Dwight Howard: Orlando Media Trying to Push Me Out

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

Dwight Howard’s impending free agency, and the general belief that he won’t be a member of the Orlando Magic for very much longer, have been hot-button topics for a couple of years now.

After the Los Angeles Lakers were unceremoniously booted out of the Playoffs on Sunday, the rumors that Dwight was LA-bound went into overdrive. And Howard evidently hears about all of them, which is upsetting for the big fella.

Dwight Howard took to Twitter late last night to voice his frustration with the media, blaming the local paper for seemingly trying to push him out of town.

It’s something Howard claims the local press also did to Shaquille O’Neal before he left Orlando for Hollywood:

“Y does it seem like the writers of Orlando sentinel are tryna push me out of Orlando with dumb articles. It’s annoying. Can I enjoy my summer and get ready for next season in Orlando.

Pls. Same thing u guys did to Shaq. Smh

The reality is that the media in Orlando is actually quite pro-Howard; all you have to do is read most of the newspaper articles and blog posts to realize it.

Should Dwight Howard leave as a free agent next summer — or via trade during the 2011-2012 season — it won’t be due to the media, but that aspect will make for a terrific excuse. Best of luck to him trying to sell it, though.

Someone in the “how-to-influence-public-opinion-because-of-impending-free agency” meeting at his agency forgot to tell him to start deflecting blame AFTER the media-bullets start flying.

“same thing happened to shaq” Dwight- Stop comparing yourself to Shaq, and change your nickname. You’re nowhere near as good as a young O’neal. Also, stop whining.

  • Harlem_World

We all know he’s going to end up in LA (shaq reference wasn’t for nothing). Just a matter of what price.

I halfway agree with Dwight, although not about the Orlando thing. ESPN, with all their “insider” information, seems to be trying their hardest to promote the belief that Dwight is just begging to leave Olando for a “winning” team. Publicly, I don’t think he’s given any indication about wanting to play for another specific team. ESPN wants another Carmelo fiasco, so they can crucify him later if it doesn’t work out, or praise him if it does. That being said, I do think he leaves….. For Brooklyn of course ;)

  • EtheKnickFan

He stays in orlando No state tax. LA too much taxes for a broke state. NY nahhhh too much tax and too cold he hates cold. They are also thinking of changing name to Dwight, FL. All this is tru unless……Walsh makes it happen!(shout out to RunGun)

  • Kid viscious

He’s too good for Orlando…he needs to get up out of there so he can win more

  • kareem

D12 didn’t go to college. He doesn’t know how to read a newspaper or perhaps between the lines..

  • rich

this must be really annyoing, because of miami everybody has this paranoia that every good player wants to leave, no just get better players around them and damn the cost, i realize orlando has been trying but dwight isnt going to be a free agent for a long time, things could happen, i would think maybe chris paul or d will leaving is likely since they expire at the end of next year, the nets and hornets should be planning exit stratageies, not the magic, they need to worry about a ring

  • AD

this is his excuse when the they ask him why he left………. o well it will be nice to see him in NJ/BK **** SEAN CARTER for moving the team tho

  • http://www.hoopsvibe.com/features/overdribbling chiqo

actually dwight, they want you to stay. because newspapers spend less money to cover teams that aren’t winning. you being there means they keep their jobs.

  • elmaar

    orlando needs a better gm
    otis smith is not capable

  • http://www.slamonline.com Max

Tell SVG to f*ck off and trade you wing “threepoint shooters” for perimeter defenders.
    And get CP3!

  • robb

“same thing happened to shaq” Yeah and he left, Dwight knows he’s gonna leave too.

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca/ niQ

I see what you did there, Dwight. =P

  • dma

Maybe if he signed an extension it would be over?

Hey Dwight, Shaq took his team to the Finals before leaving.

  • JoeMaMa

“Just when I thought I was in….they PUUUUUUUSH me back out!!!”

  • robb

lol@1982 when did you start watching basketball? last year?

  • http://OrlandoMagic Marcia

Dwight Orlando will go no where without you they will be off the basketball map. I will have to follow you to another team and I like Orlando with you in it, with you not in it, it becomes a garbage team.

  • hoodsnake

So why doesn’t he sign an extension? Why would any player in their right mind wait for the new CBA to kick in and then sign? Its obvious he wants to leave

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Pretty sure 1982 was being sarcastic, lol…

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Dwight will end up keeping his talents in South Beach. But he’ll be playing in a Heat uniform.

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca/ niQ

Teddy. As unlikely as that sounds, it would still be pretty awesome.

  • http://www.nba.com Gman

Anyone get the feeling Max wants Bosh’s C@ck? lol every post “Like a Bosh”

  • the Dude

Howard’s new nickname should be “The Duck” if he sheds responsibility for losses and getting traded elsewhere.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Max

    @ Gman
    Asking questions…
    Like a Bosh..

  • Red Star

If young Shaq was Superman then Dwight is Superboy! No disrespect Dwight but it’s true and I hate Shaq as a baller! Like him as a person though.

  • jose

Bosh For Dwight Howard. . .Riley can do it! haha

  • 1982

Ok, fine. “Hey Dwight, Shaq took his team to the Finals before leaving TOO.” Is the mocking tone thick enough now?

