NBA All-Defensive Teams Announced

The League named its best defenders, as determined by the coaches (and somehow, Kobe Bryant was named to the first team. Yikes.) The OC Register has the names: “Kobe Bryant was voted Monday to the NBA All-Defensive team for a record-tying ninth time in his [15]-year career by league coaches, the NBA announced. Bryant, who received 33 points, and Kevin Garnett, who also made the team, joined Michael Jordan and Gary Payton for the most honors in NBA history. FIRST TEAM: Dwight Howard, Rajon Rondo, Kevin Garnett, LeBron James, Kobe Bryant. SECOND TEAM: Tony Allen, Chris Paul, Tyson Chandler, Andre Iguodala, Joakim Noah.”

arent they missing another player for the first team?

    *catching breath*
Funniest joke of the year so far.

Lebron made the first team too

Are the coaches, dare I say, retarded? Smh. This was straight up legacy padding for that Jordan wannnabe, Grant Hill got snubbed, and LBJ is overrated as a defender. ((Sighs)) I could go on and on.

It’s disgusting that Kobe made it over D Wade.

  • Stan The Boy Taylor

Where’s Andrew Yogurt Bogut at? Leading the league in blocks should’ve got him on the second team.

  • Harlem_World

Kobe??? C’mon, that’s ridiculous. Tony Allen is a better defender than him. He’s not even the best perimeter defender on his team. Lebron is not a better defender than Iggy either. NBA has become less and less about ability and more about publicity. Don’t like the way it is heading at all.

kobe over TA? bs. TA now is a better defender than Kobe ever was, let’s not even talk about the current Kobe style of defense.

  • Zabba

There are people who didn’t make the second team who are better than Kobe. Grant Hill, Mr. Bogut…

  • Dirtybird

The coaches just watch sportscenter to base their votes on these guys.

  • Gman

    Wade got snubbed.

Hill, Allen, Bogut may all be better defenders right now, but none of them are guards. Among guards, Kobe got the second most votes for DPOY (behind Rondo) so this selection is appropriate. However it is interesting that a handful of forwards did get more DPOY votes than LBJ that either didnt make it or just made 2nd. Back to Kobe, in addition to tying MJ, The Glove and KG for most 1st team selection this also gives him 11 total selections which is the most ALL TIME among perimeter defenders. I think this solidifies him as among the all time greatest two way players.

  • Alex

Is it just me or would the second team be the way better defensive team.

  • ogog

the 2nd team r all wildcards but they’re solid players …better defenders than the 1st team easily imo!

  • lockon

1st team only have 4 players. i think slam missed someone

  • cramzy

wade got robbed. dude 6-4 blocking centers. he’ll got robbed out of first team all-nba too, bet on it

I think the coaches would know a little bit more than a bunch of random guys ranting on the web.

In fact, I would love the coaches to decide every award but the all-star selection. That’s a fans show.

  • J.C.

Kobe and KG are getting their lifetime-achievement awards, just like TD sat on these teams for a while. I’m happy with the 2nd team though, good to see guys like Tony Allen, Iggy and Chandler getting love.

  • Kas

As much as I like Kobe, I don’t think he deserves 1st team this year. And LeBron!?!? Wow. Coaches must be as stupid as sportswriters.

Co-Sign JC. I’m KG’s biggest fan and can’t understand how he makes the first team year after year. Maybe it’s something I’m not seeing, but guys like Dirk and Amare consistently torch him and his pick and roll defense can be pretty bad at times.

    popularity contest

1st lebron is a much better defender than iggy. Second kobe averaged 4.5 reb 1steal and a horrendous .2 blocks. That’s 1st overall D im guessing when guys like wade had 6.5 reb 1.5 steals and a block a game for the season and don’ even make it to second overall team

  • http://www.pablasso.com pablasso

Defense is not all about stats, Wade gets a lot of steals, but also leaves his man open a lot to get them.

If it were for stats, Kevin Love would be first team.

  • http://itsahardwoodlife.blogspot.com omphalos

How is Allen not a guard exactly?

  • angus

the defensive team looks more like an all nba team….kobe is a defensive player? this is new to me (even though i live in socal and can watch him on tv every night)

  • http://www.scout.com zoom

Sooo pablasso, you’re really going to defend Kobe being ahead of Tony Allen because the coaches say he’s a better defender? The rest of us are watching basketball in an alterate universe I guess. Lebron was a better defender than Grant Hill?

  • robb

Where the f*** is Grant Hill?

  • http://nba.com EJ

NBA is nothing but a popularity contest now. Kobe and Lebron shouldn’t be there, MVP goes to who’s most popular and same with the dunk contest. Even the Sprite dunk showdown was a popularity contest. Young Hollywood won cause he’s from LA.

  • robb

Kobe at this age couldnt even hold a f*ck cold..this is travisty!!!

  • Jono

Where is Grant Hill? Why is Tony Allen only in the 2nd time? When will people stop giving Kobe free passes to the Defensive 1st team? When when when will this stop? Kobe get it every year for doing nothing. NOTHING!

  • http://dsjkflf.com Jukai

This gets worse every year, it really does.

4 future arguments n defending KB8 as a gr8 defender, altho 4 a couple seasons he was arguably the best defender n the L, please refrain from using this yrs all defensive team selection as proof. This was flat out ridiculous. As gr8 as KB8 is, this was definitely undeserving

  • http://www.slamonline.com Zog

    mmmmmmm….. no josh smith wtf

  • http://www.slamonline.com Max

    Lol at Kobe.

  • http://theurbangriot.com The NUPE

It surprises me to see Kobe’s name on the list. He still plays some great defense when he wants to – generally near the end of a tight game. So maybe, because the coaches know he’s capable they give him the vote. If the question was for a single defensive posesion – who do you want on the floor, then I could see why/how they would put Kobe over TA. But, being based on performance all year long, then I don’t agree with them.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/online/nba/2011/05/nba-all-defensive-teams-announced/ BigQ

yeah i was waiting for someone to say “how is tony allen not a guard”!

  • http://www.slamonline.com/online/nba/2011/05/nba-all-defensive-teams-announced/ Poetic Justice

Maybe they have Iggy at the 3 spot.

  • Mike From Spain

Tony allen should be in the first team. I would say people like Serge Ibaka or Bogut did better than KG at the defensive end this year. I haven’t watched so many games and I am not a coach , so maybe I am missing something… but as much as I like Kobe, he does not deserve to be in the 1st defensive team. Teams with halfway decent guards have been torching the Lakers this post-season.

  • Bo Diddly

Definitely a fan friendly first team. Where’s Ibaka, Deng, Josh Smith, Joel Anthony, Battier, Gerald Wallace??
