Memphis Grizzlies Owner: ‘We’re Not Trading Rudy Gay’

Despite the persistent rumors, Michael Heisley insists that Rudy Gay isn’t on the market, and he’s convinced that Memphis would be in the Western Conference Finals right now had the forward not gotten injured. The Commercial Appeal reports: “Mike Heisley was on the phone from Chicago. Something was plainly bothering him. ‘You could do me a favor,’ he said. For you, Mike? Anything. ‘Would you please make it clear that we’re not trading Rudy Gay?’ You’re not? But I keep hearing all these NBA types say that you might well trade him. ‘I know,’ said Heisley. ‘And, quite frankly, it (ticks) me off. I think it’s cruel to the guy. He died during this period. That’s how much he wanted to play. And to now have to hear that we’re trading him? There’s nothing more untrue than that.’ So, I should write that he’ll be back? ‘Let me tell you something,’ said Heisley. ‘No disrespect to Oklahoma City, but if we had had Rudy Gay, we would have won the bleepity-bleep series going away. I really believe that.’”

The moment he’s healthy he’s gone.

Yep. Just like Pat Riley to Michael Beasley: “We want to build around him. He’s going to have a long career in Miami with Wade!”

No, idiots there bringing back thier best player, that they just signed to an extension. The Griz were a nice surprise this year, but they still lost in the second round. ATL does that every year. You bring back your best player and try to get better, you dont wallow in mediocrity. They have point and 2 gaurds, and they have big men. They need a SF and Rudy is one of the best.

    @ Nick
Except Michael Beasley is a bum and Gay is a cold killer on the court. He gives them a quality iso player which is a rare commodity you don’t give up. Didn’t he have a couple buzzer beaters this year too?

    Yeah Miami & Toronto.

Whilst I’m sure no team would ever WANT to get rid of Rudy Gay, just take a look at what Memphis needs to do this off season:

    Re-sign Gasol
    Re-Sign Randolph
    Re-Sign Battier

Where are they going to clear cap room from? OJ Mayo is the only expendable player that has a significant wage… besides Gay.

They might not want to but it might make sense in the long term to trade Gay and sign a veteran SF like Prince on the cheap.

They dont “need” Battier they only picked him up because Rudy went down.

If they can re-sign Gasol while keeping Gay (knowing that he will change his role from team star to 2nd option after z bo)the griz will be murder next year. L

    Randolph allready got an extension.

  • Mike From Spain

reminds me to the situation in Portland with Lamarcus Aldridge and Brandon Roy

As Max already said Randolph already got an extension. They just need to resign Gasol and I’m not really sure they NEED Battier with Tony Allen and Sam Young on the bench.

  • bashmo

Battier proved HUGE off the bench, providing defense on players like Richard Jefferson and occasionally KD in the postseason, and hit BIG shots, like the game winner in game 1 vs SA. he’s a great guy to have on a squad. He’s a veteran that will play his role and understands the game, and is extremely coachable. Most teams would love to have SHane Battier..I think Memphis needs him

  • JL

they signed gay to a max contract. no way people will accept him in a trade. they overpaid for him, and now he is untradeable.

  • Harlem_World

There’s not need for Battier when Rudy is back. Rudy is an upgrade on Battier – although he’s a good guy to have on your squad. I’d take him at the Knicks in a heartbeat. If they can re-sign Gasol, Memphis are a force next year. Tony Allen and Sam Young are big parts to this team, but Gay, Z-Bo and Gasol can compete with any frontline in the league. Conley proved his worth this post season too.

If Gilbert Arenas got traded this year, nobody in untradeable. Gay won’t be traded beacuase Heisley sticks to his word. I wouldn’t be surprised if Mayo and Gasol are packaged for an upgrade in a sign and trade.

Trade him to the Wolves!!!!!! Gay-Love would be a great 1-2 punch.

  • dahon

    LOL gay-love .. thats quite a punch

  • jose

^^^ Agree. Then All they need is Ramon Sessions for the Gay-Love-Sessions Trifector

As good as he is, they have to let Shane walk. Without Rudy, they’ve maxed out their potential. I am interested to see where Battier lands this summer.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I wouldn’t be surprised if Battier ends up in Boston. I assume they will try and make a move or two, and Battier would be a cheap fill-in with great value that will understand the system, and be able to perform in high-pressure situations. I see battier on a “contender” one way or the other. Be it Boston, San Antonio, Orlando, wherever.

@nbk, I think Shane is still in paper-grab mode. He won’t play for peanuts. I think he’ll land for an up-and-coming squad for some mid-level bank.

Gay won’t be traded beacuase Heisley sticks to his word. I wouldn’t be surprised

Hmm that’s crazy I didn’t hear about the Randolph extension, what are the details?

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Short season with the lockout. New CBA. Barrier gonna sign a one or two year deal, at like 2-4 million with a 4-8 million dollar option for a year or two. He is 31 or 32 right? And the new CBA is going to change contracts and what we think of as “overpaid/underpaid/market-value” is going to completely change.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

    Battier*. Autospell is my nemesis

  • horsey

randolph extension: 4 years, $66 million plus another $5 million in incentives/bonuses.

  • Tyrant56

I don’t see why people claim that Z-bo is the star and rudy will have to differ, Randolph has been in the league for about 10 years so his time is ticking loudly, they have to begin to develop gasol (after the re-up) and establish mayo-gay-conley as their core. Yes this is coming from a memphian, and if u don’t like it then apperantly the truth hurts.
