Jason Terry Intends to Outplay Thunder Bench By Himself

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

The Western Conference Finals begin tonight in Texas, pitting the upstart OKC Thunder against the veteran, well-rested Dallas Mavericks.

Star power in the matchup is of the high-wattage variety, but bench play may ultimately decide the winner of the series.

The Mavs’ explosive sixth-man Jason Terry knows how critical his play will be, and he’s more than a little sure of his ability to come through.

From ESPN:

Jason Terry outperformed the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year, Lamar Odom, last series. Now he goes up against “The Beard,” Oklahoma City Thunder second-year sixth man James Harden. But Terry, never one to think small or keep his thoughts to himself, is thinking big picture and talking about it.

“I’m trying to outperform their entire bench,” Terry said after Monday’s practice. “That’s what I do.” Surely, Harden and other Thunder reserves such as guard Eric Maynor and forward Nick Collison will find that interesting. “Whichever bench comes to play and outplays the other one,” Terry said, “the other team has the advantage.”

Terry is the leading bench scorer heading into the series on either side, so he’s entitled to feel confident.

James Harden and the rest of the OKC Thunder reserves will need to make Jason Terry regret his words if they are to eventually move on to the NBA Finals.

I want to see Harden run post ups all night on this dwarf.

Well, I guess there is an “I” in “Sixth Man”.

  • http://www.fiba.com Darksaber

Oh boy, i guess nearly two weeks without games plus a solid series against the Lakers (didn’t see you much against Portland ‘JET’!) Equals idiotic hyperstatements that your opponent will use as motivation.
    Thanks, dummkopf.

I don’t think he stould talk before he is gonna do the walk. He has been playing good, but looks like he is chewing a bit too much now. I doubt Thunder will leave him open in the 3 point area like Lakers did.

At least win a game first?

  • Klav

He’s big headed right now since they swept LA. But we all know he’d be nowhere if Dirk and the other guys weren’t there. He carries his load, but it’s almost as if he’s not attributing his success is completely because of his own work.

    So he’ll outplay Harden?

  • http://slamonline.com 1982

I like Terry. Play some D first though, this series isn’t about respective sixth men outscoring each other. The first one to talk trash probably shouldn’t be on the bench, either.

he must think that they gon easy 3′s just like the lakers gave them…i mean the lakers let em shoot wide open every game…. I cant waint to see OKC win the finals

  • MikeC.

I think JET has a point. Either the Thunder switch pick and rolls, leaving Dirk to shoot over a guard, or they stay at home and have JET and JJ turn the corner and get into the lane. It’s a tough call, but it will be easier if Ibaka’s knee is OK and he can rotate quickly.

  • robb

    good luck with that

  • unrel

“I’m trying to outperform their entire bench”… to me.. nothing there indicates that he’s bigger than he is.. sounds more like he’s sharing his intentions of playing well and leading the mavs bench to crush the thunder bench..

Harden’s Beard would like a word with you, Terry.

  • Heals

Gotta love the moxy, Jet’s always been a talker so the fact they swept LA has nothing to do with it. It’s more about the fact he dropped J’s all over they head…

  • T-Money

i mean.. he ain’t lying. jet is a much better player than harden.

  • JoeP

People seem to think the Mavs got here by accident, Lakers fans believe the Lakers gave it away, come on man please. The better team won, you see how the Lakers acted when they couldnt stop that lil JJ. I like OKC but sorry the Mavs are my team and will put them away. Too deep a bench, Jet, Kidd, Chandler, JJ, Haywood, Paja, Marion, oh yeah that big German Dirk. The time has come for the Mavs, like it or not. LETS GO MAVS!!!!

  • http://twitter.com/BeezKneezy LA Huey

Reppin’ that Seattle swagger. I see you, JET.

  • flipnoyce

I’m not really a fan of the JET or the MAVS, but what he did against the LAKERS pretty much says it all. I think he can pretty much say whatever the F*** he wants. They have already walked the walk using Kobe’s face and company to mop the LA floors! They are the only team in the playoffs to have a sweep. On the other note the THUNDERS CATS are a different type of beast, they are the REAL PREDATOR and as I predicted even before the season started I have them as the WESTERN champ. Ibaka will definitely give DIRK some serious problem because of his height and athleticism. Jet and Harden match up has yet to be seen. I think Harden is overall a better all around player over Jet.

  • SikhWitIt

Way to rep the 206 JT! Nothin but love from the upper left son!

  • SikhWitIt

I hope he does, I want to see the Zombie Sonics bite the dust this series

  • Bimmer

Jet is a better scorer than Harden sure, but overall player…? Maybe, but once Harden gets as old as Terry, we’ll see who is more accomplished :)

I like Terry, being a NWer myself, but Im pulling for the Bulls.. Would love to see DRose get a ring before Bron.

  • http://www.tampax.com doyouwantmore

Every year this guy shoots his mouth off because he can’t handle the pressure building up inside him. And every year the Mavs blow it right after he does.

  • Red Star

    JT! LMFAO!!

  • tom

    Jeeeeeeet!

  • dannyb

Everybody complains that the Mavs are too soft, that they don’t have any toughness. I say good for Jet for talking some smack. This team needs some attitude and The Jet is the most likely source.

  • http://www.slamonline.com unf*ckwitable

should be a dope series, not sure who i want to win, I like Durant a lot but i think Dirk deserves another shot at a ring.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

I have so much confidence in JT right now… His swagger is deep right here – Infact I’m supporting him so much right now he should go out and do an album – You hearing that Lou Williams?

I think terry will have a nice shooting on the series with thunders. i trust dallas will be the best in the west in 2011. and maybe get the last win on the champion.

  • DaddySwag

    Well… he did it.

  • http://www.fiba.com Darksaber

    Well then, hindsight and all.

  • Rachel

Jason Terry 24 points, OKC bench 22 points. Pretty funny!

  • puto

Jet 1 board 2 assists 0 steals 1 block, OKC 12 boards 7 assists 1 steal 5 blocks. Outscoring doesn’t necessarily mean outperforming. Props to Jet though. Great game.

    And boom goes the dynamite

  • Waylonakolipse

JT is probably the most underated scoring guard in basketball….Him, Monta, and Matthews.

  • JC

JET is underrated, IMO, partly because he went AWOL back in the Final against Miami. i hope he can redeem himself this year !!
