, and as the newly-assembled super team prepares for its first Playoff run together, Spoelstra and James say that their relationship has never been better.

Fox Sports takes a look:

“I think the last few weeks it’s been a lot more comfortable,” Spoelstra said. “We’ve been communicating a lot more.”

“It’s definitely a process, and I think me and Coach Spo are learning each other as we speak,” LeBron said. “It’s not always going to be a bed of roses. We know that. There’s going to be times when Spo don’t like me and I don’t like Spo. That’s just how it is. But we’ve got to have each other’s back no matter what’s going on.” LeBron said the part about not always liking each other good-naturedly, and with a knowing smile, and therein lies the change: The respect is now real.

“Spo and my relationship is still growing, still growing, and we thrive on the pressure and we thrive on the hatred that’s been directed at our team,” [James] said … “I know there’s a lot of pressure on all of us, including coach Spo, but at the end of the day we’re all in it together,” LeBron said.

The postseason is where relationships and personal bonds are truly tested, something LeBron James and Erik Spoelstra are well aware of.

Over the next two months or so, Miami’s superstar forward and his once-embattled coach will have plenty of opportunities to prove just how far their partnership has come, and more importantly, what the future may hold.

“You got each others back?” Meaning what? Does it mean that even tho you have a huge ego you will honor the 100 million dollar contract?
    Oh LeBron, you’re so…

  • Justin

And that’s what we call job security…not that there should have been any danger of him losing his job in the first place

    That’s good.

I wonder how Mike Brown is doing these days.

  • T-Money

BigL, i’m not really sure what angle you’re trying to reach here. should he have said that they DON’T have each other’s back?

When the Heat get sweated EARLY in the postseason this love affair will end soon!

@Cizzo: Agreed, and it will end. Erik Spoelstra is likely “let go” after a monumental HEAT CHOKE against the NY KNICKS.

Say what you want about Lebron, but the best coach he’s had in his career is Paul Silas. Imagine if he’d had Pat Riley or Phil Jackson in his corner his whole career, like some other superstars…

pat reily will put his firstborn son in critical condition so eric spo has to leave to ” spend more time with his family” like svg

Would be nice to see N.Y. do something though.

It would be nice to see Mars right for once, just not this time. Go Knicks!

Obviously every player is going to say they have a good relationship.. Seriously yjis is no news at all no player is going to say they have a bad relationship with their own coach. Blazers are the closest team and they have the best fans.
    Go Blazers

  • Bryan

Do you suppose it was Spo who went to bail out Bron’s mom after she got popped for slapping that valet?

And maybe its cool with him but why in the world would someone be okay with being called ‘Spo’

@Karley. Im a huge Blazer fan. But when u say that the Blazers have the best fans, it offends me 2 a certain point. Do u not remember when Bonzi, Sheed and Damon were there? And when we weren’t winning? Do u remember how the Rose Garden was? It was damn near empty. And then when we started winning again all of a sudden Rip City is back. Rose Garden was selling out. Where were those “fans” when it wasn’t all gravy? A lot of the so called”Blazer fans”r a bunch of hipocrites. I hate 2 say it but its tru

But I do give much props 2 those fans who stuck w/blazers. Blazers did suck during those yrs. No question. But still. If ur gonna call urself a fan of a team, u stick w/them tru the thick AND the thin. Thru all the effin drug charges and embarrassment that they put r city and r state in. It wasn’t easy by any means no doubt, but u still do it

LBJ: “He and DWade needed to know it’s all about me. I’m glad that is now the case.”

SPO: (like the kindergarten teacher in Half Baked)”I’m somebody’s b–ch.”

T-money. No, no. It’s just he’s pointing out the obvious. Like it’s a plus that they have the same goal. I mean, they’re all just peices of a team puzzle. Granted, I am i tad vague here. I’m just so AntiBron right now.
