LeBron James Stopping Chalk Toss for Celtics Series?

LeBron didn’t do his customary pregame chalk toss prior to Game 1 against Boston, citing an even sharper focus going into this series as the reason for (temporarily?) halting the routine. The Miami Herald reports: “James’ fans are used to watching him toss chalk into the air before each game. It’s an iconic image James has used throughout the years after his Nike ‘Witness’ advertising campaign. James throws the chalk in the air … before every game … without fail. James didn’t toss his chalk into the air Sunday. Instead, he casually shook some on his hands and dusted the excess onto the ground. Ask why he broke from his normal pregame routine, James said he was focusing more on the series.”

Hahaha. This says so much about LeBron.
Firstly how he’s almost confessing he wasn’t 100% concentrated on playoff series before, or at least as concentrated as he could be (although what distraction does tossing chalk represent? playing up to the media/fans?)
And also how he thinks that stopping doing something as fart-sniffingly lame as throwing chalk and roasting himself in fans applause will do anything to alter his focus.
Regardless of the outcome of this series, LeBron still isn’t in the right place mentally to win it all yet.

  • Bluntz&40z

Agreed, and Garnett did it first anyways so I always thought it was kinda lame for him to do it withgarnett on the other team.Serge ibaka pulled out deke’s finger wag, but Mutombo wasn’t on he opposing team.

  • Bluntz&40z

@JdotD. Right on point man. I guess this also means he has a attenttion span of a 5 yr old

Actuall MJ did it 1st, then KG. But they didn’t turn turn it n2 the spectacle the way Lebron does. Or should I say, did.

  • Zabba

Yup, MJ used to do it as joke with one of the longtime Chicago broadcasters if I recall correctly.

Slam is off on this…I went to Game 3 of the previous series in Philly and he didn’t do the customary powder toss. Anyone notice if he did it in any of the other games that series??

  • Ali

“Focusing more on the series” Imagine that!

  • http://slamonline.com everything

lol @jdotd for that haternalysis on a pre game ritual! and who are you to say who is mentally ready to win it all?

  • Kas

I completey agree with jdotd, and would like to add that he’ll probably never be mentally ready.

  • JTaylor21

Looks like there’s a bunch of miss cleos running around.

  • the truth

@jdotD Expert on pre-game ritual analysis! lol what a joke

  • don

even if he does not do the chalk toss.. i’m still a fan. RIGHT on bron!

  • T-Money

so much hatred for someone that just plays basketball and doesn’t affect your daily lives. i will never understand fandom.

  • Sizzle

@T-Money typically the bashers are people who a) Hate him because he beat their team b) Hate him because they KNOW he is better than their favorite player c) Jealous of him or d) Are so insecure w/ their own lives that they resort to bashing somoene else’s or finally e) All of the Above. I love people who are critical of athletes, would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see what they did if they were that young w/ that much money and fame….

  • Kas

Or f) people who don’t mind the player but can’t stand LeBron fan boys who give their hero virtual fellatio every day or g) People of a certain moral standard who condemn LeBrons behaviour and fear for their kids’ future if this douche is their role model.

  • daveinboca

And this is “shocking” in what way, shape or form? How did you ever get your GED because it certainly doesn’t show in your writing and thinking ability.

  • Sizzle

@Kas there are a lot worse people you could choose for your kids to pick as role models. Something tells me you wouldn’t be upset if your kids maid millions of dollars a year as long as you got to floss it and ride around in the benzy?

  • Kas

No, it’s about values. And I was born with it. But that doesn’t mean I’m riding around in a flashy car and voting republican. But that’s for the future, for now i don’t like LeBron because I don’t like his game, basically. It’s not very smooth, feels like I’m watching a great robot ballplayer.

  • T-Money

kas re: g). you’re a moron and a low-lifer. i don’t usually go ad hominem attacks but you’re just an idiot.

  • Jer dawg

Come on, Lebron. Choke once more for old times sake. You and the Miami Big 3 do it once more. Remove your “King” moniker once you capture one of those elusive championship you covet so much. You can’t make it vs. Lakers. Kobe’s been wanting to play you for years and he’s probably going to lose to your teams in the Finals, but all this is speculative, isn’t it? Oh well, hope to see you “Gone Fishing” on TNT soon. Keep cranking out those Nike signatures, though. Your sneakers are still great performing equipment & I love them. But I like the weather out here in Southern California over Miami.

  • 6marjons

he shoulda stopped it when he left cleveland

  • ai come back

michael jordan had gambling problems, he cheated on his wife then they divorced just saying i mean i love mj but he was still frickin human

  • Triumvirate

From my perspective, it seems as if the powder ritual is just a way to rile up the home crowd. The triple-A spectators are pretty dead at times tbh.

  • barnabusb

Didn’t Reggie Miller do the chalk thing too?

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

He’s not doing it any more because he’s playing Kevin Garnett, the man from whom he stole the routine…

  • hagekg

yes yes keep continuing to hate….while the king continues to proove his game on court…

  • http://philosopher.view@blogspot.com The Philosopher

So, The King is an all timer without even concentraring.

  • http://philosopher.view@blogspot.com The Philosopher

  • Ronald

Yeah, KG did the chalk thing first. But you have to admit, LBJ and Nike made it his thing. Just like how Dr. J did the free throw line thing first, but MJ and Nike made it iconic.

  • http://slamonline.com Michael

Shout to Philo, once again on cue, and on the money

  • Kas

I don’t worry to much about the opinions of someone named “T-money”.. and btw i allready did g)..

  • http://slamonline.com taye

All these LBJ haters need to get a life like seriously! In no shape, form, or fashion has bron affected your lives. He made a decision that was best for him and his family. He wanted to go somewhere he could have a great chance to win a ring. As far as rituals go, every NBA player has copied another players ritual, the powder ritual has been going on for years so don’t go there, he just made it look better and made it even more famous. Shaq had the superman theme first and dwight howard stole it from Shaq so what now??? You can hate on LBJ all u want but bottom line is he’s one the best players in the league and he will win a ring in Miami, SO GET OVER THE DECISION and get on with ur lives! You all act like bron was dating you and he f**ked you and left! Life goes on, get over it!!!

  • Dee

Bow to the King! Miami Heat going ALL. THE. WAYYYYYYYYYYYYY!
