The Los Angeles Lakers ‘Embarrassed’ Jerry West

The Logo spoke for all of Laker Nation following their humiliating sweep at the hands of the Dallas Mavericks. From the Dan Patrick Show (via SRI): “How surprised was he that the Lakers were swept?: ‘Obviously very surprised, but, again, I think people don’t realize that Dallas had the exact same record as the Lakers did this year. And they had a terrific road record, they were capable. It’s a completely different looking Dallas team than I’d seen before. When I watched the Lakers play they looked dispirited. Some of the things that I saw out there, really frankly, were pretty classless. The Lakers have won with class and they’ve lost with class and [Sunday], as someone who worked there and is pretty proud of my years with the Lakers, I was a little bit embarrassed — not with the loss, but some of the things I saw on the floor which I thought were really just not something that a person that wears a Laker uniform should do.’ How do the Lakers recover from this?: ‘I’m not there as the GM, but I think all year long I watched this team and it’s about Phil’s last stand, about almost everyone being assured they would be in the Finals. But there were just too many distractions. Phil’s a very powerful figure and has had an incredible career. I almost felt, at times, the focus was more on him than the team. … I felt, at times this year, that everyone just assumed that the Lakers were going to do it. I didn’t like this team from the start of the year. I didn’t think it was well-equipped to win another championship.’ What do the Lakers need to continue to compete for championships?: ‘First of all they need athletes. This is the least athletic Laker team as I’ve seen in a long time. … I think [Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum] have to be used differently. Putting Pau Gasol and having him guard Dirk Nowitzki, there was no way that was going to happen. There’s just no way.’”

He’s not the ‘logo’ for nothing. True words.

  • JTaylor21

Kobe Bryant embarrassed the true Closer.

  • Zabba

Lamar Odom or Ron Artest should’ve guarded Dirk. It’d be a different story then.

  • Gman

    Zabba…Exactly!

  • Riggs

@zabba: yeah they wouldve lost by 20

  • Jono

Get over yourself Jerry West, you’re a thing of the past.

jono, you’ve lost any basketball credibility you might have had, especially if you’re a laker fan.

  • robb

    He could average 30 today!

Jerry said he didn’t like the team from jump street. I can’t disagree with that. But it’s about more than them just needing athletes. The thing with them, as it also is with Boston, is that these guys, especially their main cogs, are getting long in the tooth. Kobe’s not old by everyday standards, but dude’s been playing at a high level (and deep into the playoffs almost every year) since he was 17. His (and Garnett’s) legs have a LOT of miles on them.

This makes for a shorter offseason and time for recovery. This LA team has been doing that for the past 3 seasons, and add to that Kobe playing in the Olympics in 2008. Nobody hates LA more than me, so don’t see this as being an apologist. Just stating facts.

The problem with the Lakers wasn’t personnel. On paper they’re the best team in the NBA. But as Mack says, Kobe’s getting older. Why is he still playing all those minutes in the regular season? He should be pacing himself for the playoffs, let D-Rose get the reg-season highlights. Odom and his reality show were a distraction. Jackson’s last go-around was a distraction. Ron Artest is always a distraction. The only position the Lakers need to improve on is PG, and they need to get Artest out of there.

The Logo, lol. He’s right. I don’t think any basketball fan thought Pau on Dirk was a good idea from the beginning.

Just so we are clear, this is the same Jerry West that is the king of losing championships?

  • http://www.double-technical.blogspot.com Zee!

Yo Jerry, we know you hate Phil, keep your petty grievances out of it and talk about the game. Why are you still worried about the media’s perception of the Lakers, and you? Arrogant piece of Sh**. Does MJ worry about the Bulls? Hell no! And he has more rings than West ever had. And arguably he is the most iconic sports figure of our time when it comes to basketball. Go get the early bird special at Denny’s old man.

    wow.
y’all know we’re talking about the same jerry west who played in the same era as Russell’s Celtics?
and why the f*ck would MJ worry about being a bull, none of them ever did any classless sh*t like the lakers did the other night, he ain’t got nothin to worry about.

  • http://bulls.com airs