  • RStevens

Otis Smith is probably going to package Gilbert Arenas with Howard, making the Bynum-Howard swap much more financially difficult for LA. They will have to package Bynum with Blake, Walton, Barnes.

  • Angela

The media is designed to influence desicions so dont worry about that – trust you have better things to concern yourself with. Play the game because you love the game. Help bring teammates around you that can shine just like you then the championship will come. Athletes and other celebraties are human just like the rest of us. I wonder how we would we really feel is someone was in our business everyday having it on tv, blogs, tabs, etc? Sad people have nothing better to do with their time. Try writing about real issues, poverty, hunger, taxes, awareness of charitable orgs that celebraties contribute to so that we the people become more involved. Now that would be story to read and talk about.

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca/ niQ

@Gman, I think he’s doing quite the opposite… Go search the video “Like a Bosh” and you should understand.

  • bull22

@max, that comment was pretty good. i think howard and cp3 would be a good fit. my opinion DWIGHT needs to create his own legacy with another excellent playe. great player and great attitude, i know the fans in orlando love him. great town, no to LA man.

Just wanted to say how sexy the new site looks

  • http://www.nba.com B23

D Howard going to LA real talk!!!!

  • http://www.slamonline.com unf*ckwitable

hey may be built like a god but Dwight seems like a b*tch to me.

  • http://www.angryarab.com Tariq

To be honest, although Dwight is one of the 5 best players in the league, there’s something about his demeanor that I find troubling. After tough playoff losses, he’ll be cracking jokes and smiling. When they went to the Finals, it was like he had made the all-star team for the first time and was kinda star-struck: “Look! There’s Kobe!” etc. In a way, it’s somewhat refreshing but it’s also too aw-shucks happy-go-lucky.

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

Screw ESPN for starting all these pointless rumors. Dwight has said he wants to stay in Orlando. The city and fans love him. He’s not leaving ESPN is to sports as FOX is to politics.

Off topic comment… like the new layout on da dis website but why is poll of the day in the middle?

  • mike

    Dwight….. shut up

  • http://www.tampax.com doyouwantmore

He’s too good for LA! He should go to a team where he can establish his own legacy. It’s like the guy who leaves a good girl for some skank who’s been around the block.

  • ManicD

@kudos: Dwight Howard is HEAD AND SHOULDERS OVER SH!@#HEEL ONEAL, BOTH ON AND OFF THE COURT. ONEAL was unhappy in Orlando from day one. He knew in High School were he wanted to be, and that’s where he went as soon as the opportunity presented itself. A little known fact (seeming unbelievable, but none the less true) He went to LSU cuz they had “Laker” colors. Orlando could have offered him Disney World and he still would have gone to LA. One sad fact in the case of Dwight Howard is, if Howard is done with Orlando…..Orlando will be done with the NBA. Anyone reading this…REMEMBER MY PREDICTION….Howard leaves Orlando….the Magic won’t last more than 3 seasons in Orlando. And UNFORTUNATELY Dwight will be blamed for the NBA leaving for good. Most Magic Fans who were here for the RISE & FALL of THE MAGIC during Shaqs stay, have only recently gotten over Shaqs departure. DWIGHT HOWARD was RESPONSIBLE for THEIR RECOVERY. THE FANS COULDN’T TAKE ANOTHER LOSS LIKE THAT…..AND ESPECIALLY NOT TO THE LA. LAKERS.

  • stupid

screw the media…dwight needs to do what is best and authoritative..hes the number one center in the league and he can control the way his game rolls like lebron

  • cmaglaughlin

If Dwight leaves, there is only one person to blame…DWIGHT! There are no guarantees in life other than paying taxes, dying and STUPID message boards! Hey Dwight, you’ve had a chance to show what you’ve got and you failed miserably against the Lakers in the Finals. You continue to think you’re a scoring machine, but all you really do is muck up the offense. You go through highs and lows at the free throw line, which prevents going to you at the end of a close game. You turn the ball over more than most politicians flip-flop. You always seem to fail just at the worst possible time during a close game. You don’t learn from your idiotic fouls and whining tantrums. You’ve never learned that passing off is a part of smart basketball and keeps everyone in rhythm to make those long threes. If nobody’s told you, yet, you ARE allowed to go after an offensive rebound. And lastly, if ANYBODY has been patient the last 7 years it’s been the Magic fans. Your off the court moral failures are catching up with your good civic reputation. Seems the rumor is you’ve put more than one bun in the oven. I can’t think of any other city and fans that would have been more perfect for you growing up into the MAN your God called you to be. If you leave for “greener pastures,” be careful where you walk. There’s a whole lotta dung out there!

  • Yaking

I agree with Dwight, I do think the media helped drive Shaq out of Orlando. Now the same people are writing stupid stuff again. Are you that hard up for something to write, pick things that are not personal. He is worth what ever money he can get to keep playing for the Magic. He plays hard most every night that there are games. He is a leader, and he leads by example. We need you Dwight, the Magic need more.

  • http://www.StayDwight.com Ryan Totka

Fans are doing everything they can to keep Dwight in Orlando with the campaign, http://www.StayDwight.com. The campaign encourages businesses to get involved by raising money for Dwight’s D12 Foundation. Help spread the word!

    Go Magic,
