Zach Randolph Inks 4-Year, $71 Million Extension With Grizzlies

As expected, Memphis rewarded Z-Bo with a large contract extension (he certainly earned his money in the Game 1 vs the Spurs.) From the Commercial Appeal: “Turns out that Zach Randolph’s Game 1 performance Sunday afternoon against the San Antonio Spurs came with added motivation. The Grizzlies’ forward is set to sign a four-year contract extension this week worth $66 million guaranteed with an additional $5 million in incentives, according to two sources with knowledge of the situation. Randolph’s agent, Raymond Brothers, and Griz general manager Chris Wallace agreed to a deal in principle late Saturday night, the sources said. Randolph is expected to sign the contract Monday or Tuesday with the Griz making an official announcement before Wednesday’s Game 2 against the Spurs. Within the past week, both sides agreed on financial terms that includes a player option for the fourth year. They were working through other clauses, including one that had to do with personal conduct. But Randolph, who turns 30 in July, hasn’t had any off-court problems since joining the Griz in 2009. Instead, he’s been one of the league’s top contributors in the community to go with career productivity on the court. Griz coach Lionel Hollins called Randolph the team’s most valuable player.”

Z-Bo! I’m glad he got his due. He’s been ballin’ his a** off. Pay the man!

This means MARC GASOL will most definitely be available as a RFA. It may be more difficult for MEMPHIS with all the money already committed to GAY, CONLEY, and now Z-BO to match offers for GASOL during the off-season.

Oooookaaay. So between the Mike Conley signing and this massive extention, is it safe to say the Grizzlies are trying to ensure that they won’t contend for years? Randolph’s work ethic disappears after huge extentions, Rudy Gay is locked in for 6 years with $80 million, and they are officially making it known that Mayo will definitely be on the move this summer…Oh, and I hope the players point to this team’s management decisions when the leagues keeps putting those $800 million salary reductions in their proposals. If the small market, poor attendance having Grizzlies can put nearly $200 million into THREE decent players, the league certainly isn’t bleeding cash like they’re saying they are.

Z-Bo has done everything he can to turn his image around and people are still underestimating the guy. Still, $71 million is a loooot of money, considering he’ll be an old man when it’s done. Good thing his game never really relied on athleticism, he should have a decent run.

Still too long and too much with an uncertain labor future. Hopefully Marc Gasol doesn’t get screwed.

Z-Bo will still be balling hard at 34, provided injuries don’t cripple him.

About $10 million too much IMO, but still… at least it’s four years, not six or seven. Looks like owners and GMs are finally starting to wise up a little bit.

Are they printing money in Memphis or something? Lol.

  • frenchtoast

They should have try to sign OJ first instead of average players like Conley or Gay.

  • Anthony

finnaly he has a home… hes 2 good to be shopped constantly despite never being an allstar… … and @frenchtoast……. OJ is a bum…. needs to improve…. dey was gon trade him

    Well deserved.

Happy for Randolph. Welcome to South Florida, Marc! :)

He def earned it but this still feels like overpaying a little bit. The L is hemorrhaging money? Bull.

@frenchtoast: you called Rudy Gay average… smdh man, Gay is an All-Star calibre player.

Also, I feel this is too much for only a four year deal. Z-Bo clearly doesn’t care about winning if he pushed for such a deal, Grizz must be banking on the new labor agreement reducing the amount they pay their other players or something, because these deals don’t make sense to me.

And the owners have been trying to sell us on the fact that they’re LOSING money. Way to go, Heisley.

  • truthteller

    Where is Rudy Gay?

  • DeeDre

Good. Zach Randolph deserves more work after Family Matters

  • Riggs

lol @ calling gay and conley average and then pulling OJ out your a**

  • Roc

Awesome – well-deserved contract for my man Z-BO. Cheers to Z-BO putting up 20 and 10+, and putting the Grizz in the playoffs for many more years to come! :) ))
