Can the Miami Heat Bounce Back?

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

What began so promisingly for the Miami Heat in these NBA Finals has turned into an absolute nightmare. After winning the series opener in convincing fashion, things haven’t exactly gone according to plan for America’s Most Hated Squad.

LeBron James hasn’t lived up to the hype (on both ends of the floor), Dwyane Wade — brilliant throughout the series — is dealing with a potentially worrisome injury, Erik Spoelstra has been outcoached by Rick Carlisle, and Dirk Nowitzki is threatening to run away with the Finals MVP.

But all hope is not lost, despite a 3-2 series lead for the Dallas Mavericks. After all, the Lakers were in this exact same situation last year in the Finals. And things turned out OK for them.

The Heat need two consecutive victories to survive and clinch a title, and they’ll have a couple of chances at home (potentially) to get it done.

Though clearly concerned by the predicament they currently find themselves in, Miami’s two superstars and its coach know they still have an opportunity to do something special.

From ESPN and the Sun-Sentinel:

James and Wade were supposed to shine together in these moments on their way to winning multiple championships. That talk is gone, with the Heat needing to win the last two games to keep this season from ending in disappointment. Now, the discussion is whether James can perform on the grandest of stages.

The Mavs have never stopped believing they were going to win this series, and the Heat have helped them along, so often giving them an out. Now, Dallas looks like the more confident team even as it will have to overcome the Heat’s last resort — home-court advantage in the final two games of the series. When Game 6 and then maybe Game 7 are close at the end, the Mavs will have no problem believing they can pull it off. They did in Games 2 and 4, and those achievements made Game 5 felt like a haymaker.

“We just got to push through it,” James said. “At this point we have no choice, honestly.”

It’s been an incredibly entertaining series up to this point. It’s now up to the Miami Heat to ensure that it somehow goes to even greater heights.

I heard JVG and Mark Jackson mention the other day that there has been talk of picking the MVP after the play-offs. That is a great idea. Looking back at every game that has been played so far, regular and post-season, know one has been better than Dirk.
I know I know, MVP is a regular season award, and if Dallas wins Dirk likely gets finals MVP, but regular season MVP awards seem to hold more value when discussing careers/legacies.

I actually think that the genesis was in Dallas way before GSW. I think the Finals appearance allowed him to shake some of that off initially since he went through Nash and Duncan to get there.
I think that in that Finals it felt like he got abandoned by his team and had a bad shooting series. I didn’t think he was soft until the GSW series when he let midgets guard him.
And I agree on the triple double. That wasn’t anywhere near his potential, but I think it was a byproduct of his poor shooting not a failure to play hard or be focused. That was more the case in Game Four to me.

Like I said during the season, Dallas actually had the highest win % in the league with Dirk in the lineup, especially before Caron got hurt, infact If Caron Butler didn’t get hurt he would have won MVP, IMO.

This series may go down as one of the Greatest Finals series of All Times.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

I said on here several times that this Dallas team is different to years past, and that Tyson Chandler made them a championship level team. I just didn’t think they could stay that when Caron went down.

  • flipnoyce

There’s just no way the HEAT is winning two in a row at home the way DALLAS is playing. The MAVS smells blood in the air and they will go for a kill. Like, I’ve been saying the only way MIAMI was going to win is to have a large margin and if the officials rewards them the CHARITY line. I guess they won’t be having dessert with a cherry on top. Still game 7, MAVS!!!!

  • http://slamonline.com 1982

@BlackPhantom Try Yardbarker.com, it should be in their top stories.

  • O

I didn’t think I could lose anymore respect for Wade and James, but after seeing them mock Dirk’s fever before game 5 – RESPECT LOST!!! I mean honestly, how old are they again?!?! Are they really men? Maybe they should start playing in the WNBA with that “mean girls” spirit they walk around with. On second thought, the women of the WNBA are actually mature. These fools make it SO hard to respect them as actual peeps. That said, these jackasses will win the NBA title. I’m sure LeBroad is purposely holding back so that they can win the title in Miami. Doesn’t make him anymore of a man.

