End of the Line for Shaquille O’Neal?

Shaq spent much of what could his final season in the NBA on the bench or doing rehab from injuries, and it might just be time for him to walk away from the game for good. From the Boston Herald: “The Shaquille O’Neal chapter of Celtics history — his painful, premature decline — took another turn last night as the center sat out the Game 5 ouster against the Miami Heat, perhaps missing his last game as a Celtic and possibly in his career. The reason was the same as what limited O’Neal to three first-half minutes in Game 4 — chronic pain and stiffness in his right Achilles tendon and calf. No one wanted to say that this may be the end of a legendary 18-season career. He’s under contract with the Celtics at the $1.4 million veteran’s minimum for one more season. But some things can’t be helped. ‘I don’t know,’ [Doc] Rivers said of whether this may be the end for O’Neal. ‘It’s too early to talk about it. I’ve learned personally that you never try to make a decision in the heat of the battle. Emotionally you’re always going to make the wrong choice then. He’ll walk away for the summer and then decide what he wants to do. But this has been emotionally draining to him, more than you guys would know,’ said the Celtics coach. ‘He feels awful about this, because this is why he came here, to get to the playoffs and then play in the playoffs, and not being able to do that has really hurt him.’”

Get healthy big fella ur not done yet.

  • Yesse

I think he should retire, but if he loves the game too much, then he can do what he wants. If he can get healthy in the summer, i’m sure some team could put him to some use.

1 year deal to the heat. God I hope that doesn’t happen.

Anyone else think it would be awesome for him to be traded to the Magic so he can finish his career off in Orlando? I still think the real Superman has one decent year left.

I bet he’d like to catch Kobe

Shaq needs to be a man and go out the right way… Set aside his selfish ways and mentore a young player as a back up for bynum! Go back to LA and come off the bench teach bynum and gasol some of what he knows as a big be humble stay 2 years and be a veteran role player win 2 more rings and retire as a Laker where he belongs

Shaq looks like a man subdued. His fire and passion for the game were hurt by the mortality of his goliath frame, if not visibly, at least spiritually. The Big Everything can hang them up without shame; Shaq Forever.

Well hes going to try to get healthy over the summer. If that happens he’ll be back for next season

  • http://slamonline.com Ugh

Premature decline? 18 seasons is a premature decline?

  • bakers’-dozen

I think it’d be sweet if he signed for the vets minimum for some horrible team like the Wizards or Sacramento….nah, Minnesota, just to give hte fans something to root for.

He was very effective with the Celtics before the injury. If he can rehab and actually get to 100% over summer, I’d like to have him back for one more year and allow him to go out on his terms. A shortened season could benefit him.

based on how i’d seen him play the past several seasons, i was shocked at how well he played at times during this season. it would be a shame if this is how he has to go out. that’s a lot of weight to be carrying around for so long. thanks for destroying so many teams that i was rooting for. great career, big man.

  • Riggs

    shouldve lost some f*cking weight.

  • Fat Lever

How awesome would it be if he came back for one more year next year and dropped about 30 lbs in the offseason. Then again, Shaq has never been motivated by conditioning, so he should just leave.

  • 1982

Shaq to any team that needs a center for 2 weeks next playoffs.

  • KC

If shape get serious and drops some weight he could still be a quality contributer to a team. That is a huge”if” though.

  • shuref00t

Can’t wait to see him next to Charles & Kenny on TNT next season. It’s hard to lose weight and get into proper shape with his injuries, especially at his age and body frame.

shaq to the bulls! only for his jersey.

  • dsleepy

he’s done. loks like they paid him about $1.4 million too much. The signing that led Ainge to believe he could trade Perk. smh.

  • Groves

shaq is still a solid player these days, and he can help a team in limited minutes. but he’s 38, so to say his decline is premature is dumb, most players are breaking down before him

  • add

i wonder if the job as a cop is still open in miami

  • MikeC.

Give us one more year big man. Time to call up Tim Grover and see what he can do.

  • Red Star

I’m sure Boston is happy with Danny Ainge today!!!

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

He could go back on tour with Fu Schnikins… Always been a fan of Shaq (except while he was with the Lakers) Hope he gives us one more year, playing limited minutes on a contender..

  • durden

I dont understand one thing. if he wants to play why doesnt he lose weight? in phoneix he was slimmer and had a great year. his legs cant stand 400 pounds anymore. he can easily lose 60 pounds and be the biggest guy in nba. look at ray allen. he can play for 10 more years because he takes care of his body great. we want you back big fella, but cut the carbs for a year and do some yoga or something and you’ll be fine for aother year or 2.

  • bike

Give it up Shaq. Paying a guy 1.7 mill./year to do nothing but take up bench space, get overweight, and consume trainer’s time is an epic waste of money. And he still can’t shoot a free throw to save his life. What’s the point?

  • HAMMER

Personally I would like 4 him 2 retire. Its painful 2 c him b reduced 2 where he is now. Cuz i would hate 2 c him come back next yr and getting injured. Dont want 2 c him go out like Barkley or Mutombo did. But @ the same time I would like 2 c him give it 1 more shot. 2 go out on his terms. We’ll c tho. Wishin him the best of luck

  • ROBERT

    GEEZE…..have some pride Shaq….retire…I
have never seen a GREAT player go out like this.
Shaq has never stayed in condition, he only gave
    a full effort for 1 (his MVP) season…and @
39 yrs. old his bad habits have caught up with
him. I loved his personality but…it’s time
    to go

  • http://thosefishtacosarethetits.blogspot.com/ Chris_Griff_3

I hope he comes back for one more shot at 1825, allowing himself to go out on his own terms. Let’s go, Diesel. One more year in green.

  • fanatyc
