NBA Players Vote Kobe Bryant as Most Clutch

Among fans and media, the debate continues to rage, but for NBA players there hardly seems to be any disagreement — the vast majority want the ball in Kobe’s hands with the game on the line. Reports Sports Illustrated: “WHO DO YOU WANT SHOOTING WITH THE GAME ON THE LINE: Kobe Bryant, Lakers 74%; Kevin Durant, Thunder 8%; Dwyane Wade, Heat 3%; Ray Allen, Celtics 2%; Dirk Nowitzki, Mavericks 2%. Based on 166 NBA players who responded to SI’s survey.”

Agreed. 2nd greatest clutch player ever behind mike.

  • andre anglais

Eat it, Lebron (and your entourage).

  • NJ4Life

Can’t help but notice no Melo.

  • rich

    no love for scalabrine?

  • http://nicekicks.com meloman2.0

No Melo= credibility gone…. i mean i understand kobe, ray allen and dirk… but Durant? he’s almost as bad in the clutch as Lebron

  • JTaylor21

    The numbers say otherwise.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

I got it covered guys, “Which 166 players were asked?!”, “Everyone pretty much decided Lebron wasn’t clutch as soon as the decision”, “No D Rose?!?!”, “Kobe misses more than he makes, Lakers groupies/sheep/fanboys/slurpers etc etc have selective memories”.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

Oh shh, missed “The numbers say otherwise.”

  • Hannes

Damn, where is my boy Melo… how many game winners he has shot this year?!?! cmon NBA players

  • http://www.nba.com/celtics lights out

i love Kevin Durant, but is he really a proven clutch player yet? odd to see him there and no melo or pierce.

  • http://nicekicks.com meloman2.0

well opinion is one thing… but stats prove that Melo has been the moct clutch player since he’s been in the league

  • mickfanning

A percentage survey was taken on this not too long ago on another website, of the 50 players they poled kobe was 47th on the list making only 21 percent of his game winner attempts, melo was at the top of the list at 56% !!.Kobes field goal percentage in clutch game situations came in at only 39%. If the ball is in kobes hands with the game on the line chances are you will LOSE that game, il try and find that pole and post it for you guys. I hate to sound cliche and say how overrated kobe is but well…..

  • Eddie

Who made these stats? Could it be the same people who used occult forces to make Jeffries fumble the ball to KG. Who made these stats? It’s them you know who cats. Divad Nrets

  • Playa

Co sign meloman 2.0… No DRose or Pierce? Durant is more clutch than Dirk and Wade??? WTF??? This “poll” has no credibility… None!!!

  • Eddie

    Oohgato Ku Murrigato. Ah lo.

  • Anthony

melo hit more gw plus durant……. ive seen him make one at that was against a team that play d3 defense and dirk misses alot too!!!!!

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

The players are correct. Kobe is and has been the game’s best closer… easily.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Angel of Stern

yeah how is melo not on this list? he would actually be my top choice

  • 2KInsider

Sounds like this stupid question was a waste of time and energy since the answer is in the stats. Why bother ask it?

  • monkeyball

The stats matter, but they’re not the only thing that matters. Who is better at getting to the foul line in clutch situations? Who can create his own shots without screens from teammates? Who commands such respect from opponents that teammates have more room to maneuver? Who has the ability to take over a game late and put the team in a position to win with a last-second shot?
Here’s the thing, Jordan does not appear at the top of all-time clutch FG% statistics. BUT HE WAS STILL THE MOST CLUTCH PLAYER OF ALL TIME!!!
I’m not a Kobe fan, but in a game situation I’d trust him to win the game for me, over Lebron, Ray Allen, Nowtzki, or Carmelo. In a couple of months, though, DRose might be the guy.

  • TSmoove

Melo and Kobe have been the most clutch players in the NBA since he came in the league in ‘o3 numbers dont lie

  • Messiah Supreme

Paul Pierce deserves to be named way before Melo. And for those that pick Melo, what clutch shots has Melo hit in the P.O.’s when it really mattered…

  • Messiah Supreme

Paul Pierce deserves some recognition. Much more than Carmelo. Sure, Carmelo is clutch. But when has he been clutch when it really mattered, in the P.O.’s? Exactly.

  • neaorin

    Derek Fisher got robbed.

  • http://pickandroll.tumblr.com/ airs

    jerry west

  • Anthony

drose had one clutch game against the PACERSSSSSS rreally… ****riders i see… MELO IS 1ST KOBE IS SECOND STATS DNT LIE WEA AINT TALKN BOUT RINGS

  • http://slamonline.com datkid

lbj isnt that bad in the clutch actually…he just can’t take the last shot. in the final seconds of the game though he can still makes alot of good plays. but yeah there’s nothing wrong with this. they aren’t saying these other guys aren’t clutch just that kobe’s even more clutch.

  • el_larsen

i ll take pdouble, and sugar ray

  • http://pickandroll.tumblr.com/ airs

anthony obviously hasn’t watched any bulls games this season

  • J Dilla

26 times Jordan miss game winning shots. U got to fail to succeed, so percentages doesn’t matter. Give me the players like kobe, wade, james, melo and rose, that’s willing to take the last second shot. I know Bron miss a lot of game winning shots, however he had the balls to take the shot, when most players run away from that situation, the great one’s embrace it. One of the most clutch player in playoffs history is Robert Horry. But he also played with some of the best players in the league, who put him in that situation to hit those shots. Sometimes being clutch is overrated…

Why people keep sh*tting on Mello is Beyond me, I still believe he’ll get his ring before LeBron does.

  • Playa

    @ dat kid…lol…lml… Really???