Im a die hard Lakers fan and i respect Dallas for sweeping such a good team. But i wanna see Dirk and especially Kidd get their 1st rings. Its been a long time comin for Kidd. But i cant stand Lebron, Wade is aight. But boy i would love to see them go down. Cant wait to see what that Kobe hatin, Lebron and miami di*k rider Bruce Blitz will say when they go down. He sh*tted on my man Kobe and tha Lakers when they got swept

    BYE BYE Heat.

  • madterps

If Dwade is hurting like he was in game 5, then no they will not bounce back. I’m hoping that Mavs will close out game 6 in Miami and that’ll be that for LeBronze.

Philosopher is a fraud. airs is my only real friend on here. Illuminati ish damn.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I like how LeBron went from the best player in the NBA to a non-factor compared to Dwyane Wade, in under 2 weeks.

  • http://fivemag.de Speedy

Hating is a big problem in sports but especially here at slam.
I read the posts after the 2006 Finals and Dirk got busted by nearly everyone. I can only remember 4 or 5 guys that defended him.
The list of guys who said that Dirk was the softest player of them all after getting his team to the finals ( a big accomplishment itself in my opinion ) included names like Khalid Salaam or WhithotEboy.
I don’t want to say that this justifies what is happening to LeBron right now because it doesn’t but it shows a general attitude of blasting guys that come short and it is a general problem in basketball and especially this site.
Maybe all of us should think a second before we post and then talk about basketball. These guys are all human and they have already accomplished so much by advancing to college, the league, the playoffs and finals and then all of a sudden when they have one, two, three bad games they are loosers?????????????????????????????????
I know that most guys here will not self reflect and go on with their usual posting and most of them will not even read this comment because I’m posting to late.
I just wanted to share this thought.
Nice team basketball by the mavs , by the way.

mike aka unf*ckwitable, and everyone else, how often do y’all even talk to Eboy in the first place to be talkin so much ish. His teams in the finals, your team is doing what your doing. save the crap for something that atleast has merit.

  • http://slamonline.com 1982

Why is everyone acting like this series is over? 2 games. Can Dallas finish Sunday? I’m excited to see who steps up… Trash talking before the Finals are over is like celebrating a championship before the season starts.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Did you half-wits really think I’d disapear to duck this loserish crowd? Man, GTFOH. Scare me when the Heat aint got any more games to play. And lets be clear….there’s some lying-a$s motherfuc&ers talking out of both sides of their
mouth today. Only person who should be gloating is Darksaber. Otherwise, tbe rest of you and your teams are as relevant as the last sh$t I took. See you pu$sies Monday as you quake with the prospect of the Mavs blowing your chances of doing what no other team could do. Cut the head off the Devil….cause right now….that shi&’s still on his shoulders.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

There is the Eboy we know and love.

  • ClydeSays

That was a great back and forth game until the Mavs finally took control late. Still lots of basketball to be played.

I doubt LBJ’s legacy will be cemented by this series, unless he comes out and drops two consecutive 50pt games on the Mavs. No matter how these Finals turn out, LBJ will probably be back. They can talk about ‘legacy-defining games’ of his career when he’s 35, not 26.

2 more wins and Miami earned the title. 1 more win Dirk and Jason Kidd makes Miami’s big 3 bow down and kiss their rings. Godfather style.

