Rick Adelman Out as Head Coach in Houston

It’s not exactly shocking news — except maybe to some of his players, who for the most part have been publicly supportive — but Rick Adelman won’t be coaching the Houston Rockets anymore. Reports the Chronicle: “Rick Adelman, who led the Rockets to their only playoff series win in 17 years and a franchise record 22-game winning streak, will not return as Rockets coach, a person with knowledge of the decision said Monday. After consecutive seasons in which the Rockets failed to reach the playoffs, Adelman and Rockets general manager Daryl Morey failed to reach agreements on how they would continue to work together. In four seasons with the Rockets, Adelman had a 193-135 record, the best winning percentage (.588) of any coach in franchise history. He moved to eighth in NBA history in career coaching wins with 945. Adelman, 64, had expressed ambivalence about remaining in coaching, but said last week that he has not lost his desire to coach. He had been openly frustrated with decision-making during last season that led to a trio of trades over his objections that seemed designed to aid future seasons. ‘I’ve talked this over with my wife and we have a pretty good idea what we would do either way,’ Adelman said last week. ‘It’s OK either way. There are definite things I want to know if I were to have the opportunity to come back.’ In each of the Rockets’ previous coaching hires, they went with proven coaches — Adelman and Jeff Van Gundy — who had sat out the previous seasons. Former Cleveland coach Mike Brown, former Hawks coach Mike Woodson and Van Gundy could fit that pattern.”

  • TheBarberShop

PLEASE get rid of Daryl Morey!

  • Ryan

Morey is a joke….he has screwed up our team here in Houston with his so called “great decision making.” The day he leaves is the day we get back on track.

  • Anonymosdef

Hmmmm…What could Adleman do for the Knicks? Look into it Walsh?

WHAT THE F*CK MOREY?! Adelman is the best coach Houston has had in twenty years and you’re going to ship him out for MIKE BROWN? Get the f*ck out of here.
If Adelman had a stable roster from the beginning of the season the Rockets would have made the playoffs. I don’t understand HOW you can fire the man after the way Houston played after the All-Star break. What a freaking idiot!

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

I’ve defended Daryl Morey for a long time, but firing Adelman is probably the worst decision he’s ever made. Morey is a buffoon. The Rockets would be better off keeping Adelman and replacing Morey…

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

The ONLY coach I see being fit to replace Adelman is Jerry Sloan. F*CK, Adelman had the best win percentage ever with Houston and you cut him?! WTF!!!!!!

  • Riggs

Adelman probably had relations with morey’s wife. Yall know sean connery got game with the ladies.

  • RV

It wasn’t Morey firing RA…both sides came to this agreement…they want to rebuild and RA doesnt have time to coach a rebuilding team…RA had already said it would depend on the direction the team went after this season. Can’t blame either side for it..rebuilding is the best decision for the team.

  • RV

Also, if there was any “beef” here it was mainly between the owner and RA, not Morey. Ultimately both coach and GM do what the owner wants.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

The team was just starting to get into a rhythm, RV. This season WAS the rebuilding season. The Rockets are not an old team by any means, and they’re literally 1 center away from being a title contender.

  • majic

Bring him back to Sacto. The maloofs should have never let him go

adelman did as much as he could do. between injuries and roster changes, he did well to keep the team as successful as it was.

  • badnews

Sorry to hear that, although not a total surprise considering the way upper management reacts these days. We will always love you in PTown Rick.

His offensive schemes would really work well with the Kings, the Clippers, or the Magic…If he’s looking for a contender, Adelman would really help Orlando.

  • floe

    sign him up toronto please.

^ Damn, as both a Houston and Toronto fan Rick would be GREAT for the Raptors! This gets me almost as excited as I am pissed off.

  • el_larsen

if only he could go to the clips!!

  • uqk

    Go to heat…Adelman

  • dsleepy

behind phil and doc, i think adelman might be the third best coach in the whole League (possibly 4th behind Thibs). He is THE reason the rockets have been at all competetive the past few years. remember when they went on that 20-something game streak with half a mcgrady, half a yao, and a bunch of role players? if i was daryl morey i would’ve seen that and locked adelman in with a contract for the remainder of his natural life. that being said… RICK ADELMAN IF YOU ARE READING THIS PLEASE COME TO THE WIZARDS AND SAVE MY TEAM!!! GET IT DONE…GRUNFELD…?!

  • T-Money

doesn’t seem fair to can him after losing basically t-mac and yao to injuries and making a bunch of sideways trades. he was winning basketball games with that crappy line up.

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

Dsleepy, Popp is a much better coach than Doc. But yes, Adelman is 4th behind those 3.

  • RV

I agree they were just getting into a rythm…but this may end up paying off for both sides…RA needs a finished team, sure Houston can contend if they get a center, but thats easier said than done. Not a lot of capable centers out there to sign. A scrub won’t do. Chandler, jordan, gortat, something like that. It’s just not a good situation for RA. He wants roster consistency and there’s no guarantee they won’t have to trade away guys to get that center. And that could happen sooner or later. From what ive read RA was also against trading off Rafer, Battier, and brooks..and yet those trades worked out very well. RA will be better off in LA, miami, etc..