  • robb

@all the people here questioning Kobe’s ability: Yeah morons go and tell all those NBA players who voted for Kobe that they don’t know what they’re taking about. Don’t be stupid, they play with and against him, they know better than you. Shut up.

  • Red Star

    Kobe! Lakers 4 Life!!

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca/ niQ

    I would’ve voted Ray Allen.

  • http://Badnewzb8ller Badnewzballer

So you guys are pretty much saying, you’d rather have Melo than Kobe with the ball at the end of a game? I call bs! Haters gun hate!

  • http://Badnewzb8ller Badnewzballer

Melo is so clutch, dude can’t even make a simple foul to extend a game. What an idiot!

  • Lloyd

    co-sign J Dilla
I want to choose the player who fearlessly steps up and makes a J with the mentality that “this is just another shot that I’m gonna make”. Screw stats and all that, it’s an attitude. Melo should be on the list though, but I would put RayRay higher for sure, maybe even at the top spot dude’s got daggers for days.

  • yerrrrr

no pierce? who conducted this list, quentin richardson?

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Duhhh! why isn’t Melo on that list tho?

Melo not being on that list is almost as laughable as some calculator head saying Shawn Marion is top 5 clutch.

  • http://nobulljive.com Enigmatic

My top 3 for THIS YEAR would be 1. Melo, 2. Kobe, 3. Rose

  • Rugulose

I’m not sure why every poll or new useless stat (like most jersey’s sold) leads to a Kobe versus Lebron debate. Just because you have a favorite player does not mean he has to be good at every single aspect of the game. Remember Horry? He was and is probably more clutch than 99% of the league when he played, but no one considers him to be the greatest player of any era, or even a specific year. And guess what, he has more rings that Kobe, Lebron, Melo, Durant, Rose, and Wade combined. It’s an OPINION poll, take it for what it’s worth and quit getting your panties in a bunch!

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

    Co sign Enig

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Dirk, Pierce/Allen, Melo. Those are my top 3

  • MLK4Life

It’s not about stats. Who is the most feared guy when it’s winning time? Kobe. Period. The guys who play with and against him are the only ones whose opinions matter.

  • http://nba.com EJ

Kobe’s number 1, but no Melo at all? He’s should definitely be second. Also Rudy Gay made like 4 game winners this year.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I would rather win, then worried about whose intimidated. Just because guys see highlights of Kobe and know he’s a great player doesn’t mean they are right. They’re jobs aren’t to focus on whose the best at certain things throughout the league, their job is to be as focused on their team and what’s goin on with it and their role within it. They only see kobe 4 times a year, max. And if ya’ll don’t remember Kobe’s game winner swag is pretty much dependent on the shot against phoenix in the playoffs in 07, and the 6 he made last season. Since then? he missed one in a game 6 against OKC, missed 1 against Phoenix in game 5, infact searching for Kobe game winners the most recent one I can find is from March 9, 2010 against the Raptors. That’s over a year ago.

  • MLK4Life

Clutch shots aren’t just those to win the game. Kobe hit a few clutch shots against the Kings last week. Melo has to be top 3 with Kobe and Ray.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

the pole is, “who do you want shooting with the game on the line” not who do you think can score at the end of games when its close. This is game on the line. Or game winners, atleast that’s what game on the line means to me.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

  • Heals

MLK – Kobe also missed 4 shots in a row right before that 3, Artest had to put back his last second airball to save Gm5 vs Phx, Gasol had to put back his last second airball to save Gm6 vs Okc…

  • Heals

I’m just saying it is not so cut and dry. While Mamba rightfully deserves to top the list, the margin between him and the other assassins isn’t as wide a disparity as some believe. I would be just as comfortable with PP, Ray Ray, Manu, Melo, CP3, Dirk, DW3, etc. taking the shot as Kobe…

  • http://www.rich-imaging.com Dutch Rich

I got Jeffries as my #1. He’s like the second coming of Jesus Christu, a real savior.

  • http://mheat BIG3KG

bullcrap melo is the most clutch kobe shoting is terible in the last 24 sec melo has the best %in last 24 sec kobe is even behind lebron!!
so i dont know what make those guy thinks he is clutch

  • http://mheat BIG3KG

and its not all about game winners it about 24sec last
    with game tied or losing

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nick Tha Quick

I am shocked, SHOCKED I SAY, that JTaylor21 disagrees with this!

  • http://slamonline.com AllDayEveryDay

Can’t believe NBA players are so ignorant.

i want melo shooting it melooooooooooo

  • smoove

im a celts fan but i would definitely have to give this to kobe, opposed to ray ray(even if my biased nature disagrees), because kobe can make his on shot better then ray can, in most cases ray needs a screen

  • http://www.realpriceperhead.com PPH Bookie Services

Kobe is great…but I’m just dont feel like he is the MOST clutch out everyone, hes just a big name

  • gabe

The haterade is hard to swallow today isn’t it. 5 championships and counting. NBA players know more about their game than you do hater.

  • bill

1.Kobe 2.Ray Allen 3. Melo. 4.Dirk 5. Durant…and yes kobe isnt far ahead of these guys in the last second shot although if i need a 3 then i def put sugar ray at the top

  • Doug

Not only that but I think Kobe’s actually the most clutch of all time. Look at the degree of difficulty in his clutch shots. A long, long 3-pointer or a fadaway jumper over a triple-team is inevitable when the ball’s in Kobe’s hands. And that’s with the broken finger and bad knees! The players have tasted the knives and they know better than any of us. And I believe that, yeah, he’s that far ahead of the pack.