Co sign Speedy, LeBron is getting epic hate whenever his play is less than great, or poor. On this site and from a slew of talking heads thruought TV land, and its reached a boilling point for fans alike in these finals. Growing up an NBA fan in the 80′s like many, i was a captured by the Bird / Magic. Lakers / Celtics rivalry. Then came JORDAN.
Even though i was already obsessed with MJ in the late 80′s i still considered Magic to be a heavy in the convo of goat with Wilt/Russell/Bird/Kareem/Big-O. Then the Bulls beat the Lakers, and later Magic announced he had HIV…The dissrespect and lack of respect That Magic and his fans had to bear from that point on? it might not have been on message boards or sportscenter but it was prevelant. After the bulls 1st 3peat, if you even insinuated that Magic was in the convo of goat around MOST casual nba fans, you would have faced instant ridicule namecalling like “tragic” or worse this was common. Before that, for the most part the only big hate came from opposing fans. Bulls fans hated Pistons PLAYERS. Lakers fans Boston PLAYERS and so forth. Imo opinion one of the many ways MJ changed the game was how fans follow the game. Before him it was mostly by team. Sure you have favorite players, but you pick a team. Ater him everyone was looking for that next guy to follow, or hate. Now fans watch and root mostly for or against specific players. The first post MJ example we saw of this was Kobe. and we can see how that turned out. He was hated to a level never before seen for an NBA player of his stature. MJ fans, especially did so, next joined the talking heads and journalists to where it became clear that to be in professional sports coverage you no longer had to be unbiased. Even Slam was guilty of this. We see where its at today…and that is one of the ways Kobe changed the game, how fans and journalists follow and report on players. Hate em’ or love em’ based primarily on how you feel about the “guy”. Game and chips, have all become relative. To add to this with the expansion of TV coverage the media down to the internet in your pocket, social networks and gossip sites that track a players every word and action, people FEEL like they know the person. And most are manipulated by innacurate and biased reporting on the regular. LeBron fans who are NOW suprised at “the hate” are mostly unknowingly being naive. By now we have all become hypocrites and at one point or another bought into the new way of following the game.

  • alphabetaherculis

It’s going to Game 7……LBJ is back home and getting his affairs in order and get some home cooking. He’ll be back on Sunday with fire. I just wanna see Mavs face when they know there are gonna get ’06ed again.

Remember LAL were down 2-3 vs Celtics too……what happened? LAL won

  • http://www.bulls.com Unf★ckwitable

    Ah, I musta missed that.
Hmmm…feel like taking that name back….lol

  • Jackie Moon

Lebron fans now know what it was like to be a Kobe fan for the past 10 years.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Angel of Stern

Before Dwade came back in the third quarter we were starting to see the cavs Bron. He was dictating the entire offense and I thought it was working so well that I think they could have actually won the game if Dwade just rested up. Im not making excuses for Bron though or saying that Dwade shouldn’t have came back, cause he played a great game, I just feel like Bron was more confident when he was out there by himself.

  • http://fkjslf.com Jukai

You know, there’s this big argument going on and it seems to center around the different treatment between Lebron and Kobe, but you know what?
Now they’re being treated the same. Yep.
I’ve always felt bad for Kobe, because if he takes the shots and loses, he’s a ball hog, but if he doesn’t take the shots and loses, he failed his team. It’s an upsetting double standard for an amazing player. I remember what Kap is talking about: Kobe dropped 40+ on 50%+ plus and people were angry he wasn’t passing. That was BS and I stood up for Kobe, and I did what people were NOT doing: blamed Gasol and Bynum for being too passive. It’s just odd, because I swear the same people were saying Kobe was the best of the best and he was super near Jordan when he won the championship last year.
But Lebron is sort of getting that treatment too. He rides the hot hand in Wade, knows his shot is off, and tries to play great defense, rebound, and pass, and people say he chokes. He IGNORES the hot hands and chucks shots and isn’t able to make them, and people say he chokes. Yet, when he was winning in Chicago, people said he could be better than Jordan.
To end this debate: Some people see Kobe getting bum treatment and hate Lebron for it. Some people see Lebron getting bum treatment and hate Lebron for it. Not a good sign.
Personally, I think Lebron needs a post game more than I really thought… when his shots off, the Mavericks can play this pseudo-double from two sides force him down the middle defense which REALLY bothers Lebron, cause he’s just not comfortable with splitting and he can’t turn on a dime like Wade can. He’s getting some crappy charge calls and it really has taken a bit of his mental toughness out. He’s not choking, but he’d simply prefer to take over the game with defense and passing, and people don’t see that stuff.
I still predict a game 7 win for Miami, and I expect to see Wade as the finals MVP because Lebron doesn’t have the game to get Finals MVP against the Mavs (unless he triple doubles for the rest of the series)…. but I also predict that Lebron will get a boatload of “THIS IS WADE’S TEAM!” and “Wow best player in the world and he’s the worst player on the court!” until next years finals, where he’s better than Jordan again.
    It’s lame.

  • http://fkjslf.com Jukai

I also rarely ever change my opinions. I still think Spoelstra is a TERRIBLE coach and everytime Carlisle makes a smart rotation, Spo just sits there and does nothing to counter it. A game of chess this is not.
And Joel Anthony is still outrageously awful and worse than Big Z/Dampier but because he gets ESPN highlight blocks and Van Gundy/Jon Barry likes him, everyone has forgotten about their hatred for him too.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Not sure how I feel about the new commenting format, SLAM. I used to really like the narrow, centered comments as opposed to this really wide and big-fonted text. Still good, though.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Angel of Stern

I want the old Bron back… the one that used to joke around all the time, throw chaulk pregame, and acutally smile on the court.. also, does anyone thing it would be beneficial for Lebron to lose 10-15 pounds? it seems like the extra weight is slowing him down and stealing a bit of his vertical. He cant really post up so what is all that size really good for? He already gets lame foul calls because people just bounce off of him. I know one of the things that makes him Lebron James is his enourmous size but it seems like it was easier for him to score when he was a bit lighter and quicker.

  • i ball

i used to have respect for wade. not any more though.
lebron and wade are punks. chris bosh too. know what im saying? lol
dirk doesnt play their bull sh!t. fake sh!t in this league is left to them both.

how much do lebron and wade weight? yet they get as much as touched and they go flying. i dont like most of jeffvg opinions but he’s right they should fine players like wade and james for their actions. i wouldnt be able to stand myself if i won cheating. wheres the pride in that.

  • i ball

and i know more players do it too but lebron and wade take it to another level. thats lame man. wheres the pride or glory in that? smh. i used to like wade. damn. what a disappointment.

i guess thats why they get along so much.
three punks got together in the off season. they feel comfortable with each other.

jet’s burning james out on defense so he has no more gas for offense.

@Jukai, you’re right, its a bad sign. Personally i think its beyond a sign now, but the reality of how the common casual fan of of the L’ follows the game. finding someone with an unbiased view of LeBron good or bad is like finding someone with an unbiased view of Sarah Palin. Same goes for Kobe. though He famously accepted it a long time ago and used it to fuel his competetive drive. After his defiant return to Cleveland i thought LBJ had too? Im not so sure he is right now at this critical juncture. Howeva’, Its commical to me that anyone would suggest that a tripple double somehow could be translated into choking. Game 4? sure. But tripple dub? That kind of comment is exposing the real heads from the rookies on this site. For a guy that has been deemed a superior player and talent to DWade, for me, LeBrons deferance to Wade at this point only proves that he is committed to playing team ball to win. Its kinda hard to blame him, he’s never had teammates like Wade, or Bosh, or even guys like Haslem that have played their role on a championship team. With LeBron, fans have seen something new, a guy that can do everything, and has often completely dominated a game in away no player has before. A SF that has the game of a 2G THAT ISNT SOFT plays great D and is in the convo as the games best play maker and passer. Game 5 was actually an example of this. BUT, in the nba finals superstars have the burden of leading in the scoring dept and taking over in crunch time. LeBron needs the rock in his hands more often than any heat player including Wade. DWade can create his own shot and work in the post better than Bron. This needs to be initiated by Spo. If its not so what! Bron needs to be the same guy he was in Cleveland and assume the rsponsibilty of leading and closing out games. Unlike Bron wade has a dominant scorers mentality, hell be ready to score when its his time. Bron needs to be Paul Pierce to Wades Ray Allen. Then they will both get thiers, its clear after 5 games that thats what needs to change.
